The three-day Asian Games Wushu Selection Trial concluded today at the Sher-e-Kashmir Indoor Sports Complex (SKISC), Srinagar, marking a proud moment for the Union Territory as 12 athletes from Jammu & Kashmir secured their place among the shortlisted contenders for the prestigious continental event.
Nearly 200 athletes from across India competed in the Sanda events, with seven athletes in each weight category shortlisted for the next stage as per the directives of the Wushu Association of India (WAI). The berths of World Championship participants have been reserved.
The Taolu Selection Trial will follow in Imphal from August 25 to 27, after which four athletes in each event will be shortlisted for the November Ranking Tournament. A total of four Ranking Tournaments will be held before the final entry deadline, with eight athletes in each event eventually earning spots in the final Asian Games squad.
The concluding day in Srinagar was graced by WAI General Secretary Vijay Saraf, CEO Suhel Ahmed, and Dronacharya Awardee Kuldeep Handoo, who congratulated the athletes and expressed confidence in Indiaโs strong medal prospects at the forthcoming Asian Games.
As part of preparations, a National Wushu Coaching Camp will be organized in October, followed by a 45-day foreign exposure training in China in December, along with three more international training camps leading up to the Games. These initiatives are expected to sharpen skills and boost medal chances.
