After Decade-Long Wait, Lower Rajwar Water Supply Project Nears Completion; 25,000 Residents Across 13 Villages to Benefit

Handwara, Aug 5: Bringing relief to thousands of residents after nearly a decade of delay, the much-awaited Lower Rajwar Raw Water Main Project in Handwara is in its final stage, with testing currently underway. Officials said the project is expected to be commissioned later this week.

The project, executed by the PHE Division Handwara/Baramulla, Aijaz Ahmad involves the laying of a 9-kilometre-long, 200 mm diameter Ductile Iron (DI) Raw Water Main, connecting the source to the filtration plant and service reservoir.
Once commissioned, the scheme will provide an improved drinking water supply to nearly 25,000 people across 13 villages, including Dudipora, Bakiakher, Baderher, Budkot, Machipora, Khirman, Nabedzab, Nagranar, Baderkali, Bahadarpora, Goriakher, Wadipora and Lachipora.

Official told that project has reached its final testing phase and will soon be made operational, significantly improving water supply in the Rajwar area.

Local resident Ghulam Hassan expressed happiness over the development, saying the project had remained pending for nearly 10 years.

"We are very happy that this long-pending project is finally becoming a reality. Since Executive Engineer Aijaz Ahmad took charge, the work has gained momentum and has now reached completion. It is a huge relief for the people of Rajwar," he said.

Another resident, Gowhar Ahmad, appreciated the progress and urged the authorities to expedite other pending drinking water schemes in the area.

"We appeal to Executive Engineer Aijaz Ahmad to ensure that the remaining water supply projects are also completed at the earliest so that more villages can benefit from reliable drinking water facilities," he said.

The commissioning of the Lower Rajwar Water Supply Project is expected to address a long-standing drinking water shortage in the region and significantly improve access to safe and dependable water for thousands of residents.

PM gifted us lasting peace & freedom from continued bloodshed : Dr Darakhshan

After participating in the Bhartiya Janata Party event to celebrate the August 05 complete merger day at Srinagar, Chairperson of the J&K Waqf Board Dr Syed Darakhshan Andrabi today spoke to media and said that in the garb of Special Status, local political parties promoted separatism and unrest fordecades in J&K, and the constitutional changes of 05 August 2019, paved way for lasting peace & the freedom from a long spell of bloodshed inJ&K. "These political parties are responsible for the killing of thousands of innocents who lost their lives because of their politics of exploitation and division. Now after the abrogation of 370, we got freedom from violence and bloodshed. We are now on the path of peace and development in J&K", said Dr Darakhshan. In reply to a question about the demand for the restoration of Special status by the local political parties, Dr Andrabi said that the Parliament of our great nation took the decision and it was irreversible. "Fooling people by playing old records will yield no results. J&K doesn't deserve to be dragged to the separatist outlook. Every citizen of J&K is a proud Indian having equal rights and opportunities in this great growing nation", said Andrabi. She thanked the Prime Minister for fulfilling his promise to the people of J&K about the restoration of lasting peace and the era of development and growth.

Baramulla Police Tighten Noose on Illegal Mining; Illegally Dumped Minerals Seized at Babagund Pattan

Baramulla | August 05, 2026

Continuing its sustained drive against illegal mining, Baramulla Police, in coordination with the Geology & Mining Department, took action against the illegal extraction and dumping of minerals at Babagund Pattan.

Acting on specific information, Police Station received information regarding the illegal dumping of minerals extracted from Babagund Nallah by two locals, namely Jahangir Ahmad Khan S/o Mohd Maqbool Khan and Shabir Ahmad Khan S/o Farooq Ahmad Khan, both residents of Babagund.

Accordingly, a police party, along with officials of the Geology & Mining Department, rushed to the spot. During the inspection, illegally dumped boulders and gravel were seized. The Geology & Mining Department imposed a fine of ₹73,693/- (Rupees Seventy-Three Thousand Six Hundred Ninety-Three only) under the provisions of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act (MMDR Act) against the violators.

Baramulla Police remain committed to protecting natural resources and taking stringent action against those involved in illegal mining. The public is urged to report any such unlawful activities to the nearest police station to help safeguard the environment and ensure strict enforcement of the law.
