*Press Release*
*20th of Aug, 2025*

Today, I met with the Hon'ble Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari ji, to update him about the prevalent situation in National Highway - 10 (NH10), and submitted my detailed field visit report.

I informed him that the Teesta river has changed course since the 2023 floods, causing severe erosion along the right bank where NH-10 lies. The river level has risen sharply, making desilting urgent. With vertical slopes and active landslides, cutting work is extremely risky. NH-10 has already been shut for over two-weeks days this monsoon, severely impacting locals, tourists, and businesses.

While the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is working to address the situation, the scale of damage requires additional support.

I’ve suggested deploying more resources, skilled personnel, heavy-duty machinery, and landslide-resistant materials to speed up restoration and stabilization work. I also recommended using GIS and remote sensing for real-time monitoring and landslide mapping.

Most importantly, I’ve called for stronger coordination among agencies like NHIDCL, IRCON, NHPC, BRO, and the Brahmaputra Board, and a joint meeting with elected representatives, the WB Govt and Sikkim Govt, NDRF, GSI, and expert engineers and geologists to develop a unified, long-term plan for NH-10 and the Teesta Basin.

In the long term, road realignment and an elevated stretch for safety and sustainability should be considered.

Hon’ble Shri Nitin Gadkari ji had convened the meeting in the presence of senior officials from the Ministry and NHIDCL, and directed them to immediately constitute a high-level team to visit NH-10.

He has instructed the team to explore all viable options, including re-alignment, elevated highway corridors, viaducts, and tunnels, to ensure a permanent and time-bound resolution to the persistent issues on NH-10 on a war-footing. He has asked the officials to immediately appointment Project Management Consultant (PMC) for NH-10.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Hon'ble PM Sh. Narendra Modi ji led Union Cabinet for approving four new railway multitracking projects worth Rs 11169 crores, adding about 574 kilometers to the Indian Railways network. This includes the Alubari Road - NJP 3rd and 4th line project, which will make travel faster and more efficient for people using railway in our Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars region.

These projects will improve connectivity across 13 districts in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand.

Speaking in the Parliament today, I placed a formal demand for the development of an Alternative Highway connecting Darjeeling to Siliguri via Balason.

I informed the Parliament, that despite being one of India’s most iconic hill tourism destinations, Darjeeling is facing growing accessibility challenges. The main route to Darjeeling, National Highway 110 (former NH 55), built during the British era, is heavily overburdened.

Designed for far less traffic, it now carries over 15,000 vehicles daily, which is more than double its capacity. This causes frequent traffic jams and gridlocks, during peak hours and tourist seasons. This is severely impacting the lives of the locals, especially students, medical patients and officer goers, and also the tourists and visitors, whose numbers are declining due to massive traffic jams.

To address this, I have requested the government to prioritize the construction of an alternative highway from Siliguri to Darjeeling via Balason. This new route would decongest NH-110 (former NH55) and connect underserved rural areas of Kurseong, Mirik, Sonada, Rangbull, Dhotrey-Pussumbeng, Sukhia Pokhari, and Pokhrebong valley, thereby unlocking economic opportunities and improving regional mobility.

Given Darjeeling’s steep and sensitive terrain, I also called for modern, sustainable transport solutions. I proposed the development of ropeway systems under the Parvatmala scheme, including links from Ghoom to Darjeeling and Darjeeling to Bijanbari, and Delo to Kalimpong, Kalimpong to Relli, and Chitrey. These ropeways would not only offer efficient, eco-friendly travel options, it will also ease pressure on the roads, while enhancing the tourism experience.

I am confident that with the Central and State government support, these initiatives will lay the foundation for a more accessible, economically vibrant, and sustainable Darjeeling, once again reclaiming its legacy as a world-class tourism destination.
