, January 7: Former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Kabindra Purkayastha passed away at Silchar Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday. He was 94.

Purkayastha was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Silchar in 1991 and was re-elected in 1998, during which he served as Minister of State for Telecommunications under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He returned to Parliament in 2009, defeating senior leaders including Santosh Mohan Dev and Badruddin Ajmal.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep grief over the demise of the veteran leader, remembering his long and dedicated service to the people.

2016-batch IAS officer, Aayush Garg has been appointed as the new District Commissioner of Cachar succeeding Mridul Yadav who assumed charges on September 2024. Currently Aayush Garg serves as the District Commissioner of Sivasagar District in Assam.

Mridul Yadav will now be transferred and posted as the DC of Sivasagar. The ordered were notified by the Department of Personnel, Assam on December 24, 2025.
