5 TTP terrorists killed in northwest Pakistan

Peshawar, Jul 20 At least five terrorists of the outlawed TTP were killed and two injured in an operation carried out by security forces in Pakistan's restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday, according to the police.

Eight terrorists were captured alive in the operation conducted by police and the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) in the Malakand district.

Assistant Commissioner Tehsil Dargai Waheedullah Khan told the media that the operation was conducted in the Mehrday area of Malakand.

“Police and CTD took part in the successful operation,” Khan said. “Five terrorists were eliminated and two were injured while eight were captured alive.”

Khan said that the terrorists belonged to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and were behind attacks in the region.

He added that the arrested terrorists were transported to the CTD Centre, while the injured were moved to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Dargai.

Earlier today, nine terrorists were killed and three security officers were injured in an exchange of fire during an operation in the province's Hangu district, police said.

Pakistan has witnessed an uptick in terror activities over the past year, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, after the proscribed TTP ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.

Pakistan ranked second in the Global Terrorism Index 2025, with the number of deaths in terrorist attacks rising by 45 per cent over the past year to 1,081. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has seen an increasing trend of terrorism-related incidents.(PTI)

LG Sinha reiterates commitment to uproot terrorism from J&K

We believe in establishing peace, not buying it; It’s not just a terrorist who needs to be dealt with, but also entire machinery that facilitates terror

In past Individuals linked to terror activities were given government jobs, while victims of terrorism were left to fend for themselves; Naya Jammu and Kashmir just not a slogan, a reality which has evolved in past few years

We are committed to making peace a permanent reality

Srinagar, July 20 : Reiterating the government’s unwavering commitment to uproot terrorism from Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday said that the administration is not striving to “buy peace,” but to establish a lasting and just peace in the region. He asserted that while no innocent will be touched, the guilty will not be spared.

Speaking at an event here, LG Sinha stressed on the pivotal role of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in dismantling the terror ecosystem. “The police have a crucial responsibility to destroy the support system of terrorists—be it financial, logistical, or otherwise,” he said. “It’s not just the terrorist who needs to be dealt with, but also the entire machinery that facilitates terror.”

He criticized the past approach where individuals linked to terror activities were given government jobs, while victims of terrorism were neglected and left to fend for themselves.

Highlighting a new chapter in the region’s healing, the LG mentioned that the administration is now actively working to rehabilitate the families who have suffered at the hands of terrorists. “Many families in J&K have lost their loved ones to terrorism. In some homes, only elderly parents remain after their sons were brutally killed. Thousands were killed at the behest of Pakistan,” LG Sinha said.

He said that on July 13, 40 terror victim families in Baramulla were provided with appointment letters. “Some youth lost their fathers when they were just two years old. Today, we are ensuring that their pain is acknowledged and justice is delivered,” he said.

Calling on the public to stand united with security forces, the LG said that “Naya Jammu and Kashmir” just not a slogan but a reality which has evolved in the past few years. “In this new era, pens and laptops have replaced stones in the hands of youth. Schools and colleges now remain open year-round without the disruption of hartals. Gone are the days of separatist slogans and shutdown calendars. Today, we have calendars filled with national and international events,” he added.

LG Sinha also noted the rise in startups and innovation among youth, a marked shift from past unrest. “In Naya J&K, the noise of factories has replaced separatist slogans. People can now freely take part in religious and cultural events like Muharram processions and Eid Melas, and families can move around without fear and watch movies in cinema halls.”

“People must join hands with security forces. Peace is not just the absence of conflict—it is the presence of justice, opportunity, and hope. And we are committed to making that peace a permanent reality,” LG Sinha said—(KNO)

Congress Alleges Curbs on Protest March in Srinagar,
Karra Says Party Workers Stopped Across Kashmir

Srinagar, July 19, KNT: Congress president for Jammu and Kashmir, Tariq Hameed Karra, on Saturday accused the administration of preventing party workers from reaching the party headquarters in Srinagar, terming the move "undemocratic" and a sign of "administrative frustration."

Addressing reporters at the Congress headquarters in Srinagar, Karra said workers from various parts of the Valley were stopped en route to Srinagar, as the party had planned to submit a memorandum to the Divisional Commissioner demanding restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood.

“We had assembled peacefully to reiterate our demand, but we were barred from hitting the roads and confined to the party headquarters,” Karra said. “This suppression is unacceptable in a democratic setup.”

He added that the party will intensify its protests ahead of the scheduled July 21 march to Delhi, where senior Congress leaders are expected to escalate the campaign for statehood.

Karra expressed gratitude to AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi for writing to the Prime Minister in support of statehood restoration. [KNT]

Shopian to Observe Strike on July 23 Against Dy CEO Office Shift

Meer Irfan

Shopian, July 19, KNT: Political parties and civil society groups in South Kashmir’s Shopian district have jointly called for a complete shutdown on July 23 to protest the alleged politically motivated relocation of the Deputy Chief Education Officer’s office from the district.

The announcement was made during a press conference where leaders from across the political spectrum, along with social activists, condemned the move and termed it a deliberate attempt to undermine the district’s administrative structure.

“This is not an administrative necessity but a politically driven decision meant to weaken Shopian’s representation,” the speakers alleged.

The participants warned that if the decision is not rolled back immediately, the agitation will be intensified in the coming days.

The bandh call has garnered support from various stakeholders, including traders, transporters, and civil society organizations, who pledged to observe a peaceful shutdown in solidarity. [KNT]

Industrial Defaulter Owes Rs 11 Crore, KPDCL Remains Inactive, Accused of Double Standards in Action Against Poor Consumers

Pulwama, July 19, KNT: In a glaring example of alleged selective enforcement, the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) in Kashmir has come under sharp criticism for failing to recover over Rs 11 crore in electricity dues from a private industrial unit in Lassipora, Pulwama—while continuing to disconnect power supply to poor domestic consumers for comparatively minor outstanding amounts.

Sources told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the defaulting unit, ‘Mir Steel Rolling Mill Private Limited,’ has accumulated arrears exceeding Rs 11 crore over an extended period. Despite the staggering dues, authorities have reportedly taken no significant recovery action against the now-defunct unit.

A senior PDD official confirmed that Mir Steel Rolling Mill, located in the Lassipora Industrial Estate, owes the department Rs 11 crore. Although the unit is currently non-functional, the official said that liabilities are still increasing due to penalties imposed on the unpaid balance.

"Every month, a late payment surcharge of approximately Rs 11 lakh is being added as interest, while an additional Rs 4 lakh accrues under demand charges," the official said, adding that failure to settle dues is costing the defaulter an extra Rs 15 lakh per month in total.

The case has raised serious questions about the PDD’s enforcement mechanism, particularly its alleged bias in acting swiftly against small consumers while letting major defaulters continue unchecked. “Poor and middle-class households are having their power supply snapped over pending bills of Rs 500 or Rs 1,000, but influential industrialists with crores in unpaid dues face no action. This double standard is unacceptable,” said a local rights activist in Pulwama.

Sources further disclosed that Mir Steel is not the only industrial unit in Lassipora with large arrears. Several other establishments are said to have defaulted on payments, with no concrete recovery strategy visible on the part of the department.

"Electricity is a basic right, and the PDD must enforce its rules uniformly. Let the law be the same for all—rich or poor," said a local.

With unpaid bills multiplying, the fiscal strain on the already burdened power sector in Jammu and Kashmir is only expected to worsen. [KNT]
