Sadar PS Rescues Mentally Unstable Bhutanese National; Reunites Him with Family After Six Months

On 08th July, PI Niraj Khatiwada, SHO Sadar Police Station, received a telephonic report regarding an elderly person found living in a destitute condition near Denzong Fatak. Responding swiftly, the team from Sadar PS rescued the individual and admitted him to Freedom Rehabilitation Centre for medical care and shelter.

Upon further inquiry, the person was identified as Sonam Topgay, 49 years old, a resident of Zhamgang District, Bhutan. It was revealed that he was mentally unstable and had arrived in Sikkim around six months ago to offer prayers at Chorten Monastery, Deorali, but had lost his way and failed to return home.

Today, with the assistance and coordination of Duars Expressmail NGO, Mr. Sonam Topgay is being safely repatriated to Bhutan and will be reunited with his family after a prolonged separation.

Gangtok District police extends sincere appreciation to Freedom Rehabilitation Centre for their compassionate care and support during Mr. Topgay’s stay, and to Duars Expressmail NGO for their pivotal role in facilitating his safe return home.

CM Prem Singh Tamang Pays Tribute to Late Literary Icon Sanu Lama

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay paid heartfelt tribute to renowned Nepali literary figure Padma Shri Late Gadul Singh Lama, popularly known as Sanu Lama, at his residence today. The CM expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and remembered Lama as "one of the most illustrious figures in Nepali literature, a gifted lyricist, and a true patriot."

In a message shared via his official page, the Chief Minister described the loss as irreparable not only for Sikkim but also for the entire literary world. “We offer our sincere prayers to the Almighty for eternal peace for the departed soul,” he added.

Sanu Lama, a celebrated writer and lyricist, leaves behind a legacy that has deeply enriched Nepali literature and culture.

Sikkim Mountaineer Ashal Rai Loses Life in Ladakh Expedition

Ashal Rai, a mountaineer and instructor at the Indian Himalayan Centre for Adventure and Eco Tourism (IHCAE) in Namchi, Sikkim, tragically passed away on July 15 while climbing the Nun Kun peak in Ladakh. Rai was part of a 15-member team undertaking the challenging expedition, which included two other mountaineers from Sikkim.
According to sources, Rai lost his life during the ascent. Authorities from IHCAE have confirmed the news, and efforts are currently underway to bring his body back to Sikkim.

Nun Kun, located in Ladakh, is a formidable peak that poses significant climbing challenges due to its high altitude and steep terrain.

State Funeral Announced On Last Rites Of Padma Shri Awardee Sanu Lama

The Government of Sikkim has announced with deep sorrow the passing away of Padma Shri awardee Shri Gadul Singh Lama, also known as Sanu Lama. He died on Saturday, 12th July 2025, in Siliguri.

According to an official circular, the state government has declared that the last rites of the late Sanu Lama will be held on Friday, 18th July 2025, with full state honours.

The government has also permitted employees of the state government and its public sector undertakings to pay their last respects to the departed soul on the day of the funeral. However, employees will need to take prior permission from the heads of their departments or offices.
