Gurucharan University, which was earlier known as Gurucharan College, has taken a big step forward by introducing its first Ph.D. programme for the 2026–27 academic session after becoming a university. This is the first time the institution will offer doctoral studies, marking a new phase in its growth.

The application process will go live online from March 20, 2026, on the university’s official website. Selection of candidates will be done through an entrance exam followed by an interview, as per UGC norms.

Students are advised to go through the official notification in the next slide for full details on eligibility, available departments, and the admission process.

Today, an important step has been taken to reduce the distance between the Barak Valley and the Brahmaputra Valley. Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Guwahati–Silchar High-Speed Corridor, a project worth ₹22,864 crore. This major project will reduce the travel time between Guwahati and Silchar to around 5 hours and will help increase trade, tourism, and overall development in the state.

Along with this, he also laid the foundation stone for the long-awaited flyover in Silchar city. This project will help reduce traffic congestion on the main road of the Barak Valley and make daily travel easier for the people.

The foundation stone for a new agricultural college in Patharkandi was also laid. This will create new opportunities for agricultural education and development in the region.

For many years, the people of the Barak Valley have been demanding better transport facilities. Our government has worked to make this dream come true through development, not protests—by converting railway lines to broad gauge, speeding up the East–West Corridor project, building new medical colleges, and improving the education and security sectors.

Today’s important step once again shows that development is our main goal, and we are committed to ensuring equal progress for every part of Assam.

The Mini Secretariat at Srikona will be inaugurated today (March 14) at 12 noon by Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, after the public programme of Narendra Modi in Silchar.
The Mini Secretariat has been built to accommodate several state government departments serving the Barak Valley, with the aim of improving administrative coordination and reducing the need for people from Cachar district, Karimganj district, and Hailakandi district to travel to Guwahati for official work.
The project was initially proposed during the tenure of former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. It had an estimated cost of ₹135 crore, out of which ₹116 crore was sanctioned for construction.
The Bhoomi Pujan ceremony for the project was held on August 20, 2019, by Assam minister Parimal Suklabaidya and Rajdeep Roy, Member of Parliament from Silchar, in the presence of former minister Gautam Roy.
With its inauguration today, the Mini Secretariat is expected to strengthen the administrative infrastructure of Barak Valley.

The Cachar district administration on Thursday stated that there is no shortage of domestic LPG cylinders in the district and confirmed that supply and distribution are functioning normally.

In an official press statement, the administration mentioned that all LPG agencies currently have sufficient stock. Residents have been requested not to believe rumours or crowd gas agencies unnecessarily. People were also advised to depend only on official information and cooperate in maintaining normal conditions.
