J&K Cabinet to Meet in Srinagar, Assembly Session on Agenda

​Srinagar, Aug 22 (KNC): The Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet is scheduled to meet at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar on Friday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

The meeting is expected to recommend dates for convening the Assembly session, which is a key item on the agenda, sources told news agency Kashmir News Corner --- KNC.

​This will be the first Cabinet meeting since the recent cloudburst tragedies in Kishtwar and Kathua, which have claimed numerous lives.

The government's response to these natural calamities and the rehabilitation of victims are also on the agenda, sources said.

​Cabinet will also discuss other significant issues, including a proposal to clear pending House Rent Allowance (HRA) for government employees and strategies to promote tourism in the region.

​Decisions taken during the meeting will be forwarded to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for his approval. (KNC)

1 Pilgrim Killed, 35 Others Injured In Samba Road Accident

Jammu, August 21(GNS): Atleast one pilgrim was killed while thirty five others were injured after the bus they were travelling in met with an accident at Jatla area of Samba district on Thursday.

Officials told GNS that a bus bearing registration number UP81BT carrying pilgrims of Mata Vaishno Devi shrine met with an accident near Jatla area.

In this incident, one pilgrim was killed and thirty five others were injured. All the injured have been shifted to nearby hospital for treatment, where from 6 were shifted to AIIMS.

J&K FDA Issues Public Notice on Mandatory Compliance for Sale of Frozen Meat and Chicken

Srinagar, Aug 21: The Jammu and Kashmir Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has directed all Food Business Operators (FBOs), including manufacturers, processors, wholesalers, retailers, cold storage operators, transporters, and e-commerce platforms, to strictly comply with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and Packaging and Labeling Regulations, 2020 in relation to the sale of frozen raw meat, chicken, and related products.

The public notice, issued by Commissioner Food & Drugs Administration, J&K, Smita Sethi, emphasized that frozen meat and meat products must be stored and transported at -18°C or below at all stages, from production to sale. Short-term chilled storage at 4°C is permissible only for a maximum of two to four days prior to consumption. Products stored at -18°C or lower must be consumed within twelve months from the date of freezing.

The FDA as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust further directed that every package of frozen meat or chicken must clearly display the name of the product, list of ingredients, declaration of non-vegetarian status, net quantity, batch or lot number, date of manufacture/packing, expiry or use-by date, storage conditions, manufacturer/packer/importer details, FSSAI license number, and logo. For online sales, the shelf life at the time of delivery must not be less than 30% of the total shelf life or at least 45 days before expiry, whichever is earlier.

Non-compliance will attract strict enforcement action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, including seizure of non-compliant stock and penalties up to ₹5 lakh. Offenses involving unsafe food are punishable with imprisonment up to six years and fines up to ₹5 lakh.

The Commissioner urged all FBOs to review and upgrade their operations, ensure full compliance, and remove any non-compliant products from outlets and online platforms to safeguard public health. [KNT]

Tourism Dept Scam Unearthed, ACB Registers Case Over Fund Misuse

Srinagar, Aug 20 (KNC): Anti-Corruption Bureau Kashmir has filed an FIR in connection with a financial scam in the Directorate of Tourism after detection of fraudulent entries in the J&K PaySys system, leading to misappropriation of lakhs of rupees by officials.

Spokesperson in a statement issued here to news agency Kashmir News Corner --- KNC reads, ACB registered a case in connection with misappropriation of government funds and tampering in J&K Paysys in the Accounts Section of the Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir.

On receipt of a written complaint, a preliminary enquiry was conducted by the Anti-Corruption Bureau, which revealed that public servants posted in the Accounts Section, namely Javed Ahmad Bhat, Junior Assistant (then In-charge Bill Clerk) and Tawseef Dilshad Zargar, MTS (then Assistant to Bill Clerk), fraudulently manipulated the Government’s sensitive software J&K PaySys, statement reads.

Statement further reads, They altered the account numbers of legitimate agencies in whose favour payments were due, replacing them with their own bank account numbers or those of their close relatives. Through this manipulation, the accused facilitated the illegal transfer of government funds into their own accounts and those of their family members, thereby misappropriating public money to the tune of lakhs of rupees, it reads.

The enquiry further established that the accused public servants, by abusing their official positions and acting in well-knit conspiracy with each other and others, fraudulently conferred undue pecuniary benefits upon themselves at the cost of the government exchequer, statement reads.

The acts of omission and commission on their part constitute offences punishable under Sections 7, 13(1)(a) & 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and Sections 120-B, 420, 467 of IPC. Accordingly, FIR No. 16/2025 has been registered against 1. Javed Ahmad Bhat, Junior Assistant (
