Illegal Poppy Cultivation Destroyed in Sumbal

Sumbal, May 11: In a continued crackdown against narcotics cultivation under the ongoing “Nasha Mukt Abhiyan,” a joint team of Police, Revenue, Agriculture and Excise departments on Monday destroyed illegally cultivated poppy crops in the Sarie Dangerpora area of Sumbal in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
Officials said the operation was launched following inputs about the illegal cultivation of poppy in the area. During the drive, the team identified the contraband crop spread over a patch of land and destroyed it on the spot as per legal procedures.
In this connection, Police Station Sumbal registered a case vide FIR No. 103/2026 under Sections 8/18 of the NDPS Act.
Police said further investigation has been initiated to identify the persons involved and to ascertain the full extent of the illegal cultivation.
The authorities reiterated their commitment to continue strict action against drug-related activities as part of the ongoing anti-drug campaign across the district.

Bandipora Police Attaches Property of Drug Peddler in Ajas

Bandipora: Continuing its crackdown against drug trafficking under the Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan, Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday attached immovable property of an alleged drug peddler in Ajas area of Bandipora district under provisions of the NDPS Act.
Police said the attached property, valued at around ₹20 lakh, belongs to Mushtaq Ahmad Rather, son of Late Abdul Kalam Rather, a resident of Rather Mohalla Ajas, who is involved in FIR No. 103/2023 registered under Sections 8/21 of the NDPS Act at Police Post Ajas.
The property was attached under Section 68-F of the NDPS Act after investigations revealed that it had allegedly been acquired through proceeds generated from illicit drug trafficking activities, police said.
Officials said the move is part of the ongoing drive to dismantle the financial networks of drug peddlers and to ensure strict action against those involved in narcotics trade.

Bandipora Police reiterated its commitment to continue its campaign against drug menace and appealed to the public to cooperate with police in making Jammu and Kashmir drug-free.

JKFA Stakeholders Demand Withdrawal of Court Cases, Seek Early Elections
Sopore, May 10: A crucial meeting of stakeholders of the Jammu and Kashmir Football Association (JKFA) was held in Sopore on Sunday, with representatives from almost all District Football Associations (DFAs) and Zonal Football Associations (ZFAs) of Kashmir Valley participating.
The meeting was convened to discuss measures for removing hurdles in the smooth functioning of JKFA and ensuring the conduct of the long-awaited elections in a transparent and democratic manner.
During the meeting, elected representatives of various DFAs and ZFAs expressed serious concern over the delay in football activities and JKFA elections, alleging that certain individuals had stalled the process by filing multiple court cases.
The participants unanimously demanded immediate withdrawal of all such cases in the larger interest of football in Jammu and Kashmir and set a deadline of 10 to 15 days for the concerned persons to withdraw the cases to allow the election process to move forward without further delay.
The stakeholders also appealed to the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to send observers for the forthcoming JKFA elections to ensure complete transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
A Coordination Committee comprising senior football representatives was constituted to oversee matters related to elections and football activities. The committee will be headed by Gulzar Ahmad (President, DFA Zone Pattan), Mohammad Amin Malik (President, DFA Anantnag), Noor Mohammad (Secretary, DFA Zone Sopore), Firdous Ahmad (President, DFA Zone Handwara), Irshad Ahmad (President, DFA Bandipora) and Asim Aijaz (President, DFA Zone Sonawari), who will also serve as Media and Communications Incharge.
The meeting reiterated the stakeholders’ commitment to conduct elections on the principle of “One Vote, One Club” in a free, fair and democratic atmosphere.
A separate committee was also formed to coordinate with the AIFF regarding alignment of the JKFA Constitution with the AIFF Constitution, National Sports Code and guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court of India.
The stakeholders reaffirmed their collective resolve for the revival, development and democratic functioning of football in Jammu and Kashmir.
Among those present were Altaf Ahmad (President, DFA Baramulla), Abdul Qayoum (President, DFA Ganderbal), Imtiyaz Ahmad (President, DFA Kupwara), Sajad Ahmad (Treasurer, DFA Kulgam), Yawar Ahmad (Secretary, DFA Zone Rafiabad), John Mohammad (Secretary, DFA Zone Pattan), Farooq Ahmad (Secretary, DFA Zone Bandipora), Sameer-ul-Haq (Secretary, DFA Zone Pampore), Basharat Ahmad (Treasurer, DFA Zone Pampore), besides several other representatives from across Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting also resolved to approach and support stakeholders from Jammu division, stating that they too were facing difficulties due to interference by non-footballing elements and third parties in football affairs.

