Congress Demands Urgent Relief, Rehabilitation for Cloudburst Victims

Bandipora, Aug 4: Senior Congress leader & Distrct President Bandipora Advocate Sheikh Farooq Habeeb has called upon the district administration to fast track relief and rehabilitation efforts for families devastated by the recent cloudburst in District Bandipora especially Arin, and Ajas & Dardpora.
In a statement, Advocate Farooq noted that the disaster had left a trail of destruction, damaging homes, farmland, and other property across the affected villages of Distrct Bandipora. He pressed for a thorough and transparent survey of the losses, insisting that all eligible victims receive their due compensation without further delay.

Advocate Farooq also called for the swift repair of damaged roads and restoration of essential public services, stressing that continued disruption was adding to the suffering of already distressed residents. He reaffirmed the Congress party's solidarity with the affected families, pledging that the party would continue to press their case before the authorities until adequate and timely relief reaches every household in need.

Bandipora Police Conduct Massive Rescue Operations, Save Over 80 Lives Amid Cloudbursts and Flash Floods

Bandipora, August 3: Following multiple cloudbursts and flash floods triggered by incessant rainfall across Bandipora district, Bandipora Police launched extensive rescue and evacuation operations, ensuring the safety of more than 80 people and preventing any loss of life.

Acting swiftly under the directions of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bandipora, police teams were immediately deployed to the affected areas of Arin, Dardpora, Sumlar, Aragam and other vulnerable locations after reports of cloudbursts and rising water levels.

In Neelupati Sirender, police rescued over 80 stranded persons and shifted them to safer places. In Tota Mode, two families whose houses were damaged in flash floods were safely evacuated, while three residential houses sustained damage in Sathri.

In Gori Hajin, Aragam, police personnel, with the assistance of JCB machines, evacuated several families trapped by floodwaters. Police also rescued passengers stranded near the Tangwani-Garoora bridge after a sudden rise in the water level posed a serious risk.

Despite damage to residential houses and infrastructure at several locations, no casualties have been reported due to the prompt response and coordinated efforts of the police and other emergency agencies.

Police personnel continue to be deployed in vulnerable areas to monitor the situation, assist affected residents, and respond to any emergencies. Bandipora Police have appealed to the public to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary movement in flood-prone areas and follow advisories issued by the district administration.

The timely response of Bandipora Police has been widely appreciated by residents, who commended the force for its dedication, professionalism and unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives during the natural calamity.

Silent Slaughter in Wular Lake: Illegal 'Bengali Nets' Are Destroying the Future of Kashmir's Fisheries

Former Minister & Ex-MLA Bandipora Usman Majid calls for an immediate crackdown on destructive fishing practices, warning that Wular's fish population is disappearing at an alarming pace.

Former Minister and Ex-MLA Bandipora Usman Majid has voiced serious concern over the alarming decline in the fish population of Wular Lake, attributing it to the growing use of large fishing nets, locally known as "Bengali nets," by a section of fishermen. He described the practice as one of the biggest threats to the lake's fragile aquatic ecosystem, saying these oversized nets indiscriminately trap fish of every size, including juvenile fish and breeding stock, leaving little opportunity for natural regeneration. He warned that if this destructive practice is not stopped immediately, Wular Lake could lose much of its fish wealth, resulting in a sharp decline in fish production and pushing hundreds of families dependent on fishing towards economic distress.

Majid, said Wular Lake has for generations sustained the livelihoods of thousands of fishermen and served as one of Kashmir's richest freshwater fisheries. However, unchecked exploitation through illegal fishing methods is pushing the lake towards an ecological crisis. He said protecting fish stocks is not merely an environmental responsibility but an economic necessity for the survival of the traditional fishing community. He appealed to all genuine fishermen to reject such harmful practices and work collectively to conserve the lake's fish resources for future generations.

Calling for urgent intervention, Majid urged the Lieutenant Governor's Administration, the Jammu & Kashmir Government, the Director of Fisheries, the Fisheries Department, the District Administration Bandipora, and all concerned agencies to launch a comprehensive drive against the use of illegal "Bengali nets." He demanded regular inspections, seizure of prohibited nets, strict enforcement of fisheries laws, and continuous monitoring to prevent further destruction of fish stocks. He said the administration must act before the damage becomes irreversible.

Expressing concern over the continued use of such illegal nets despite existing regulations, Usman Majid said there should be a fair and transparent inquiry into whether any officials responsible for protecting Wular Lake have failed in their duties or, if evidence establishes it, have facilitated these activities. Anyone found guilty of negligence, collusion, or violating the law should face exemplary legal and departmental action without fear or favour.

"Wular Lake is the lifeline of Kashmir's fisheries. If we fail to protect its fish today, future generations will inherit an empty lake instead of a thriving ecosystem. This is not merely about fish production, it is about safeguarding our environment, our heritage, and the livelihood of thousands of hardworking families. The time for complacency has ended. What is needed now is immediate action, strict enforcement, and zero tolerance for those destroying the priceless aquatic wealth of Wular Lake," Majid said.

MLA Bandipora Reviews Development Works, Stresses Timely Public Service Delivery

Bandipora, August 1: Hon'ble Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Bandipora Constituency, Nizamuddin Bhat, on Saturday chaired a departmental review meeting at the Conference Hall, Mini Secretariat Bandipora to assess the progress of developmental works and public welfare initiatives in the constituency.

