Massive Protests Erupt in Hermain Against NC Government's Alleged Failures and Bias

Hermain, Shopian | July 15, 2025:
A wave of public anger swept through the Hermain area of Shopian as hundreds of residents staged a protest against what they described as the National Conference (NC) government’s continued neglect and discriminatory policies. The protestors accused the sitting MLA of Zainapora, Mr. Showkat Ganie, of sabotaging key developmental initiatives in Hermain to benefit his native village, Chitragam.

Residents raised serious allegations that the feasibility for establishing a ZEO (Zonal Education Office) in Hermain was deliberately obstructed by Mr. Ganie, who allegedly pressured the then Principal of Higher Secondary School Hermain—now Dy. CEO Mr. Aijaz Ahmad—not to approve the location. The denial of this long-pending demand has sparked widespread resentment among the local population.

Moreover, protestors accused the MLA of intentionally stalling the upgradation of PHC (Primary Health Centre) Hermain, a vital healthcare facility for the area. “At every step, development meant for Hermain is being diverted to Chitragam. Our PHC remains neglected, our roads unfinished, and our voices unheard,” shouted one of the protestors.

Adding to the outrage, locals alleged that the macadamisation project originally sanctioned for Hermain was "stolen" and redirected to Chitragam MLAs native village. “This is nothing less than theft. The funds and work that belong to Hermain have been hijacked for political gain,” said another angry resident.

The protestors warned of intensifying their agitation if the administration fails to take corrective measures. They demanded an impartial probe into the ZEO feasibility denial and the reallocation of developmental works. Civil society members and local youth organizations have pledged to continue their protests until justice is served.

Massive Protest Erupts in Zainapora Against NC Government Neglect

Zainapora, 14 July 2025 – Thousands of residents from Zainapora and adjoining areas staged a massive protest today, expressing strong resentment against the government’s continued apathy and discriminatory decisions affecting the Sub Division.

The protest saw participation from members of civil society, youth, local leaders, and common citizens, who marched peacefully while raising slogans demanding justice and immediate redressal of their long-pending issues.

The key demands raised by the protesters included:

Immediate halt to the shifting of the Receiving Station sanctioned for Aglar Zainapora. The project, already funded with ₹35 lakhs, must not be relocated.

Return of doctors and paramedical staff who were arbitrarily shifted from Sub District Hospital Zainapora, and appointment of a capable administrator to improve healthcare services.

Restoration of the macadamization quota for Zainapora, which has been unjustly canceled or diverted.

End to administrative discrimination, with a demand to shift or create the office of Dy CEO in Zainapora to cater to the growing needs of the Sub Division.

Residents highlighted that Zainapora, despite being a designated Sub Division with an SDM already posted, continues to face step-motherly treatment. They warned that if corrective measures are not taken immediately, the protests will intensify in the coming days.

The protest remained peaceful but firm, sending a clear message to the administration: Zainapora will not tolerate injustice any longer.

Civil Society Zainapora Calls for Shutdown Against Shifting of Receiving Station and Doctors

Zainapora, July 12:
In a strong show of resentment, the civil society of Zainapora has called for a shutdown on 14 July from 10 AM to 12 Noon to protest against two key issues that have triggered public outrage in the area.

The first grievance pertains to the shifting of the Aglar-Zainapora Receiving Station, whose location was at Babapora. The government had already released ₹90 lakh for the project. However, recent developments suggest the receiving station is being relocated, leading to widespread anger among locals who see this move as unjustified and politically motivated.

The second issue concerns the shifting of doctors from Sub District Hospital (SDH) Zainapora, which residents believe will severely affect the quality and availability of healthcare services in the area.

As part of the protest, all shops and business establishments will remain closed during the shutdown period. The civil society has appealed to the public for peaceful participation and urged the administration to address the genuine concerns of the Zainapora area residents without further delay.

Local leaders have also expressed disappointment over the decisions and warned that continued disregard for public sentiment may force the community to intensify their agitation in the coming days.

The recent spell of heavy rainfall has led to a sudden and alarming rise in water levels across the region. This abrupt increase, coupled with years of unchecked encroachment on natural water bodies, rivulets, and streams, has created a serious challenge for the district administration. What were once free-flowing natural channels are now choked or blocked, leading to increased flooding and waterlogging in many areas. It's a wake-up call for all of us to respect nature's boundaries and support efforts to restore and protect our natural water systems. The time to act is now—before the damage becomes irreversible.
