Langate,Jul,17:The Area Marketing Office Kupwara of the Department of Horticulture Planning and Marketing on Thursday organized a day-long awareness camp on the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme at Town Hall Langate in district Kupwara.

The camp was aimed at spreading awareness among stakeholders about the objectives, scope, and benefits of the PMFME scheme, which is a Government of India initiative to strengthen the unorganised micro food processing sector and promote formalisation, competitiveness, and sustainability of local enterprises.

Representatives from various allied departments including Horticulture, Agriculture, Animal and Sheep Husbandry, Fisheries, and the District Resource Person (DRP) of the PMFME scheme participated in the event. The officers provided comprehensive information about the scheme’s provisions related to financial support, skill development, infrastructure assistance, and entrepreneurship training for new and existing micro food processing units.

More than 100 participants, including young farmers, aspiring entrepreneurs, and existing food processing unit holders from across the Langate constituency, attended the camp and engaged in interactive sessions with the officials.

Speaking on the occasion, officers from the Department of Horticulture Planning and Marketing, along with the District Officer Animal Husbandry and other departmental heads, emphasized the potential of the PMFME scheme to enhance rural livelihoods, empower local entrepreneurs, and improve food processing capabilities at the grassroots level.

The camp concluded with a call for youth and farmers to avail the benefits of the scheme and contribute to the growth of the agro-based economy in all over district especially in the Langate area.

Pensioners, CSF Kupwara Demand Reopening of Payment Counter at Old JK Bank Handwara Branch

DR.AB QAYOOM

Handwara, July 16: The Civil Society Forum Kupwara (CSFK), along with a large number of senior citizens and pensioners, has raised strong concerns over the ongoing neglect of pension-related services at the Old Branch of Jammu and Kashmir Bank in Handwara. In a statement, the Forum demanded the immediate reopening of the payment counter dedicated to pensioners, terming the current situation as unacceptable and disrespectful to those who have spent a lifetime in public service.

Despite the smooth functioning of services like electricity and water bill payments, and school fee submissions at the branch, pensioners say they are often made to wait endlessly or turned away without any resolution to their issues.

“We see staff handling other counters efficiently, but when it comes to pension disbursal, the response is either to wait endlessly or return another day,” said an elderly visitor visibly distressed by the situation.

Adding to the hardship is the structural inaccessibility of the building, which lacks adequate facilities for the elderly. Many retirees, already in fragile health, are unable to climb to the upper floors. “It’s humiliating and painful. We cannot be expected to walk up stairs at this age,” lamented another senior citizen.

Abdul Ahad, a prominent member of CSFK, highlighted the urgent need for a dedicated pension counter and staff trained to deal empathetically with elderly citizens. “This is not just a matter of service delivery but one of dignity and respect,” he said.

Malik Ghulam Hassan, President of Civil Society Forum Kupwara, issued a strong statement condemning the indifference shown by the authorities. “This is administrative apathy at its worst. We demand immediate intervention from the J&K Bank management and the district administration of Kupwara. Senior citizens must not be forced to suffer for basic services they rightfully deserve.”

The Forum urged the authorities to ensure that the Old Branch of JK Bank Handwara reopens the pension counter with immediate effect and provides necessary assistance to the elderly, ensuring their needs are addressed with dignity and care.