The Hon'ble MLA reviewed the department-wise progress of ICDS, Revenue, Health, Education, Social Welfare, Power Development Department (PDD), Sports Council, Youth Services & Sports, National Health Mission (NHM), AYUSH and other line departments.

The Hon’ble MLA reviewed the status of ongoing development projects, Constituency Development Fund (CDF) works, Tribal sector projects and the CAPEX Budget 2026-27, and sought status from the concerned departments regarding implementation of various schemes and projects.

Chief Planning Officer, Bandipora, delivered a detailed PowerPoint presentation highlighting the progress of schemes and projects under different sectors.

The meeting was attended by Assistant Commissioner Revenue Bandipora, Shabir Ahmad Wani; Programme Officer ICDS Bandipora, Yaar Ali Khan; Chief Planning Officer Bandipora; Chief Education Officer Bandipora; Chief Medical Officer Bandipora; District Social Welfare Officer Bandipora; MS DH Bandipora; Executive Engineers; Tehsildar Bandipora, besides other concerned officers.

During the meeting, the Hon'ble MLA directed the Programme Officer, ICDS Bandipora, to ensure that the vacant posts of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers are advertised and filled up at the earliest. He also directed that all essential facilities be ensured at Anganwadi Centres and that benefits under various welfare schemes reach the deserving beneficiaries effectively.

Reviewing the Health Department, the Hon'ble MLA directed that a special audit of District Hospital Bandipora and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) be conducted, including the National Health Mission (NHM) manpower engaged and the utilisation of funds under different components in District Hospital Bandipora.

The Hon'ble MLA urged the Assistant Commissioner Revenue Bandipora to ensure prompt public service delivery, particularly the issuance of Other Backward Class (OBC) certificates to eligible applicants within the stipulated timeframe.

The Hon’ble MLA also urged the Power Development Department to take necessary measures to reduce power curtailments and improve electricity supply for the convenience of the general public.

The Hon'ble MLA directed the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) Bandipora to obtain approval for the proposals related to the distribution of assistance under individual beneficiary schemes from the Hon'ble MLA, Bandipora.

The Hon'ble MLA directed the Youth Services & Sports Department and the Sports Council to take up the matter of the unsafe building at SK Sports Stadium with the R&B Department. The Executive Engineer, R&B Bandipora, was asked to furnish the necessary report for further process.

Th Hon'ble MLA urged all departments to furnish details of pending issues and projects requiring intervention at the level of the Heads of Departments, Administrative Departments, or the Government so that the same could be taken up by the Hon'ble MLA Bandipora with the concerned authorities.

The Hon'ble MLA emphasised coordinated efforts among all departments for timely completion of ongoing works, effective implementation of Government schemes and improved public service delivery, ensuring that the benefits of development reach every section of society.

Director Sainik Welfare J&K conducts Interactive Outreach Session for Ex-Servicemen in Gurez

Bandipora, August 01 : The Director, Sainik Welfare Department, Jammu & Kashmir, conducted an Ex-Servicemen (ESM) Outreach Programme on Saturday at the remote border area of Gurez in Bandipora district.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from Ex-Servicemen and widows of Ex-Servicemen.

Addressing the gathering, the Director highlighted the Department's three key focus areas viz. healthcare and medical initiatives for Ex-Servicemen, employment and self-employment opportunities for Ex-Servicemen and their wards, and educational incentives for the children of Ex-Servicemen.

He urged eligible Ex-Servicemen aspiring to secure Government jobs under the 6% reservation quota for Ex-Servicemen in Jammu & Kashmir to prepare themselves adequately and obtain the required qualifying marks to improve their chances of selection.

Encouraging entrepreneurship, the Director advised Ex-Servicemen interested in self-employment to approach the Department for guidance on various Government schemes and skill development programmes. He particularly encouraged them to explore opportunities in agriculture and tourism sectors with significant growth potential in the Gurez region.

The Director informed the participants that the Department will be proposing several new welfare initiatives during the forthcoming meeting of the State Managing Committee on the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund. The proposed initiatives are aimed at strengthening medical assistance, re-employment support, self-employment promotion, and educational incentives for the Ex-Servicemen community and their dependents.

He also apprised the gathering that the Department is actively pursuing the establishment of a Zila Sainik Welfare Office (ZSWO) at Bandipora to improve accessibility of welfare services for Ex-Servicemen residing in the district.

During the interaction, the Director patiently listened to the issues and suggestions raised by the participants and assured them that the Department would examine their concerns and take appropriate action wherever feasible.

Highlighting the Department's efforts to improve outreach, the Director announced the launch of an E-Outreach Initiative to complement the existing physical outreach programmes conducted by Zila Sainik Welfare Offices. He directed the ZSWO Baramulla, who is also responsible for Gurez, to conduct an online outreach session once every fortnight and urged Ex-Servicemen from the area to actively participate in these virtual interactions.

The Director also appealed to the Ex-Servicemen community to actively support the Plastic-Free Gurez campaign launched by the District Administration. He observed that maintaining a clean and plastic-free Gurez would enhance the region's appeal as a tourist destination, thereby contributing to the growth of the local economy and creating additional livelihood opportunities for residents.

The outreach programme concluded reaffirming the Department's commitment to strengthening its engagement with the Ex-Servicemen fraternity, particularly those residing in remote and border areas of Jammu & Kashmir.
