Jaundice is the yellowish of the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes due to high levels of bilirubin in the blood. It occurs when bilirubin, a waste product from red blood cell breakdown, not properly processed by the liver and excreted in bile. Common causes gallstones ,hemolytic disorders include liver disease like hepatitis or cirrohosis. Symptoms are dark urine, pale stools, and itching, and treatment depends on the underlying cause.
What is jaundice?
It's a medical condition causing a yellowish skin, yellow eyes and mucous membranes.
Cause: A buildup of bilirubin, a yellowish-orange pigment, in the blood.
Bilirubin process: Bilirubin is a waste product created when red blood cells break down. The liver normally processes it so it can be excreted in stool and urine; if it can't, it accumulates in the blood.
Note: Jaundice is a symptom, not a disease itself, and indicates an underlying problem.
Causes
Liver problems: Hepatitis (viral, alcoholic), cirrhosis.
Bile duct issues: Obstructions like gallstones or tumors can block the flow of bile containing bilirubin.
Red blood cell disorders: Conditions that cause red blood cells to break down faster than normal.
Genetic conditions: Such as Gilbert syndrome.
Medications: Certain drugs can cause jaundice as a side effect.
Symptoms
Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (sclera)
Dark-colored urine
Pale or gray-colored stools
Fatigue
Itchy skin .
Abdominal pain.
Fever.
Nausea or vomiting .
Diagnosis: Blood test like Bilirubin test.
