The fight for Naga identity continues. After 50 years, 91-year-old Naga leader, Thuingaleng Muivah returned to Manipur’s Naga Hills, holding the Naga National Flag, a symbol of decades-long struggle. From joining the Naga National Council in 1964 to fighting for Naga autonomy, Muivah has witnessed history: the 1975 Shillong Accord, the 1997 ceasefire, and the 2015 Framework Agreement.

But he claims India has broken its promises. Muivah now demands a separate Naga Constitution, a distinct Naga flag, and a Greater Nagaland including Naga areas of Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and even Myanmar. He warns that without recognition of Naga identity, peace cannot be achieved.

This is a story of identity, politics, and decades of unresolved demands.

Darjeeling and Sikkim — once called the paradise of the hills — are slowly turning into garbage dumps.

Tourists and locals — both share the blame. Toilets are built, signboards are up, fines exist… but habits haven’t changed.

Cleanliness drives shouldn’t be photo opportunities — they are responsibilities.

If we don’t change now, these hills will one day turn their backs on us.
Watch till the end. Think. Act.

Darjeeling’s legendary steam engines, the heartbeat of the hills, are struggling to keep their whistle alive. Once symbols of heritage and pride, the iconic joy rides of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway are now facing cancellations and delays due to poor-quality coal.

The 125-year-old UNESCO World Heritage marvel, once celebrated for its timeless charm, now battles neglect and fading glory. If this coal crisis continues, Darjeeling risks losing not just a train but a piece of its identity.

Anup Gadal has blamed the PWD for the collapse and delays of the Dudhey Bridge connecting Siliguri to Mirik. The Bridge, originally made of wood, later rebuilt with Tar (Alakatra) and later finished with Iron , the bridge’s failure, according to analysis, was not due to broken pillars but because the soil underneath was disturbed during construction. Renovations have been neglected for 2 years, raising questions about the contractor's honesty and possible corruption in the PWD department. The collapse has disrupted the income sources of Dhudia locals, showing how negligence at the administrative level directly impacts everyday lives.

Anup Gadal also highlighted that if the department knew the bridge required repeated maintenance, why weren’t precautionary measures or an alternative bridge built earlier? “The collapse is not the public’s fault, it is the responsibility of the department and the government,” he said. This incident reflects the ongoing challenges in hilly regions, where delays, mismanagement, and corruption often leave local communities vulnerable.

Every job deserves respect, why isn’t it the same in India? Mr. Arun Agarwal talks about the striking differences between India and abroad, where dignity is given to all workers, whether they're sweeping streets or driving buses. He explains how independence, minimum wage, and fair job opportunities abroad create a society where work and respect go hand in hand.

Mr. Agarwal also highlights how overseas systems focus on merit and clear job requirements, unlike in India, where financial status or occupation often dictates respect. From cleaning your own house to earning a living wage, these small yet powerful practices shape a fairer, more equitable society, lessons India could learn from.

Former BGPM leader Anup Gadal has strongly criticized the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) under Anit Thapa, calling it a complete failure for the people of the hills. He alleged that there has been no real development in regions like Dudhia and Terai and that corruption and neglect have replaced genuine public welfare. Gadal also claimed that ₹5 lakh compensation for affected residents is insufficient, emphasizing that the loss of homes also means the loss of love and memories.

Gadal praised the state government for its initiatives in creating Kalimpong district and improving infrastructure but urged for better monitoring of funds meant for hill development. Addressing the youth, he called for breaking away from the “commission-based” mindset and bringing fresh, honest leadership to ensure the real progress of the Gorkha community and the Darjeeling hills.

North Bengal University has achieved a major breakthrough by successfully cultivating saffron for the first time in Northern India. The cultivation was carried out at the Centre for Floriculture and Agri-Business Management under the University of North Bengal. The project was led by horticulturist Amrendra Pandey, whose guidance played a key role in the success.

Around 80 to 100 saffron bulbs were brought from Kashmir to the university on September 27, 2025. Researchers reported that most bulbs bloomed during the Diwali celebrations, marking a significant moment for the team. The project started on an experimental basis in 2023 using three methods, including laboratory-based aeroponic farming and open-field trials conducted in Darjeeling, Kurseong, and Kalimpong.

Aeroponic farming, the technique used for this success, involves growing plants without soil by suspending bulbs in air and misting roots with nutrient-rich solutions. This method allows year-round cultivation, minimizes water usage, and prevents soil-borne diseases.

Authorities at the university are exploring the possibility of creating a regional saffron brand named Darjeeling Saffron. The achievement is expected to create new income opportunities for farmers in North Bengal and demonstrates the potential of advanced agricultural techniques in regions beyond traditional saffron-growing areas.

In the Dooars region, the closure of tea gardens continues to affect thousands, especially tribal communities with limited access to alternative livelihoods.

While many in the Gorkha community have shifted focus toward education and seen a rise in living standards, tribal families remain largely dependent on traditional estate work, with fewer opportunities for socio-economic mobility.

This segment explores the visible contrast in housing, income, and aspirations, and how education has become a key factor in shaping these diverging realities.
