Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed on Saturday that the state has maintained peace and harmony despite limited protests against the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act. In a social media post, Sarma commended the Assam Police for their proactive measures and effective management that ensured the situation remained under control.

He noted that even though the state has a nearly 40% Muslim population, only three locations witnessed minor and peaceful protests, with each gathering involving fewer than 150 participants. Sarma emphasized that these isolated incidents were well-managed and did not disrupt the overall peace across the state.

The Chief Minister highlighted the collective spirit of the people of Assam, applauding their unity regardless of caste, creed, or religion. He shared that the people are now focused on celebrating Bohag Bihu, the Assamese New Year, with great enthusiasm and harmony. The Rongali Bihu celebrations, especially in Guwahati, are expected to bring vibrant cultural festivities, reflecting Assam’s rich heritage and resilient social fabric.

The state's calm and measured response to the Waqf Act has drawn national attention, positioning Assam as a model of peaceful coexistence and community cooperation.

A massive fire broke out in Guwahati’s Jalukbari area on April 8, triggering widespread panic and causing severe property damage. The inferno, which began under unclear circumstances, intensified after at least five LPG cylinders exploded, sending shockwaves through the neighborhood.

Emergency services acted swiftly, deploying four fire tenders to the scene. Despite their relentless efforts, the fire continues to rage, engulfing the area in thick smoke and creating a tense, chaotic atmosphere.

The blaze has destroyed several homes, including properties owned and rented by residents Giasuddin Ahmed and Hafizur Rahman. In addition to residential damage, three motorcycles were reduced to ashes, and valuables worth several lakhs of rupees have been lost.

While officials have yet to confirm the exact cause, early reports point to a possible electrical short circuit. Authorities are urging the public to steer clear of the affected zone to ensure safety and allow emergency crews to operate without obstruction. Firefighting operations are ongoing as the situation remains critical.

Additionally, individuals from the community will no longer be categorized as ‘D’ (doubtful) voters. With around 28,000 cases currently pending, the Chief Minister termed the decision a historic step toward recognizing the Koch Rajbongshis as an indigenous community of Assam. This move addresses years of challenges faced by the community, which has been seeking Scheduled Tribe status and battling identity-related issues across Assam and neighboring regions.
