Only Purity Endures All Tests
یہ یاد رہنا چاہیے کہ دل صرف چند خوش آئند اصولوں ہی سے مسخر نہیں ہو جایا کرتے بلکہ انھیں مسخر کرنے کیلئے وہ حقیقی خیر خواہی، نیک نیتی راستبازی، بے غرضی، فراخدلی، فیاضی، ہمدردی اور شرافت درکار ہے جو جنگ اور صلح، فتح اور شکست ، دوستی اور دشمنی، تمام حالات کی کڑی آزمائشوں میں کھری اور بے لوث ثابت ہو۔

It must be remembered that hearts are not won over merely by a few pleasant principles. To truly win them over, what is required is genuine goodwill, sincerity, honesty, selflessness, generosity, compassion, and nobility—qualities that remain pure and selfless through the toughest tests of all conditions: war and peace, victory and defeat, friendship and enmity.

The Collective Perspective on Sacrifice By Syed Abul A'la Maududi (رحمہ اللہ)
قربانی کا اجتماعی نقطہ نظر
دنیا کی کوئی قوم ایسی نہیں ہے جو اپنی تقریبات پر، اپنے میلوں پر اور اپنے قومی اور بین الاقوامی تہواروں پر لاکھوں ‏کروڑوں روپیہ صرف نہ کرتی ہو۔ ان چیزوں کے تمدنی، اجتماعی اور اخلاقی فوائد اس سے بہت زیادہ ہیں کہ کوئی قوم محض ‏دولت کے گز سے اسے ناپے اور روپے کے وزن سے اسے تو لے ۔ آپ یورپ اور امریکہ کے کسی سخت مادہ پرست آدمی کو ‏بھی اس بات پر قائل نہیں کر سکتے کہ کرسمس پر ہر سال جو بے شمار دولت ساری دنیائے عیسائیت صرف کرتی ہے یہ ‏روپے کا ضیاع ہے ، وہ آپ کی اس بات کو آپ کے منہ پر دے مارے گا اوربلا تامل کہے گا کہ دنیا بھر میں بٹی ہوئی بے ‏شمار فرقوں اور سیاسی قومیتوں میں تقسیم شدہ مسیحی ملت کو اگر ایک بین الا قوامی تہوار منانے کا موقع ملتا ہے تو اس کے ‏اجتماعی اور اخلاقی فوائد اس کے خرچ سے بہت زیادہ ہیں۔ یہی معاملہ ان دوسری اجتماعی تقریبات کا ہے جو دنیا کی مختلف ‏قومیں وقتا فوقتا مشترک طور پر مناتی ہیں۔ حالانکہ دنیا کی کسی قوم کی تقریبات اور تہواروں میں وہ بلند اور پاکیزہ روحانی، ‏اعتقادی اور اخلاقی روح موجود نہیں جو ہماری عید الاضحیٰ میں پائی جاتی ہے لیکن باقیوں کی طرح ہماری عیدیں بھی شرک ‏و فسق اور مکروہات و بے جا تصرفات سے خالی نہیں ہیں۔

There is no nation in the world that does not spend millions—even billions—on its festivals, fairs, and national or international celebrations. The cultural, collective, and moral benefits of such events are far greater than what can be measured merely by wealth or weighed in terms of money. Even the most hard-headed materialist in Europe or America would never accept the claim that the massive amounts of money spent every year on Christmas by the Christian world is a waste. If you tried to convince him of that, he would outright reject your argument and say without hesitation that for a Christian community spread across the world, fragmented into countless sects and divided into separate political entities, the opportunity to celebrate a shared international festival like Christmas brings social and moral benefits that far outweigh the costs.

The same is true for other collective occasions celebrated jointly by different nations across the globe. Yet, none of these celebrations of the world’s nations possess the lofty, pure spiritual, ideological, and moral essence that our Eid al-Adha carries. However, just like others, our Eids too have not remained free from elements of shirk (polytheism), open sin, objectionable acts, and needless extravagance.

When Cannons Faced Prayers: A Wake-Up Call from History — Abul Kalam Azad رح
اٹھارویں صدی کے اواخر میں جب نپولین نے مصر پر حملہ کیا تو مراد بک نے جامع ازہر کے علماء کو جمع کر کے ان سے مشورہ کیا تھا کہ اب کیا کرنا چاہیے۔ علماء ازہر نے بالاتفاق یہ رائے دی تھی کہ جامع ازہر میں صحیح بخاری کا ختم شروع کر دینا چاہیے کہ انجاحِ مقاصد کے لیے تیر بہدف ہے۔ چنانچہ ایسا ہی کیا گیا۔ لیکن ابھی صحیح بخاری کا ختم ، ختم نہیں ہوا تھا کہ اہرام کی لڑائی نے مصری حکومت کا خاتمہ کر دیا۔ شیخ عبدالرحمٰن الجبرتی نے اس عہد کے چشم دید حالات قلم بند کیے ہیں اور بڑے ہی عبرت انگیز ہیں ۔ انیسویں صدی کے اوائل میں جب روسیوں نے بخارا کا محاصرہ کیا تھا تو امیر بخارا نے حکم دیا کہ تمام مدرسوں اور مسجدوں میں ختم خواجگان پڑھا جاۓ ۔ ادھر روسیوں کی قلعہ شکن توپیں شہر کا حصار منہدم کر رہی تھیں ۔ ادھر لوگ ختم خواجگان کے حلقوں میں بیٹھے، "یـا مـقـلـب القلوب یا محول الاحوال“ کے نعرے بلند کر رہے تھے۔ بالآخر وہی نتیجہ نکلا جو ایک ایسے مقابلہ کا نکلنا تھا۔ جس میں ایک طرف گولہ بارود ہو، دوسری طرف ختم خواجگان!

دعائیں ضرور فائدہ پہنچاتی ہیں مگر انہی کو پہنچاتی ہیں جو عزم و ہمت رکھتے ہیں۔ بے ہمتوں کے لیے تو وہ ترک عمل اور تعطل قویٰ کا حیلہ بن جاتی ہیں..!!

In the late 18th century, when Napoleon invaded Egypt, Murad Bey gathered the scholars of Al-Azhar and consulted them on what should be done. The scholars of Al-Azhar unanimously suggested that a recitation of Sahih Bukhari should be initiated in the Al-Azhar Mosque, as it is a sure remedy for the achievement of goals. Accordingly, this was done. However, the recitation of Sahih Bukhari had not even been completed when the Battle of the Pyramids brought an end to the Egyptian government. Shaykh Abdul Rahman Al-Jabarti recorded the eyewitness accounts of that era, and they are deeply thought-provoking.

In the early 19th century, when the Russians laid siege to Bukhara, the Amir of Bukhara ordered that Khatm-e-Khwajgan (a form of collective prayer) be recited in all madrasas and mosques. On one hand, the Russian cannons were demolishing the city's defenses, and on the other hand, people were sitting in prayer circles chanting, "Ya Muqallibal Quloob, Ya Muhawwilal Ahwaal" (“O Turner of hearts, O Changer of states”). Eventually, the outcome was exactly what one would expect from a contest where one side had artillery and the other had only prayers.

Prayers certainly bring benefit — but only to those who have determination and courage. For the faint-hearted, they become merely an excuse for inaction and the weakening of resolve.
