SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 6: (JKNN) Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today reviewed the preparations for the third edition of the Kashmir Marathon and called for a stronger national and international outreach to attract runners from across India and abroad and establish the event as a major global sporting attraction.
Chairing a high-level meeting to review arrangements for the October 25 marathon, the Chief Minister directed the Tourism Department and other concerned agencies to intensify publicity for the event, including through leading running and fitness influencers.
He called for inviting prominent runners and fitness influencers to Kashmir ahead of the event to generate greater interest and build wider visibility around the marathon.
The Chief Minister also stressed the need to leverage the event’s substantial prize purse to attract competitive runners from outside Jammu and Kashmir.
The Kashmir Marathon 2026 carries a total prize purse of ₹3.17 crore, including ₹2.11 crore for the Full Marathon and ₹1.06 crore for the Half Marathon. A dedicated J&K Local Category, with an additional prize component of ₹25 lakh, has also been introduced to encourage and recognise local talent.
To expand participation beyond competitive runners, the Chief Minister called for introducing an untimed 5K Fun Run, providing an opportunity for families, young people and amateur runners to participate in the event.
He also proposed a virtual participation of runners in Kashmir Marathon’s next edition to enable runners from different parts of the country and the world to participate remotely and become part of the Kashmir Marathon experience.

*Two Injured After Auto-Rickshaw Rolls Down On Mangota Road In Thannamandi Rajouri*

Rajouri, Oct 6 (GNS): At least two persons were injured after an auto-rickshaw they were travelling in rolled down on Mangota Road in Thannamandi area of Rajouri district on Tuesday morning.

Officials told GNS that auto-rickshaw bearing registration number JK11K-1306 met with an accident on Mangota Road and rolled down, resulting in injuries to two persons on board.

Soon after the accident, locals rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to hospital for treatment.

Police have taken cognizance of the incident, they said.(GNS)

Rain, Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Forecast Across J&K From Today

Srinagar, Oct 6: KNT: Weather conditions are set to turn unsettled across Jammu and Kashmir from Tuesday, with the Meteorological Centre Srinagar forecasting rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds at various places over the coming days.

According to the latest forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is expected across Jammu and Kashmir on Oct 6, while isolated to scattered rainfall is likely on Oct 7 and 8. Another spell of fairly widespread to widespread rain is forecast for Oct 9, followed by isolated to scattered rainfall on Oct 10 and 11.

Thunderstorms and lightning are likely to accompany the weather activity, with gusty winds also expected. The IMD has issued warnings for thunderstorms, lightning and squall for Jammu and Kashmir for Oct 6 through Oct 10. No warning is indicated for Oct 11 and 12.

The forecast comes after several days of unusually warm conditions across the region. IMD data showed Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 30.8°C on Oct 5, while Jammu recorded 33°C. Qazigund recorded 31°C, Kupwara 31.6°C and Kukernag 30.4°C.

Minimum temperatures on Oct 6 remained relatively mild, with Srinagar recording 14°C, Pahalgam 7.8°C and Gulmarg 9.4°C, while Jammu recorded a minimum of 23.6°C.

The change in weather is expected to bring relief from the recent warm spell, while residents, motorists and people travelling to higher reaches have been advised to remain attentive to weather updates, particularly during periods of thunderstorms and gusty winds. [KNT]

J&K Govt Approves Land For Mobile Towers In 12 Underserved Areas To Boost Connectivity

Srinagar, Oct 6(GNS): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has approved provision of land for installation of mobile towers in underserved areas of the Union Territory.

In a post on X, as per GNS, the Chief Minister said land has been approved in Uri, Tangmarg, Karnah, Kalakote, Kralpora, Basantgarh, Khour, Latti Marothi, Banihal, Pogal Paristan, Ramsoo and Qila Darhal, under the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF).

He said the initiative is aimed at expanding high-speed telecom coverage across J&K.

The move will strengthen connectivity in remote and border villages, support online education and access to e-governance services, improve emergency communication and bridge the digital divide, Omar Abdullah said.(GNS)

Parents in Kashmir Seek Revision of School Timings to 10 AM Amid Changing Weather

Srinagar, Oct 5: KNT: With temperatures beginning to fall and morning weather turning colder across Kashmir, parents have urged the School Education Department to revise the existing school timings in the Valley and allow classes to begin at 10 am instead of the present 9 am schedule.

Parents said the change in weather, particularly colder mornings, has made it increasingly difficult for young students to leave home early and reach schools at the existing reporting time. They have sought a suitable revision in the morning schedule, saying a later start would provide relief to students as the season changes.

The demand comes days after the Directorate of School Education Jammu revised school timings in the Jammu Division with effect from Oct 1. Schools in the Summer Zone are functioning from 9 am to 3 pm, while those in the Winter Zone are observing timings from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.

In Kashmir, the Directorate of School Education had revised timings from Apr 1, with schools within Srinagar municipal limits functioning from 9 am to 3 pm and institutions outside Srinagar municipal limits and in other parts of the division from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Parents have now requested the authorities to review the existing schedule in view of the changing weather conditions and consider starting schools at 10 am, particularly to avoid exposing children to colder morning conditions. [KNT]
