Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for major development projects worth ₹23,550 crore in Silchar, marking a significant push for infrastructure and economic growth in the Barak Valley.

During the event at Ambikapur, the Prime Minister performed the Bhumi Pujan (ground-breaking ceremony) for three key projects: the Silchar High-Speed Corridor, the Silchar Town Flyover, and the Patharkandi Agricultural College. The 166-km Silchar–Shillong High-Speed Corridor, estimated at around ₹22,860 crore, will become the first access-controlled high-speed expressway in Northeast India, significantly improving connectivity between Guwahati and Silchar and reducing travel time from 8.5 hours to about 5 hours.

PM Modi also highlighted the NH-306 elevated corridor project, aimed at easing congestion on one of Silchar’s busiest roads while strengthening connectivity with neighbouring states like Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur. Additionally, the foundation stone for a new College of Agriculture in Patharkandi, Karimganj district was laid to enhance agricultural education and research opportunities in the region.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said the Barak Valley is emerging as a strategic gateway connecting India with Southeast Asia under the Act East Policy, while also accusing the Indian National Congress of neglecting the region for decades. He emphasised that the development initiatives will boost trade, infrastructure, and economic growth across Northeast India.
