14 Newborns Killed in Fire at PIMS Hospital in Islamabad

At least 14 newborn babies were killed after a fire broke out in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad on Wednesday morning.

According to rescue officials, the fire erupted at around 6:45 a.m. after an air-conditioning compressor reportedly exploded inside the nursery. The ward was housing 15 newborns at the time, of whom only one was rescued alive.

Firefighters and rescue teams rushed to the scene and brought the blaze under control. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the hospital's fire-safety and emergency-response measures.

Tibet, China — August 26 A mudslide originating on the Nepalese side struck Gyirong Port in Tibet’s Shigatse region, causing major casualties and leaving people missing, according to Chinese state media. Roads, communications and power have been cut, while rescue operations are underway.

A massive flash flood struck the Bhotekoshi/Trishuli river system in Nepal's Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts on the morning of Wednesday, August 26, 2026, apparently triggered by an ice-and-rock avalanche that dammed and then unleashed the river, sweeping away villages, roads, bridges, and hydropower projects near the Nepal–China (Tibet) border.

As of the latest reports, Nepal police have confirmed 95 deaths, with 28 police personnel also among the missing, while China has reported at least three deaths and around 265 people still missing on its side of the border in Gyirong county, Tibet.

Nepal officials say 403 people are reported missing, including 341 foreign nationals, with 133 of them Indian pilgrims traveling to Mount Kailash, along with 47 Americans, 34 Australians, 33 Britons, and 24 Canadians; people from at least 26 countries were reportedly in the affected area, and 62 missing Nepali citizens were among locals trekking near Gosaikunda lake during the Janai Purnima festival.

Search-and-rescue operations are ongoing on both sides of the border, with Nepal requesting help from India and China, and Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah has urged the nation to stay united, pledging government support for rescue, treatment, food, and shelter, while Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered authorities to intensify search efforts. Given the number still missing and difficulty of terrain, the toll is likely to keep rising۔

5 August: A Day That Reshaped Jammu and Kashmir

5 August remains one of the most consequential and controversial dates in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. On this day in 2019, the Government of India revoked the region's special constitutional status by effectively rendering Articles 370 and 35A inoperative and reorganizing the former state into two Union Territories.

For many Kashmiris, this decision represented a unilateral alteration of the region's constitutional and political status without the consent of its people. Critics argue that it weakened democratic representation, undermined constitutional commitments, and intensified uncertainty over the future of Jammu and Kashmir.

The developments of 5 August were accompanied by sweeping security measures, communication restrictions, and the detention of numerous political leaders. These actions drew concern from human rights organizations and prompted debate within the international community over civil liberties and democratic rights in the region.

Supporters of the decision have argued that it promotes administrative integration, economic development, and equal application of laws.
