The evening session of the Plenary Session of the Executive Committee of the Asam Sahitya Sabha in Silchar witnessed a different side of Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta. Mahatta happens to be a poet and writer publishing multiple books and writing for several literary publications.

APS Numal Mahatta is also the inaugurator for the first day of the session.

Mahatta talked about how the Asam Sahitya Sabha is a melting pot for people across the state and how culture unifies people across the globe.

"The Borail Ranges stand between the two valleys like a wall. But that is just a geographic boundary between the Barak and the Brahmaputra; that wall doesn't divide us in any way. People have time and again proved that no wall can divide people, be it the Berlin Wall dividing East and West Germany, which fell, uniting Germans. Similarly, Asam Sahitya Sabha is trying to unite both the valleys even after we have a geographical barrier that sometimes makes the commute difficult, but doesn't separate our people", said SSP Mahatta.

Renaming of Silchar Railway Station:

The Sabha reaffirmed the long-standing demand of the people of Silchar and Barak to rename Silchar Railway Station as Bhasha Shahid Railway Station, noting that both the Assam and Central governments had expressed no objection in 2024.

However, since the government has yet to act on the renaming demand, Asam Sahitya Sabha President Basanta Kumar Goswami said the Sabha will now take the initiative to push the state government to implement it. The president also said, “It reflects the mother tongue of all—Bengali, Manipuri, Odia, Assamese, Bodo, Hmar, and others.”
