Japan has suspended imports of Indian mangoes during the peak summer export season over concerns linked to pest-control procedures at India’s Vapour Heat Treatment (VHT) facilities. The move is expected to affect premium varieties such as Alphonso, Kesar, Langra and Banganapalli, impacting exporters and growers already facing heavy crop losses due to extreme heat and erratic weather.

This is the first major restriction by Japan in nearly 20 years after earlier curbs over fruit fly concerns were lifted in 2006 following India’s compliance with Japanese quarantine standards. Reports said Japanese inspectors found deficiencies related to fumigation and disinfection procedures during a March 2026 inspection at a VHT facility in Rehmanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Following the inspection, Japan announced that mango consignments carrying certificates issued after March 25, 2026, would not be accepted. Exporters fear the suspension could hurt India’s agricultural credibility in other international markets as well.
