Amri Karbi and Indigenous Groups Voice Strong Protest Against High-Voltage Power Line Construction in Sonapur
Tensions mounted in the Sonapur region as members of the Amri Karbi community, along with local indigenous organizations, staged a protest against the construction of high-voltage power towers and transmission lines in the area.
Demonstrators expressed severe concern over the project, alleging that laying high-voltage power lines through populated residential zones and agricultural lands poses significant safety hazards and risks to the livelihoods of local residents. Holding placards and shouting slogans, protesters demanded an immediate halt to the construction work.
Security forces deployed to the site attempted to manage the situation, resulting in brief scuffles and altercations between police personnel and the agitating crowd. Local bodies have urged the administration and government authorities to reconsider the alignment of the project and relocate the transmission lines to non-residential areas.
