"If I speak from my own experience, whenever we used to go for Qurbani or visit a butcher's shop, we would always witness the animal being slaughtered right in front of us. But now, I honestly don’t know whether the way things are done these days is truly halal or not.

Bookshops Inspected in Zainapora After Ban on 25 Secessionist Titles

Meer Irfan

Zainapora, Aug 7, KNT: Following the Jammu and Kashmir government’s ban on 25 books allegedly promoting secessionist ideology, police officials in Zainapora area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district carried out inspections at local bookshops to ensure compliance with the order.

Official sources said that a team led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) and the Station House Officer (SHO) Zainapora visited several bookshops in the town on Thursday. The officials checked shelves and inventories to verify that none of the banned titles were being kept for sale.

The banned books, declared forfeited under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, reportedly include titles by authors such as Arundhati Roy, A.G. Noorani, Sumantra Bose, and others, which the government said contain material that “excites secessionism and endangers the sovereignty of India.”

During the inspection, no banned material was found, and the shopkeepers were reportedly cautioned against stocking or distributing any of the proscribed books. The action comes amid a broader move by the administration to curb literature deemed to pose a threat to public order and national integrity. [KNT]

Akhal Encounter Enters Day 7: 3 more Soldiers Injuries in Overnight Gunfire

Operation Continues with Tight Corden In-Place; Intermittent firing reported during night as forces comb dense forest area

Nadeem Nadu

Kulgam, Aug 7 (KNC): The anti-terror operation in the Akhal area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district entered its seventh day on Thursday, with security forces intensifying their efforts to neutralize terrorists believed to be hiding in the dense forest terrain.

Official sources informed Kashmir News Corner (KNC) that intermittent firing between the terrorists and security forces was reported throughout the night, resulting in injuries to three more army personnel.

The injured soldiers were shifted to a military hospital for treatment.

The gunfire resumed late Tuesday night and continued into Wednesday morning as forces narrowed down their cordon in the forested region.

"With brief lull from Wednesday morning firing reaumed from the both sides with the hiding terrorist late last night. During the exchange of fire, three jawans sustained injuries," an official source said, adding that the search operation is ongoing with reinforcements deployed in the area.

The joint operation is being carried out by the Indian Army’s, J&K Police, and CRPF. Drones and sniffer dogs have also been pressed into service to trace the terrorist, who is believed to be cornered in a rugged forest patch.

The encounter had initially started on Thursday last week after specific inputs about terrorist presence in the area. However, the terrain and thick vegetation have posed major challenges to the forces.

“Security forces are exercising extreme caution to avoid collateral damage and ensure the safety of civilians residing in nearby areas,” sources added.

This is one of the longest ongoing anti-terror operations in the Valley this year, underscoring the presence of terrorists in the south Kashmir belt with intensified counter-insurgency efforts. (KNC)
