Sonam Wangyal, father of activist Sonam Wangchuk, fasted twice in the 1980s for Ladakh’s Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. In 1984, PM Indira Gandhi ended his Leh hunger strike with a glass of juice, pledging ST recognition. Four decades later, the promise remains unfulfilled. Wangchuk, leading protests for ST status and Sixth Schedule protections, echoes his father’s fight amid arrests and unrest.

Habeeba, a Disha Students' Organization activist at Jamia Millia Islamia, was denied Begum Hazrat Mahal hostel accommodation despite clearing allotment, for refusing to sign a bond curbing her activism on campus issues like democracy and hostel shortages. "It violates our rights," she told The Jamia Times. Previously warned for similar campaigns, she was among 17 students suspended in February. Habeeba plans to challenge the denial in court, citing constitutional violations. JMI’s administration remains silent amid claims of shrinking democratic space.

Jehanabad: Mohammad Mohsin, a 45-year-old vegetable vendor from Kako block, was beaten to death in Kako market on Thursday evening over a Rs 5 disagreement during a toll collection. Mohsin, who supported his family by selling vegetables and fruits on a gamchha in the bazaar, faced a confrontation with market committee officials demanding a Rs 15 “chungi” fee.

With no sales that day, Mohsin offered to pay Rs 10, sparking an argument that escalated into a brutal assault. The fatal attack, triggered by the trivial sum, left Mohsin dead, his body lying in the market for hours as trading continued around it, reflecting a chilling indifference.
The incident has ignited anger among locals, who demand justice and an end to exploitative practices. Police have registered a case, but the tragedy highlights the vulnerability of Bihar’s informal vendors, trapped in a cycle of poverty and unchecked authority.

Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan was acquitted by the Moradabad district court on Tuesday in a 2020 contempt of court case. The case stemmed from allegations of Khan making derogatory remarks against the judiciary. The court found insufficient evidence to uphold the charges, granting relief to the senior SP leader, who has faced multiple legal battles in recent years. Khan’s counsel hailed the verdict as a triumph of justice, while critics questioned the judicial process. Further details on the case are awaited.

A Supreme Court-appointed SIT, led by former judge Justice J. Chelameswar, has given a clean chit to Reliance Foundation’s Vantara wildlife centre in Jamnagar, finding no illegalities in its acquisition of over 200 elephants or violations of wildlife laws. The court dismissed allegations as “vague,” but animal rights groups slammed the verdict as a “whitewash,” raising concerns over corporate-run conservation. Vantara, backed by Anant Ambani, claims to provide world-class animal care across its 3,500-acre facility.

A Rampur court on Friday acquitted Abdullah Azam Khan, son of Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh minister Azam Khan, in a 2019 murder conspiracy case. The case was filed by Congress leader Faisal Khan Lala, who alleged that Abdullah, along with his father and two relatives, plotted to kill him over a land dispute. The court cited insufficient evidence for the acquittal.

Abdullah, a former MLA, remains in Hardoi jail due to other convictions, including a seven-year sentence for forging his birth certificate. The Khan family, facing over 80 cases in Rampur since 2017, has claimed political targeting. This verdict marks another legal relief for them amid ongoing battles in court.
