Not Every Kidney Stone Needs an Operation: Let Awareness Come Before Intervention

A kidney stone can be frightening. The word “stone” itself often makes people believe that surgery is the only solution. But the reality is more nuanced: not every kidney stone requires a surgical procedure.

Many small stones, particularly those that are not causing significant obstruction, infection, kidney damage, or uncontrolled pain, may pass naturally with appropriate medical management and observation. The decision depends on factors such as the size and location of the stone, symptoms, urinary obstruction, infection, kidney function, and whether the stone is progressing or remaining stable.

The public therefore needs to understand one important principle: a scan showing a kidney stone does not automatically mean an operation is necessary.

At the same time, this message should not be misunderstood as an argument against surgery. Some stones absolutely do require intervention—especially when there is persistent obstruction, infection, deteriorating kidney function, severe or recurrent symptoms, or a stone that is unlikely to pass on its own. In such situations, delaying appropriate treatment can itself be dangerous.

The real concern is that healthcare should never become a race between a scan and a surgical procedure. A patient deserves an explanation of all reasonable options before making a decision. Observation, medication, follow-up imaging, minimally invasive treatment, or surgery may each have a place depending on the individual case.

There is also a larger issue that society must discuss. Whenever financial interests enter healthcare, the patient can become vulnerable to unnecessary investigations or interventions. The public should therefore remain alert to any situation where a procedure is presented as the *only* option without a clear explanation of alternatives, benefits, risks, and the consequences of waiting.

Ask questions. Seek a second opinion when the situation is unclear. Understand the size and location of the stone, whether there is obstruction or infection, and why a particular treatment is being recommended.

Healthcare should ultimately be guided by one principle: *the patient's best interest—not the procedure itself.*

An informed patient is not a difficult patient. An informed patient is a protected patient.

Six Months Without Pay, AAYA Workers Urge Government to Release Pending Salaries. Zubeena khan

Kupwara: District President of the AAYA Association, Kupwara, has appealed to Education Minister Sakina Itoo and the Director of Samagra Shiksha to immediately release the pending salaries of AAYA workers, which have remained unpaid for the past six months.
Addressing the issue, the association president zubeena Khan said that AAYA workers receive a monthly honorarium of only ₹5,000, yet they are forced to wait for months to receive even this modest amount. She said the workers, most of whom are women, continue to discharge their duties with dedication despite facing severe financial hardship.
She urged the authorities to take immediate steps to clear the pending dues, saying the honorarium is crucial for meeting the basic needs of the workers and their families. Expressing hope that the government will respond positively, she said the release of salaries would bring much-needed relief and restore smiles on the faces of the AAYA workers.
The association has appealed to the government to ensure timely payment of salaries in the future to avoid further hardship.

*After Decade-Long Wait, Lower Rajwar Water Supply Project Nears Completion; 25,000 Residents Across 13 Villages to Benefit*

Handwara, Aug 5: Bringing relief to thousands of residents after nearly a decade of delay, the much-awaited Lower Rajwar Raw Water Main Project in Handwara is in its final stage, with testing currently underway. Officials said the project is expected to be commissioned later this week.

The project, executed by the PHE Division Handwara/Baramulla, Aijaz Ahmad involves the laying of a 9-kilometre-long, 200 mm diameter Ductile Iron (DI) Raw Water Main, connecting the source to the filtration plant and service reservoir.
Once commissioned, the scheme will provide an improved drinking water supply to nearly 25,000 people across 13 villages, including Dudipora, Bakiakher, Baderher, Budkot, Machipora, Khirman, Nabedzab, Nagranar, Baderkali, Bahadarpora, Goriakher, Wadipora and Lachipora.

Official told that project has reached its final testing phase and will soon be made operational, significantly improving water supply in the Rajwar area.

Local resident Ghulam Hassan expressed happiness over the development, saying the project had remained pending for nearly 10 years.

"We are very happy that this long-pending project is finally becoming a reality. Since Executive Engineer Aijaz Ahmad took charge, the work has gained momentum and has now reached completion. It is a huge relief for the people of Rajwar," he said.

Another resident, Gowhar Ahmad, appreciated the progress and urged the authorities to expedite other pending drinking water schemes in the area.

"We appeal to Executive Engineer Aijaz Ahmad to ensure that the remaining water supply projects are also completed at the earliest so that more villages can benefit from reliable drinking water facilities," he said.

The commissioning of the Lower Rajwar Water Supply Project is expected to address a long-standing drinking water shortage in the region and significantly improve access to safe and dependable water for thousands of residents.