Army Assists in Rescue After School Bus Skids Into Nala at Manasbal

Manasbal: A potential tragedy was averted on Friday after the Indian Army swiftly rescued students and staff members of a Srinagar-based special school when their picnic bus skidded into a nala at Jharoka Bagh in Manasbal area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
Officials said the bus, belonging to Shafaqat Special School Bemina, Srinagar, was carrying students and staff for a picnic outing when the vehicle lost control at around 11:30 am and skidded into a nearby nala.
Soon after the incident, troops from Manasbal RR Battalion Army Camp rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. Army personnel safely evacuated all the students and staff members from the bus and provided immediate assistance on the spot.
The stranded vehicle was later recovered with the help of Army troops and locals. Officials said the timely response by the Army helped prevent any major injury or untoward incident.
The swift action of the troops was appreciated by the school authorities, parents and local residents, who thanked the Army for its humanitarian assistance and prompt response during the emergency.

General Public, Political Leaders Laud SHO Hajin for Professional Handling of Jhelum Rescue Operation

Hajin: General public, political leaders and the families affected by the tragic drowning incident in River Jhelum at Hajin on Saturday commended SHO Hajin Mir Saleem Ahmad and his entire police team for their professional conduct and dedicated efforts during the rescue operation in which three youths lost their lives.

Locals said that despite the highly emotional atmosphere and presence of a huge crowd on the river banks, SHO Hajin handled the situation with calmness and professionalism while ensuring that law and order was maintained throughout the operation.

They said the officer remained present on the ground from the very beginning and coordinated effectively with senior police officers, rescue teams and Army personnel, which helped in carrying out the operation smoothly and without any disruption.

Political leaders also appreciated the prompt response of SHO Hajin, his team stating that proper crowd management and timely coordination by the SHO allowed rescuers to continue their work without interference, leading to the recovery of all the bodies within a few hours.

The bereaved families too expressed gratitude to the police officials and rescue teams for standing by them during the difficult time and assisting in every possible manner.

Locals said similar incidents had taken place in the past as well, but the way SHO Mir Saleem Ahmad controlled the crowd and prevented people from creating hurdles during the rescue operation was highly commendable.

“Usually people gather near the spot and disturb rescue teams, but this time the police kept everyone calm and ensured that no untoward incident occurred during the operation,” the locals said.

They further said that maintaining control over the emotionally charged crowd played a key role in the timely retrieval of the bodies from the river and praised the SHO Mir Saleem along with his entire team for their sincere efforts.

Locals Laud Hajin Police for Swift Rescue Operation

Hajin: Residents of Hajin and adjoining areas on Friday expressed heartfelt gratitude to the SHO Hajin and other his staff, rescue teams and local volunteers for their relentless efforts during the rescue operation in which the bodies of three persons were retrieved from the river Jehlum after strenuous searches.
Locals particularly appreciated the role of SHO Hajin, Inspector Mir Saleem, for remaining at the forefront throughout the operation and ensuring that law and order was maintained at the site. Eyewitnesses said the SHO kept mourners and onlookers calm on the banks, preventing any untoward incident and allowing rescuers to carry out the operation without disturbance.
“It was because of the efforts of the local police,staff from Bandipora especially led by SHO Hajin Mir Saleem, that people remained calm and the rescue teams could continue the searches smoothly,” said Abdul Rashid, a local resident. He added that the SHO remained continuously present at the spot till all the bodies were recovered and also guided locals during the rescue operation.
Meanwhile, senior Apni Party leader Imtiyaz Parray, while speaking to media persons, praised the efforts of SSP Bandipora Aijaz Ahmad, SHO Hajin Inspector Mir Saleem, Army personnel and local volunteers who participated in the operation.
“No amount of praise is enough for the SSP Bandipora, SHO Hajin, the Army and particularly the brave local volunteers who assisted in the operation,” Parray said. He termed the role of the local police in maintaining order and coordinating the operation as “highly commendable,” adding that their efforts helped rescuers retrieve the bodies successfully.
Locals also expressed gratitude to SSP Bandipora Aijaz Ahmad for personally visiting the site and closely monitoring the rescue operation till its culmination.
