ACB Convicts Duo from R&B Department in Doda

Doda, Sep 18, CNS: Anti-Corruption Court Doda Convicts Syed Ikhlaq Hussain Peer, AEE and Raja Faisal, JE both then posted in PWD(R&B) West Sub Division Doda in trap case

The Hon’ble Judge, Anti-Corruption Court Doda, Ms. Archana Charak, convicted two Engineersβ€”Syed Ikhlaq Hussain Peer, AEE, and Raja Faisal, JEβ€”both then posted in PWD (R&B) West Sub Division Doda, in FIR No. 14/2011 under Section 5(1)(d) read with 5(2) of the J&K Prevention of Corruption Act, Svt. 2006, and Sections 120-B & 161 RPC registered at Police Station VOJ (now ACB).

The court sentenced each accused to rigorous imprisonment for one year and a fine of β‚Ή10,000 under Section 120-B RPC; rigorous imprisonment for one year and a fine of β‚Ή10,000 under Section 161 RPC; and rigorous imprisonment for one year and a fine of β‚Ή10,000 under Section 5(2) of the J&K Prevention of Corruption Act, Svt. 2006.
The case was registered on the complaint of a contractor who had completed blacktopping work on the Doda–Ganeka road. While 75% payment had been released, the accused officers demanded illegal gratification of β‚Ή45,000 for the release of the remaining amount, thereby harassing the complainant.

A trap was accordingly laid at Doda City, during which Raja Faisal, JE, was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe of β‚Ή45,000 in the presence of independent witnesses. He was arrested on the spot, and further investigation revealed the involvement of Syed Ikhlaq Hussain Peer, AEE.

After completion of investigation, a charge sheet was filed before the Hon’ble Court, which, after trial, convicted both accused and awarded the above sentence. (CNS)

Mehbooba M***i claims house arrest preventing her to visit Sopore

Srinagar, Sep 18, CNS: PDP Chairperson Mehbooba M***i, Thursday, said that the decision to place the political leadership under house arrest today, simply to stop us from visiting Sopore to offer condolences on the demise of Professor Abdul Gani Bhat, lays bare the harsh and undemocratic reality in Jammu and Kashmir. What unfolded at Hazratbal Dargah the eruption of spontaneous, raw public anger was not just an isolated incident. It was a loud, unmistakable message from a people pushed to the edge.

The BJP however remains willfully blind to this truth refusing to learn anything from the deep anguish and suppressed emotions that have been building for years now .

It is becoming increasingly clear that the BJP has no interest in peace or healing in Kashmir. Instead, they seem determined to keep the region in a constant state of turmoil weaponising pain and unrest for political mileage across the rest of the country. This cynical approach is not just irresponsible; it is dangerous and utterly reprehensible. (CNS)

ATM at Tral hospital remains shut for 23 days, locals fume over inconvenience

Tral, Sep 18, CNS: The Jammu and Kashmir Bank ATM installed outside Sub-District Hospital Tral in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district has remained closed for the past 23 days, causing serious inconvenience to patients and their attendants who frequently require cash in medical emergencies.

Locals told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the ATM’s shutter has been down and locked for more than three weeks without any explanation from the authorities. Despite repeated pleas to the concerned bank officials, no corrective action has been taken. The situation has left people, especially attendants of patients, exasperated.

β€œWhenever a patient is referred to Srinagar from Tral hospital, attendants are in urgent need of cash. But the ATM has been lying shut for so many days that we have to run from pillar to post to arrange money,” said a local waiting outside the hospital. (CNS)

Nursing Students Block Srinagar-Baramulla Highway in Protest Over Registration Issue

Baramulla, Sept 18, CNS: Traffic movement on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway was disrupted on Thursday after a group of nursing students staged a protest near St. Joseph’s Hospital in Baramulla

Eyewitnesses said that around 40–50 girl students blocked the highway, demanding registration under the Indian Nursing Council (INC). The protesting students alleged that although they had pursued nursing, they were instead registered under the Pharmacist Board (BOPE), which they termed as unjust.

The demonstration led to traffic congestion in the area, causing inconvenience to commuters. Authorities have reached the spot to pacify the students. (CNS)

APSCC Urges Kashmiris to Extend Support to Flood-Hit Punjab

Srinager 18 Sep.(CNS) Expressing deep concern over the deplorable condition of people in Punjab following the recent devastating floods, the All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) has appealed to the people of Jammu and Kashmir to come forward and extend their support to the affected families.

In a statement, APSCC Chairman Jagmohan Singh Raina said that people, irrespective of religion and faith, should rise above differences and help those in distress. He added that such an initiative would send across a strong message of love, compassion, and brotherhood.

