My Guru Won a Grammy! 🎶
Last night, something truly magical happened. My guru, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, won a Grammy Award! Yes, a Grammy — the most famous music prize in the whole world! I still cannot believe it. When I heard the news, I jumped up and down in my monastery and all the other monks laughed at me. But I did not care. My heart was so full of happiness.
My guru is 90 years old now. Ninety! And he just won his very first Grammy Award. He won it for Best Audio Book, Narration and Storytelling Recording. The audiobook is called *Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama*. In it, he talks about peace, compassion, and how we can all be better people. These are the lessons he has taught me every single day of my life.
What makes me proudest is not just the award itself, but the way my guru responded to it. He said he accepted the award with “gratitude and humility.” He also said, “I don’t see this as something personal, but as a recognition of our shared universal responsibility.” This is exactly how he always is — humble, wise, and thinking about others, never about himself. This is one of the most important lessons he has taught me as a young monk.
Many famous people were also in the same competition. There was a US Supreme Court Justice, a well-known TV host, and even a famous actor. But my guru won! At 90 years old, he showed the whole world that it is never too late to share your wisdom and your message of kindness.
I want to thank everyone who helped make this audiobook possible. A talented producer called Kabir Sehgal worked very hard on it, and a beautiful original score was composed by Indian classical musician Amjad Ali Khan and his sons. A kind Canadian musician named Rufus Wainwright even went on stage to collect the Grammy on my guru’s behalf.
Some countries did not like this news, and that makes me a little sad. But I have learned from my guru that we cannot control what others think or say. We can only control our own hearts and our own actions. And my guru’s heart has always been filled with love and compassion for everyone in this world.
So, last night was not just a big night for my guru. It was a big night for peace. It was a big night for kindness. And it was a very big night for a little monk like me, who feels so proud to learn from the greatest teacher in the world.
