That on 09/03/2026 at around 19:30 hours, a verbal report regarding a missing minor child was received from Beat No. 3. The information was conveyed by the guardian of S* P** Sherpa**, aged about 14 years, S/o Passang Sherpa, R/o Gurasey, Pareng Gaon, Soreng District, presently residing at Shantinagar, Singtam, Gangtok District, stating that the child had been missing since the morning hours.
Upon receiving the information, Singtam Police immediately initiated a search operation. Beat personnel were directed to conduct a thorough search in and around the Shantinagar locality and the river belt of Rani Khola.
Subsequently, a rescue and search team was formed comprising SHO Kishor Kumar Chettri, SA Kushal Chettri, other police personnel of Singtam Police Station, Fire and Emergency Service staff, along with local volunteers and swimmers. The team immediately rushed to the riverside of Rani Khola and launched an intensive search operation.
During the course of inquiry, local children who were playing near the river belt were questioned. One of the children stated that the missing boy had been seen swimming alone in the river at around 14:30 hours. During the search operation, a pair of slippers believed to belong to the missing child was also recovered near a pond adjacent to the river.
Acting swiftly on the available information, SA Kushal Chettri of Singtam Police Station, along with local swimmers, entered the pond and carried out a detailed search operation under the supervision of the SHO and other team members. Due to the prompt response and coordinated efforts of the police and rescue team, the boy was located and retrieved from the pond at a depth of approximately 10 feet.
The child was immediately evacuated to District Hospital, Singtam; however, the Medical Officer on duty declared him brought dead.
Accordingly, based on call book intimation, an Unnatural Death (UD) Case has been registered at Singtam Police Station. Due to the late hours of the incident, further legal formalities will be carried out as per due procedure.
The swift action taken by Singtam Police along with Fire and Emergency Service personnel and local volunteers ensured that the search operation was conducted promptly and the body of the missing child was recovered within a short period.
Singtam Police expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and appeals to the public to remain cautious, especially with minors, around rivers and water bodies.