Raina recalled that in 2014, when the Kashmir Valley was hit by floods, the people of Punjab came forward with unconditional support. β€œHundreds of trucks carrying food grains and other essential commodities were dispatched to the Valley by the people of Punjab,” he said.

Highlighting the gravity of the present situation, Raina stressed that it is now the moral duty and responsibility of Kashmiris to reciprocate and extend a helping hand to their Punjabi brethren. He informed that some individuals and organizations have already started contributing, but more collective efforts are required.

Making a special mention, the APSCC Chairman lauded the generosity of Balbir Singh, a resident of Srinagar, who has donated 350 tents, 250 tarpaulin sheets, and 100 mattresses for the flood-hit families.

Raina urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to come forward wholeheartedly and assist the people of Punjab in this critical hour of need.(CNS)

Candidate Raises Objection Over Voting Rights of Ineligible Members in KCCI Elections

*Muhammad Yaseen*

Srinagar, Sept 17, CNS: Ahead of the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) elections, a contesting candidate for the Executive Committee has raised strong objections over what he described as the inclusion of ineligible members in the voting process. In a formal representation to the Election Commission of KCCI, he has urged immediate corrective measures to uphold the transparency and credibility of the chamber’s polls.

Citing provisions of the KCCI Constitution and membership rules, the candidate argued that only active members fulfilling mandatory criteria are entitled to voting rights. He alleged that a number of individuals being considered for participation do not meet these basic requirements, which include maintaining a registered office, at least two years of valid business operations, a functional bank account in the business’s name, and compliance with tax obligations such as Income Tax Returns and GST registration where applicable.

The candidate further expressed concern that membership fee deposits of nearly 200 individuals, most of whom, he claimed, are ineligible, were made by incumbent office bearers in a bid to secure electoral advantage. To ensure transparency, he requested that the Election Commission publicly disclose the number of members who paid fees in cash and those who deposited via bank transfer or cheque.

β€œThis is not about individuals but about safeguarding the integrity of the institution. The credibility of KCCI depends on adherence to its own rules and constitution. Granting voting rights to non-compliant members undermines fairness,” he said in the communication.

The objection letter stressed that only members fulfilling all constitutional requirements and paying dues through the prescribed procedure should be allowed to cast their vote. The candidate described his appeal as being in good faith and in the larger interest of maintaining the legality and credibility of the electoral process.

The KCCI, one of the Valley’s oldest and most influential trade bodies, is currently preparing for elections to its Executive Committee, which plays a pivotal role in shaping policy advocacy, business representation, and economic initiatives. Allegations of procedural lapses in elections are not new, and calls for transparency have often accompanied the chamber’s electoral exercises. (CNS)

SIA Arrests Key Narco-Terror Operative After Three Years on the Run

Srinagar, Sept 17, CNS: The State Investigation Agency (SIA) has arrested a key narcotic smuggler wanted in a high-profile narco-terror case.

The accused, identified as a resident of Uri in Baramulla district, had been evading arrest for the past three years. He was apprehended by a special SIA team from Kathua district in Jammu region. Officials described his capture as a severe blow to a narco-terror module allegedly backed by handlers based across the border in Pakistan.

According to investigators, the module was engaged in smuggling narcotics through the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector. Once inside Jammu and Kashmir, the contraband was transported to different parts of the Valley as well as the Jammu region. Proceeds from the illicit trade were then allegedly diverted to finance militant activities, sustaining networks that have been under increasing pressure from security forces.

The case is tied to an FIR registered in 2022, which involved the recovery of one kilogram of he**in, seven kilograms of poppy straw, and four kilograms of poppy seeds. So far, charge sheets have been filed against five members of the same module. The latest arrest, officials say, will help track both forward and backward linkages of the network, with the aim of dismantling its entire structure.

β€œThis arrest is not only the culmination of a long pursuit but also a critical step in cutting off the funding channels that keep militancy alive. With his capture, the SIA hopes to expose more operatives and choke the narco-terror ecosystem,” said an official familiar with the investigation. (CNS)

AIP Demands SRTC Trucks and Additional Railway Bogies to Stabilize Supply Chain

Srinagar, Sept 17, CNS: The Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) has called upon Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to immediately intervene in what it described as a worsening crisis for fruit growers across Kashmir. The party’s Chief Spokesperson, Inam Un Nabi, said the state government could no longer afford to remain passive as orchardists faced soaring transport charges and acute shortages of essential packing material.

Addressing the mounting concerns of the fruit-growing community, Inam said the industry was reeling under a double blow. He pointed out that freight charges for transporting fruit had risen steeply from β‚Ή60 per peti to as high as β‚Ή230 per peti due to a shortage of transporters. Simultaneously, growers are facing a severe lack of packing material, particularly paper and bardaan, which has left them unable to dispatch their produce on time.

