5 Common Misconceptions About Diabetes

Diabetes is a complex condition surrounded by many falsehoods. Whether you're newly diagnosed or supporting a loved one, you've likely encountered these widespread myths. These inaccurate beliefs are often oversimplified or just plain wrong and can be found everywhere, from family group chats to social media. When it comes to managing diabetes, it's crucial to rely on scientific facts, not misinformation.

Myth 1: Eating too much sugar causes diabetes.
The Reality: Eating sugar alone doesn't directly cause diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks insulin-producing cells. This is related to genetics and possibly certain viruses, not sugar intake. Type 2 diabetes is influenced by genetics, body weight, age, and overall lifestyle. While a diet high in calories from sugary drinks and junk food can lead to weight gain—which is a major risk factor—sugar itself is not the single cause.

Myth 2: People with diabetes can't eat carbs or sweets.
The Reality: This is simply not true. People with diabetes need to manage their carbohydrate intake, but they can still enjoy carbs and even occasional sweets as part of a balanced diet. The key is moderation and understanding how different foods affect blood sugar. Focus on healthier carbs like whole grains, vegetables, and fruits, and enjoy desserts in moderation, just like anyone else.

Myth 3: Only older people get diabetes.
The Reality: Diabetes can affect anyone, regardless of age. Type 1 diabetes often begins in childhood or young adulthood. Type 2 diabetes is more common in adults, but with modern lifestyles, more children and teens are being diagnosed, especially if they are overweight or have a family history of the condition.

Myth 4: If you have no symptoms, your diabetes isn't serious.
The Reality: You can feel completely fine while still having dangerously high blood sugar. Diabetes is often called a "silent disease" because people can have it for years with few or no symptoms. Even if you feel well, uncontrolled diabetes can cause long-term damage to your heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves. The only way to truly know your health status is through regular blood tests and doctor visits.

Myth 5: You can stop taking medicine once your blood sugar is normal.
The Reality: This is one of the most dangerous myths. Diabetes does not go away. Even when you meet your blood sugar goals, you must continue taking your prescribed medication, eating well, and exercising unless a healthcare provider tells you otherwise. Stopping medication because you feel better can cause your blood sugar to spike, leading to serious health complications.

Other Common Myths

Myth: Insulin is a last resort and a sign of failure.
Reality: Insulin is simply a treatment to help keep your blood sugar healthy, especially for type 1 diabetes or advanced type 2.

Myth: People with diabetes can always tell when their sugar is high or low.
Reality: Many people have no symptoms until their blood sugar levels are dangerously high or low, which is why regular monitoring is essential.

These myths often come from old traditions and are spread through social media. Always get your information from trusted medical sources and healthcare professionals.

Mamring Decomposed Body Case: One Arrested in Siliguri

Three days ago, a decomposed body of a woman was found inside a locked room in a house located in Mamarimg, under Namchi district after local residents raised concerns about a foul odor coming from the house. Upon forced entry, authorities found the woman’s body in an advanced stage of decomposition, suggesting that she may have died several days earlier.

Sources said, following swift action and preliminary investigations, police have arrested one individual in connection with the case. The suspect, who hails from Sikkim, was apprehended in Siliguri and is currently in police custody for further questioning.

Meanwhile, the Namchi Police is set to hold a press conference to share further details about the incident.

Karnataka Police in Mangaluru have arrested seven people in a case involving a minor college student.

A man reportedly met the girl on Instagram, sexually assaulted her, and recorded the act. The video was then shared with others.

According to police, the girl, who is a minor, met the main suspect, Karthik, on Instagram two months before the incident. Their online friendship turned into a relationship. In late June, Karthik invited her to lunch and then took her to a secluded, wooded area.

Police say Karthik sexually assaulted her. Another man, Rakesh Saldana, also reportedly assaulted her while Karthik recorded it on video. Karthik later shared the video with several others.

After the girl filed a complaint, police arrested Karthik and Rakesh. They also arrested five other people for spreading the video. Since the survivor is a minor, the case has been registered as gang r**e under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy confirmed the arrests and said an investigation is underway.
