Zahoor Ahmad Bhat, JDU Chief Spokesperson, Joins People's Conference Along with Supporters

Srinagar, 11 Oct:- Zahoor Ahmad Bhat, former Chief Party Spokesperson of Janata Dal (United) [JDU], joined the People's Conference (PC) along with his supporters at the party's head office Srinagar on Sunday.

The joining ceremony was attended by People's Conference President Sajad Ganie and Sheikh Imran, who welcomed Zahoor Ahmad Bhat and his supporters into the party fold. They expressed confidence that the new entrants would contribute to strengthening the party's organisational structure at the grassroots level across Bandipora district.

The prominent leaders and workers who joined the People's Conference included Zahoor Ahmad Bhat, former Chief Party Spokesperson of JDU; Mohd Altaf Parray, Tehsil President, Hajin; Javid Ahmad Wani, District General Secretary, Bandipora; Ghulam Ahmad Dar of Ajas, District Vice President; Mohd Ishaq, Block President, Ganastan Sumbal; Gulzar Ahmad Dar, Tehsil Vice President; and Amir Mohideen, Halqa President.

Several other supporters also joined the party on the occasion.

The induction of Zahoor Ahmad Bhat and his supporters marks a new political development for the group in Bandipora district. The People's Conference leadership welcomed the new members and expressed hope that their participation would help expand the party's organisational presence and strengthen its engagement with people at the grassroots level.

Mehbooba warns against commercial high-rises on J&K's agricultural land

PDP chief flags seismic, liquefaction risks; questions impact on food security, public safety

Srinagar, Oct 11: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday raised concerns over the opening up of agricultural land and orchards in Jammu and Kashmir for commercial high-rise construction, warning that such development could threaten food security and expose people to serious seismic risks.

In a post on X, the former chief minister questioned the government's development approach, alleging that agricultural and horticultural land was being made available for commercial construction despite warnings about earthquake-related hazards.

“In the name of development, J&K’s orchards and agricultural land are being opened up for commercial high rises, even as experts warn of catastrophic seismic and liquefaction risks,” Mehbooba said.

She described the alleged changes as a threat not only to the region's agricultural resources but also to the safety of people living in areas vulnerable to natural disasters.

“This is not development. It is a dangerous betrayal of our land, our food security and our people’s lives,” she said.

The PDP president also questioned accountability in the event of a disaster arising from construction in vulnerable areas.

“Who will take responsibility when this reckless experiment turns into a disaster?” she asked.

Her remarks come amid criticism of changes to building and land-use regulations in Jammu and Kashmir, with opposition leaders questioning their implications for urban planning, agricultural land protection and environmental safety.

However, Mehbooba did not identify specific projects or provide details of the expert assessments referred to in her post. Her claims regarding the extent of land opened for commercial construction remain unverified.

“Whose Clock Should School Bell Follow?"; IAS Officer Shahid Choudhary Calls for Review of School Timings in Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct 11: IAS officer from Jammu and Kashmir, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, has called for a serious review of school timings in Srinagar amid colder mornings and shorter days, emphasising the need to prioritise children’s sleep, physical activity and mental wellbeing.

In a post on his Facebook timeline, as per news agency JKNS, Choudhary questioned whether existing school schedules adequately account for the entire day of young children, including early departures from home and delays in returning after school.

“For younger children, the real school day begins at home, not at the school gate. Are we assessing that entire day, or only the hours printed on the timetable?” he wrote.

Referring to sleep requirements for children aged 6–12 years, Choudhary cited recommendations of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, which suggest 9–12 hours of sleep for this age group. He also noted that research indicates even modest sleep loss can affect children’s alertness and emotional regulation.

He stressed that discipline should strengthen a child’s capacity to learn rather than be confused with endurance, adding that science may not prescribe one perfect timetable but provides reasons to question routines that compromise sleep and recovery.

Choudhary called for schools and parents in Srinagar to jointly review seasonal timings, age-appropriate school hours, transportation arrangements and dispersal delays.

He further observed that merely delaying the school start time without considering the time children return home would not offer a complete solution, emphasising the need to maintain a balance throughout the day.

Highlighting the importance of child-centred education, he said children’s readiness to learn and overall wellbeing should guide decisions on school schedules rather than the convenience of established routines.

Choudhary suggested that a school schedule from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM deserved serious consideration, balancing focused learning with adequate sleep, physical activity and mental wellbeing. (JKNS)