β€œThis situation has become unbearable for our orchardists. The fruit industry is the backbone of Kashmir’s economy, yet it is being pushed into crisis. What makes matters worse is that the elected government is nowhere to be seen on the ground,” Inam said.

The AIP spokesperson added that the Chief Minister must take ownership of the crisis rather than deflecting responsibility. β€œThe Chief Minister cannot continue to look for alibis. These issues fall directly under the domain of the elected government. He must step in without delay and provide immediate relief,” he said.

Inam outlined a set of measures the state could take to stabilize the situation. He demanded that the government urgently mobilize State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) trucks to reduce dependence on private transporters and curb exploitative freight rates. In addition, he called on the Chief Minister to personally impress upon the Government of India the need to provide additional railway bogies dedicated to fruit transportation so that the perishable crop can swiftly reach markets across the country.

Kashmir’s fruit industry, particularly apple farming, supports lakhs of families and is considered one of the primary contributors to the Valley’s economy. The current harvest season, however, has been overshadowed by repeated disruptions, including frequent highway closures, weather-related delays, and transport bottlenecks. (CNS)

Govt Acts on Complaints, Enforcement Teams to Monitor Transport Fares in Kashmir Mandis

Srinagar, Sep 17, CNS: The Jammu and Kashmir Transport Department has taken strong note of complaints against transport companies accused of charging exorbitant fares from fruit growers and mandi traders.
To address the issue, the department has directed the formation of Special Enforcement Teams across Kashmir Division.

In an official communication issued by Joint Transport Commissioner Vikas Anand (JKAS), Regional
Transport Officer (RTO) Kashmir and all Assistant Regional Transport Officers (ARTOs) have been instructed to conduct frequent and surprise inspections at major fruit mandis. The move aims to ensure that fruit growers and sellers are not harassed or subjected to unjustified transport fares.

The enforcement teams have been asked to submit daily compliance reports to the Transport Commissioner’s office. Additionally, a dedicated enforcement team led by ARTO Mauzam Ali in Srinagar has been tasked to cover two districts per day and take immediate action in case of complaints.

The directive comes amid mounting concerns from fruit growers and traders who alleged exploitation by certain transport companies during the peak trading season. (CNS)

LG Manoj Sinha Inaugurates Bailey Bridge on Ramban-Gool Road

Ramban, Sept 17, CNS: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday virtually inaugurated a bailey bridge on the Ramban-Gool road, calling it a symbol of resilience and a lifeline for the people of the region. The bridge, completed under challenging circumstances by the Indian Army, is expected to benefit nearly 1.5 lakh people living in Ramban, Sangaldan, and Gool areas by restoring a crucial connectivity link.

In his address, the Lieutenant Governor highlighted the significance of the project in a region recently hit by natural calamities. Heavy rains and landslides had caused extensive damage to infrastructure, leaving communities grappling with economic hardships, disruption in mobility, and limited access to essential services. β€œThe bridge is not just a physical structure but a promise of relief and renewal for the people who endured immense difficulties due to damaged infrastructure,” Sinha said.

He noted that the Ramban-Gool road serves as a vital route connecting multiple communities and that its disruption had severely affected daily life. The completion of the bailey bridge has eased those concerns by ensuring the smooth flow of traffic, movement of goods, and emergency services. β€œIt will significantly boost connectivity and improve the ease of living for local residents,” the LG remarked.

Commending the efforts of the Indian Army, Sinha said the bridge reflects the dedication and commitment of its engineers who worked tirelessly to meet the urgent need. β€œDespite natural disasters and harsh conditions, the brave engineers of the Army showed exemplary resolve and technical expertise. This bridge stands as a testament to their unwavering service to the nation and the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

Locals have also expressed relief at the restoration of the road link. For families in Gool and Sangaldan, the disruption had meant difficulty in reaching hospitals, schools, and markets. Farmers and traders, too, faced mounting losses due to the obstruction in transporting produce and goods. With the bridge now operational, many see it as a turning point for economic activity in the area.

Officials said that beyond immediate relief, the project will have long-term benefits. It will reduce travel time, improve access to government services, and strengthen connectivity with other parts of Jammu division. β€œInfrastructure is central to development, and this bridge will help the region regain its pace of growth after months of disruption,” an official added.

The Lieutenant Governor reiterated the administration’s commitment to strengthening rural connectivity and improving resilience against natural disasters. He said the state government, in collaboration with central agencies, is working on a series of infrastructure projects aimed at securing uninterrupted road access in hilly and disaster-prone areas.

The bailey bridge is expected to serve as both a practical and symbolic achievement, marking a step forward in the region’s recovery and development. (CNS)
