Two to four years ago, you would wake up in a Kashmiri village to the sound of sparrows on rooftops.
Today, many of those small birds are missing.
In our towns and villages, common birds like the House Sparrow are rarely seen. The morning soundscape has changed. Streets feel quieter.
Possible reasons:
Concrete houses replaced old wooden homes. No space for nests.
Fewer kitchen gardens and orchards.
Heavy pesticide use killed insects. Birds lost food.
Fast urban growth reduced green cover.
Pollution and environmental stress.
At the same time, wetlands like Wular Lake and Hokersar Wetland still attract migratory birds. But our local resident birds in villages seem to be declining.
Look around your area.
Do you still see sparrows near your home?
Do you hear the same morning sounds as before?
It is time to observe.
It is time to document.
It is time to protect what is quietly disappearing
