U.S. Ambassador to India and close aide to President Donald Trump, Sergio Gor, heaped praise on Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during his high-profile Mumbai visit on January 17-18, 2026, saying “Maharashtra is on the map for two reasons - Mumbai & CM Fadnavis.”

Wrapping up what he called a “very successful trip to Mumbai,” Gor highlighted the state’s growing importance in the U.S.-India partnership. In a post on X, he confirmed wide-ranging discussions with CM Fadnavis at his official residence, alongside U.S. Consul General Michael Schreuder.

The talks focused on boosting investments and expanding business ties, with both sides exploring opportunities to enhance U.S. investments in Maharashtra and support state-based companies expanding to the U.S.. CM Fadnavis also briefed the delegation on flagship initiatives like the Navi Mumbai International Education City.

In a heart-wrenching yet hopeful turn of events, 53-year-old female elephant Joymoti, who was swept away by the devastating floodwaters in Nagaland during the second week of July and later found in Assam, has been airlifted to Vantara in Jamnagar, Gujarat for urgent and specialised treatment.

Rescued after days of fighting for survival, Joymoti owes her life to the incredible courage of local communities who worked alongside government agencies to pull her from the raging waters. But her ordeal left her critically injured.

She suffered multiple wounds on her forehead, right ear, above her tail, left inner thigh and abdomen, along with a deep, maggot-infested wound around her external ge***al area. Her right eye was severely damaged, leaving her blind in that eye with persistent tearing. Adding to her struggle is a longstanding lameness in her left hind leg from an old fracture sustained during logging work.

After receiving first-aid, wound dressing, pain medication and supportive care locally, veterinarians determined that her age, severity of injuries and mobility issues required advanced hospital care. In a first-of-its-kind mission in India, Vantara, the animal welfare initiative founded by Anant Ambani, decided to airlift her to reduce the physical strain and stress of a long road journey.

Joymoti’s transfer is not a permanent relocation but an urgent medical transfer. At Vantara’s specialised elephant hospital, she is now undergoing comprehensive assessment and round-the-clock veterinary care. Her story has also inspired Vantara to propose three dedicated wildlife veterinary care centres in Assam to ensure future emergencies get help closer to home.

The Tamil Nadu government has instructed officials to stop school and college students, as well as youth, from taking part in protests and agitations organised by Leftist parties and the Tamil Nadu Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).

The directive came from the Department of Collegiate Education under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s administration. Authorities have been told to work together to keep students and young people from joining these political activities.

In a letter dated 17 August, the Commissioner of Collegiate Education directed principals of government arts and science colleges to coordinate with the School Education and Higher Education departments, as well as the police and district administrations. The goal is to ensure that male and female students, along with other youth, do not participate in the protests. The order emphasises joint action across multiple departments.

It refers to an earlier government communication issued on 14 August that called for inter-departmental coordination. The latest letter is marked “Most Urgent” and urges educational institutions to treat the matter seriously, implement the instructions, and adopt suitable preventive steps.

Colleges have also been asked to immediately report the action taken to the Directorate of Collegiate Education.

In a striking and unconventional protest at the Khandwa Collectorate in Madhya Pradesh, a man wearing a realistic German Shepherd dog mask and costume attended the weekly Jan Sunwai (public hearing) on August 18, 2026. Accompanied by Khandwa Municipal Corporation Leader of Opposition Deepak “Mullu” Rathore, the costumed individual sat among officials, gestured, and even folded his hands while a formal complaint was submitted to Additional District Magistrate Kashiram Badole.

The demonstration highlighted the city’s escalating stray dog problem and alleged large-scale irregularities in the civic body’s sterilisation drive. Rathore claimed that approximately ₹40 lakh had been spent over the past four years on dog sterilisation, yet the stray population continued to grow unchecked. He cited 13,225 reported dog-bite cases in the same period, creating widespread fear among residents, especially children, women, and the elderly.

In a theatrical flourish, the “Doggy brother” (reportedly from Delhi) was presented as a sterilised dog that had still fathered six puppies, symbolically questioning the effectiveness and transparency of the programme. Security personnel initially barred the pair due to the unusual attire, but they were allowed inside after opposition leaders intervened. A memorandum demanding a thorough financial and technical probe into tenders, agency eligibility, payments, and on-ground verification of sterilised dogs was formally submitted. ADM Badole assured that a committee would examine the allegations and take action if irregularities were found. The viral video has drawn national attention to both the public-safety crisis and claims of mismanagement in civic animal control efforts.

The probe centers around an illegal syndicate linked to a seizure of 10 leopard skins on the Gwalior-Agra highway.

The Madhya Pradesh State Tiger Strike Force (STSF) initiated a deep-dive investigation after four individuals were intercepted carrying high-value leopard hides. While Wildlife SOS originally claimed its "Forest Watch" anti-poaching unit spearheaded the bust, parallel investigations revealed that two key suspects were directly on the NGO's payroll.

According to officials, accused individuals confessed to lured poaching operations in the buffer zones of Kuno and Sheopur forests. Investigators claim to have uncovered "substantial digital evidence" suggesting the NGO may have staged enforcement actions and orchestrated seizures to falsely build an anti-poaching profile, showcase enforcement success, and attract substantial international grants. Authorities also impounded a vehicle belonging to the organization and recovered leg-hold traps allegedly distributed to local hunters.

Wildlife SOS strongly denies all allegations, calling them a complete travesty of justice. A shocking incident unfolded aboard the Bandra-Ganganagar Aravali Express when 31-year-old Thane-based actress and model Antara Banerjee was arrested following a violent altercation.

Traveling to Surat for a web series shoot, Banerjee allegedly entered a reserved AC coach using a sleeper class ticket. When co-passengers requested her to move, she reportedly refused, triggering a heated argument. The situation rapidly escalated when Ticket Collectors and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel intervened to mediate.

According to officials, Banerjee suddenly became extremely aggressive, stripped off her clothes in the coach, and pulled out a razor blade. She then brandished the weapon, attacking RPF Assistant Sub-Inspector Yamini Kant Mishra, damaging equipment, and injuring herself during the intense scuffle.
