From local market to global stage, USWAH enters world modest fashion scene

Waris Fayaz

Srinagar, Oct 24 (KNO): Kashmir’s homegrown modest fashion brand, USWAH, is set to make its mark on the global stage after receiving an invitation to the Modest Fashion and Art Trade Show in Istanbul, scheduled from November 26 to 29, 2025.

The show is set to host 300 global brands, including several Indian designers and outlets that have received official invitations to showcase their work at IFM Istanbul Expo Center.

Bilal Ahmed Khan, the brand’s founder, while talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said the journey has been personal and challenging. “I had to return home from Dubai due to my mother’s health. That decision changed my life. I chose to build something of my own, rooted in our values and identity,” he said.

After returning to Kashmir, Bilal, a resident of Sangrama Sopore, faced a period of uncertainty. “I struggled a lot. I found a marketing job that paid Rs 4,500 a month,” he recalled. But he and his friends decided to take a leap of faith and open their first outlet at Sopore. “Initially, we struggled a lot. We had limited resources and long working hours, but we were determined,” Bilal said.

Drawing inspiration from Turkish dressing styles, the team focused on creating contemporary modest wear with a Kashmiri touch.

In 2025, USWAH received its first major bridal order. “Without thinking anything, I agreed. I was given three months to complete it,” Bilal said. Delivering the order successfully marked a turning point, establishing USWAH as a recognized name in the Valley’s fashion industry.

Co-managed by Sheikh Mudasir Qadir, USWAH now ships globally, excluding Pakistan, with clients in Qatar, Goa, Hyderabad, Maharashtra and Mumbai, alongside hundreds of deliveries across Kashmir. The brand plans to expand with 10 new outlets in the coming year.

USWAH has also emerged as a source of livelihood for many. “Our outlet provides jobs to locals and outsiders. At a time of job crisis in the Valley, we are proud to offer opportunities in design, tailoring, logistics and sales,” Bilal said.

It is pertinent to mention, the Istanbul trade show will bring together designers and artists from around the world, offering USWAH a platform to showcase modest fashion trends that blend style, sustainability and cultural identity.

“This is not just about us. It is about showing that Kashmir can produce global brands while staying true to its culture,” Bilal said—(KNO)

Empowering Kashmir’s Tourism: Sojourn, a Digital Travel Companion, Officially Launched

Srinagar, October 20, 2025: In a landmark event held in Srinagar today, Sojourn – Your Travel Companion, Jammu & Kashmir’s first all-in-one digital travel and tourism platform, was officially launched. The ceremony marked a pivotal moment in the region’s journey toward digital innovation, youth-led entrepreneurship, and sustainable tourism.

The event was attended by an array of dignitaries and thought leaders, with Mr. Tanveer Sadiq, Chief Spokesperson of the National Conference, serving as the chief guest. In his address, Mr. Sadiq emphasized the critical role of innovation, responsible governance, and security in the continued growth of Jammu & Kashmir’s tourism sector.

The Guest of Honor, Mr. Tariq Gani Bedaba, Secretary General of the Kashmir Hoteliers Club, lauded the initiative as a forward-thinking model for integrating local vendors with the global travel economy. Prominent social worker Syed Aijaz Kashani also graced the occasion, highlighting the potential of youth-led initiatives in fostering community development.

Sojourn is the brainchild of Shoqeen Nabi, a third-year B.Tech Computer Science student, and co-founded by Tafheem Irshad Rather, a second-year B.R.I.T student – both from Sharda University. Their vision is a platform that connects travelers directly to verified local service providers, enhancing the tourism experience through transparency, ease, and empowerment.

Representing Sharda University, Mr. Ehtisham Zahan (Deputy Director of Admissions), Dr. Harishankar Shram (Professor), and Mr. Dhanish Noor (Regional Manager Admissions – J&K) reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to nurturing innovation and supporting student entrepreneurs.

The event, eloquently hosted by Abrar Baba, also witnessed the official unveiling of Sojourn’s website. The platform is now open for business onboarding across Jammu and Kashmir, with the full-feature mobile app slated to go live in the coming days. Once launched, travelers will be able to book stays, experiences, and local services — all through a single, intuitive digital interface.

Adding to the day’s celebrations, Miss Ifrana Zargar, recognized as the Pad Woman of Kashmir, and Miss Peer Mehak, a renowned sportsperson, were honored with Awards of Participation, presented by MLA Zadibal in recognition of their contributions to society and community upliftment.

ASEEM Foundation Facilitates Visit of Students from Pune to 06 Rashtriya Rifles (SIKH) on the Line of Control in Remote Region of Keran.

Keran, 13 Oct 25 — In a heartwarming initiative aimed at fostering national integration and strengthening the bond between citizens and the Armed Forces, 06 Rashtriya Rifles (SIKH) and ASEEM Foundation organised a three-day educational and motivational visit for seven students native to Maharashtra, on the Line of Control (LC) in the remote and rugged region of Keran.

The visit provided the young participants with a rare and eye-opening opportunity to witness the life of soldiers serving in extreme conditions, where sub-zero temperatures, isolation, and operational challenges form part of their daily routine. The students interacted closely with the troops, observed their living conditions, and learned about the unwavering dedication and discipline that define life on the nation’s frontlines.

Company commander 06 Rashtriya Rifles (SIKH) said, “This initiative was undertaken to inspire young minds by exposing them to the courage and commitment of our soldiers who guard the nation’s borders with selfless devotion. We believe such experiences instill pride, patriotism, and a deeper sense of responsibility among the youth.”

The Commanding Officer 06 Rashtriya Rifles (SIKH) remarked, “It was a pleasure to host these bright young students and share with them a glimpse of a soldier’s life. Their enthusiasm and curiosity were truly motivating, and such interactions strengthen the connect between the Army and the people we serve.”

Sharing his experience, a student participant said, “Meeting the soldiers and seeing how they live and work in such difficult conditions has changed how I see the word ‘service’. I will never forget their warmth, courage, and love for the nation.”

The students expressed heartfelt gratitude to ASEEM Foundation and the Indian Army 06 Rashtriya Rifles (SIKH) for making the visit possible. For most, it was their first experience in such an environment — one that left them inspired and deeply moved by the resilience and spirit of the soldiers.

This initiative stands as a testament to ASEEM Foundation’s commitment towards youth engagement and nation-building, while reinforcing the spirit of civil-military harmony in the country’s remotest border regions.
