Today marks a monumental day in the annals of agricultural science in Kashmir. In a display of scientific excellence and unwavering commitment, the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) has announced the release of 16 new high-yielding crop varieties. This latest addition takes the total tally of varieties released by the university to an impressive 142, a testament to the institution's relentless pursuit of food security and agricultural prosperity.
The release of these varieties is not merely a statistic; it is a "scientific achievement par excellence." It represents years of rigorous breeding, field trials, and the dedication of the entire SKUAST-K family. These new varieties are designed to address the specific challenges of the Himalayan region, encompassing novelty in yield enhancement, superior quality, and resilience against biotic and abiotic stresses.
For the first time in its history, SKUAST-K has released varieties developed through Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS). This cutting-edge biotechnology allows breeders to select specific traits with high precision, significantly speeding up the breeding cycle.
โ€‹The two pioneering MAS-bred varieties released today are:
โ€‹Shalimar Rice 10: Developed specifically for disease resistance, promising to secure the staple crop of the valley against devasting pathogens.
โ€‹Shalimar Pusa QMH 1: A breakthrough focused on nutritional quality, ensuring that food security is matched with nutritional security.
โ€‹The New Portfolio: 16 Varieties for a Changing Climate
โ€‹The newly released package covers a diverse spectrum of crops, ensuring that farmers across different agro-climatic zones benefit.
โ€‹The Breakdown of Today's Releases:
โ€‹Maize: 6 Varieties (Addressing the needs of rainfed and hilly areas)
โ€‹Pulses: 4 Varieties (Boosting protein availability and soil health)
โ€‹Apple: 2 Varieties (Strengthening the backbone of Kashmirโ€™s economy)
โ€‹Rice: 1 Variety (Shalimar Rice 10)
โ€‹Wheat: 1 Variety
โ€‹Oats: 1 Variety (Fodder and grain security)
โ€‹Brown Sarson: 1 Variety (Oilseed enhancement)
Prof. Shakeel A Mir, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Wadura said: This achievement would not have been possible without the visionary leadership and the hard work of specific research stations working in tandem. We extend our heartiest congratulations to:
โ€‹The Honorable Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-K Prof. Nazir A Ganie for providing the strategic vision, administrative support, and an environment where scientific inquiry can flourish. Prof H R Naik, Director Research and all Plant Breeders and associated scientists of other disciplines for developing 16 new climate resilient crop varieties which were released in 10th State Seed Sub Committee meeting (State Var Release Committee) held on 24.12.2025 at APD, Civil Secretariate Jammu. Shri Shalinder Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary, lauded the "assiduous efforts" of SKUAST-Kashmir, noting the university's pivotal role in serving the farming community through scientific innovation."
โ€‹Furthermore, The Scientists of MRCFC Khudwani (Mountain Research Centre for Field Crops): Your work on rice, particularly the new MAS-bred Shalimar Rice 10, is a game-changer for the valley's paddy farmers.
โ€‹The Team at Ambri Research Station: Your contribution of 2 new Apple varieties ensures that Kashmir remains the fruit bowl of the region.
โ€‹The Experts at DARS (Dryland Agriculture Research Station): Your extensive work on Maize, Pulses, and Oilseeds is critical for the sustainability of dryland farming.
With the number of releases now standing at 142, SKUAST-K has once again proven itself to be a beacon of agricultural innovation. These varieties promise to put more money in farmers' pockets, nutritious food on plates, and resilience in the fields.
โ€‹Congratulations to the entire SKUAST-K fraternity on this historic achievement

Wadura. , December 18: The Dryland Agriculture Research Station (DARS), Rangreth, organized an Awareness-cum-Capacity Building Programme titled โ€œImpact of W**ds on Agriculture, Human Health, and Ecosystemsโ€ at Faculty of Agriculture SKUAST-K Wadura

The event, conducted under the aegis of the Indian Society of W**d Sciences, Jabalpur, was aimed at students and field functionaries of the faculty.

Expert speakers detailed how w**ds aggressively compete with crops for essential resources such as nutrients, water, and sunlight. The programme also raised awareness about the primary mechanisms through which w**ds contribute to significant reductions in crop yield and broader ecological damage.

In his address, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, SKAUST-Kashmir, Wadoora, Prof. Shakeel Ahmad Mir, stated, โ€œW**ds interfere with critical agricultural operations like harvesting and irrigation, leading to yield losses. Effective w**d management is crucial for supporting farmers on a larger scale.โ€

The session featured contributions from several prominent figures, including Dr. Fayaz Ahmed Bahar, Professor-cum-Chief Scientist, DARS, Budgam; Prof. Bashir Ahmad Alie, Head, Division of Agronomy, FOA, Wadura; Prof. Mohammad Ashraf Bhat, Associate Director Research, DARS, Budgam; and Prof. Mohammad Anwar Bhat, Associate Director Education, IE Cell, SKUAST-Kashmir, Shalimar.

Dr. J. S. Mishra, Director of the ICAR-Directorate of W**d Research (ICAR-DWR), Jabalpur, participated as the Guest of Honour via an online connection from Jabalpur. Dr. A. A. Saad, Professor-cum-Chief Scientist (Agronomy), also addressed the gathering.

The occasion also saw the release of a relevant publication, and certificates were distributed to the participants.

The programme was graced by Prof. Shakeel Ahmad Mir, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, who served as the Chief Guest. World Soil Day, internationally recognized following a recommendation by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) in 2002, aims to raise global awareness about the alarming rate of soil degradation, its environmental impact, and the need for sustainable soil management. The observance underscores the indispensable role of soil in sustaining life on Earth. This yearโ€™s global theme, โ€œHealthy Soils for Healthy Cities,โ€ reflected the growing challenge of maintaining soil health amid rapid urban expansion. The theme highlights how healthy soils underpin urban well-being-supporting food security, water purification, green infrastructure, climate resilience, and overall quality of life. The programme began with a welcome address by Prof. Mohammad Auyoub Bhat, who described soil as โ€œthe quiet engine that sustains urban life.โ€ He emphasized that soil is not only vital for agriculture and rural ecosystems but also for the sustainability, resilience, and ecological balance of modern cities. In his keynote address, Prof. Shakeel Ahmad Mir, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, enlightened students on the significance of World Soil Day. He cautioned against unplanned urbanization and the unchecked spread of concrete structures, both of which threaten soil health. He called upon policymakers, urban planners, civil society members, and citizens to adopt nature-based solutions and innovative technologies to protect soil resources and promote sustainable urban development. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 150 undergraduate and postgraduate students, along with faculty members and soil scientists. To mark the occasion, a series of engaging competitions-including quiz, speech, painting, and a mock farmer-expert interaction were organized, showcasing studentโ€™s creativity, awareness, and commitment to soil conservation. Winners of the various competitions were felicitated with prizes during the ceremony. The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. M. H. Chesti, who acknowledged the contributions of faculty, students, and the organizing committees for the successful conduct of the programme.
