District Shopian Kicks Off Dharti Aaba Janbhagidari Abhiyan with Team Formation and Orientation Programme

Shopian, June 6, 2025 — As part of the nationwide Dharti Aaba Janbhagidari Abhiyan under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, the District Administration Shopian initiated the team formation process for the upcoming Awareness and Benefit Saturation Camps scheduled from June 15 to June 30, 2025.

A district-level orientation programme was convened today under the chairmanship of Dr. Nasir Ahmad Lone (JKAS), Additional District Development Commissioner, Shopian. The programme aimed to sensitise the teams constituted at District, Block and GP/Village levels about the objectives and Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs) of the campaign.

During the session, field teams were briefed on conducting baseline surveys to identify critical gaps in service delivery and promote evidence-based planning. Emphasis was placed on achieving saturation of key welfare schemes including Aadhaar enrolment, Ayushman Bharat, PM-KISAN, and PMAY-G for tribal communities.

Among others, the Assistant Commissioner Development (ACD) Shopian, Sh. Manzoor Ahmad Mir, and Block Development Officer Keller, Shakil Bhat, were present and actively participated in the orientation proceedings.

SHOPIAN POLICE ARRESTED DRUG PEDDLER; CONTRABAND RECOVERED

Shopian, June 4, 2025

In a major step towards curbing drug menace in the district, Shopian Police apprehended one drug peddler and recovered contraband substances from his possession in the jurisdiction of Police Post Keegam.

A police team from Police Post Keegam, established a checkpoint at Marhang crossing, during the naka checking one individuals exhibiting suspicious behavior attempted to flee on spotting the police. However, he were swiftly apprehended.

Upon search, Charas sticks like substance (60 Grams) were recovered from his possession. The arrested individual discoles his identity as Gulzar Ahmad Thoker Son of Gh Ahmad Thoker resident of Tumlihaal Pulwama.

A case under FIR No. 125/2025 under relevant Sections of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Shopian. Further investigation is underway to unearth the forward and backward linkages of the arrested individual. The operation was meticulously executed by IC PP Keegam Inspr Shahbaz Bashir under the supervision of DySP Hqrs Shopian Shri Imtiyaz Ahmad-JKPS and
the whole process was carried out under the overall supervision of SSP Shopian Shri Anayat Ali Chowdhary-IPS.

A Scene Not Witnessed in 80 Years Our Hard Work Was Washed Away

In Handew, Shopian, two local farmers — Abdul Hamid Wani and Abdul Hamid Bhat — said this was the first time in 80 years that such a destructive hailstorm had struck the village. Their crops were fully ready for harvest, but the sudden storm wiped out everything. “We have never seen anything like this in our lifetime,” said one of them. “Our months of hard work were destroyed in just a few minutes.
