Gvn..2 Killed, Four Injured In Handwara Road Accident
Handwara, Oct 11: Two persons died on the spot after an Alto car collided with a bike at Nelipora Magam area of Handwara in north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Sunday evening.
A police official told GNS that an Alto vehicle bearing registration No. JK05A-9562 collided head-on with a motorcycle bearing registration No. JK09E-8313 at Nelipora Magam, resulting in the on-spot death of two persons, reportedly the bike riders and four others injured.
The deceased have been identified as Tahir Ahmad and Mohammad Aamir, both residents of Salkoot, Kupwara.
The injured have been shifted to GMC Handwara for treatment.

Gvn...Massive Blaze Renders Several Families Homeless In Koot Verinag, Locals Demand Fire Station
Srinagar, Oct 11 : With several residential houses were reduced to ashes in a devastating fire incident in Koot area of Shahabad Bala, Verinag in South Kashmir's Anantnag district on Sunday, leaving several families under open sky.
Officials told GNS that fire broke out from one house in Koot and quickly spread to adjacent houses due to congested accommodation. In the incident, five houses were completely gutted, with all household belongings and property worth lakhs destroyed.
Locals said that despite hectic efforts, the fire could not be controlled in time due to absence of a Fire & Emergency Services station in the area. By the time fire tenders reached from Dooru and Anantnag, everything had been turned into ashes.
For the affected families, years of hard work, savings and memories were lost within minutes, and they have been left with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.
Meanwhile, locals once again reiterated their long-pending demand for establishment of a Fire & Emergency Unit at Shahabad Bala Verinag, stating that had there been a fire station nearby, the loss could have been minimized.
The affected families have appealed to district administration Anantnag for immediate relief, rehabilitation and compensation.
Fire is suspected to have been caused by short-circuit, however officials said cause is being ascertained. No loss of life was reported in the incident.(GNS)

Gvn...Woman jumps from window to escape Noorbagh blaze, dies
Srinagar, Oct 11: A woman died after jumping from a window of a three-storey residential house while trying to escape a fire in the Jehangir Mohalla area of Noorbagh in Srinagar on Sunday, officials said.
An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the woman was on the third floor of her residential house when the fire broke out.
He said she jumped from the window to escape the blaze and sustained serious injuries. She was shifted to SHMS Hospital and was later identified as Haleema Sheikh, wife of Gulzar Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Noorbagh, Srinagar.
A hospital official confirmed to KNO that the woman was admitted to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
Meanwhile, an investigation has been initiated, while the cause of the fire is being ascertained.—(KNO)

SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 10: Chief Engineer, Distribution, KPDCL has informed that the Shutdown of 33 kV Budgam line will be observed due to which power supply to Ompora, SIDCO, Housing Colony, Railway Station Budgam, NIFT and adjoining areas will be affected from 09 AM to 03 PM on 15 October 2026.
Similarly, shutdown of 33 kV Wanpoh-Ashajipora Malaknag DC line will be observed due to which power supply to Ashajipora, Dialgam, Rohu, Malaknag, Reshibazar, Janglat Mandi, Shirpora, Nowgam and adjoining areas will be affected from 10 AM to 03 PM on 14, 17 & 22 October 2026.
Likewise, shutdown of 33 kV Pampore-BK Pora line will be observed due to which power supply to BK Pora, Aribagh, Kenihama, Checkpora, Chattergam, Kultrah and adjoining areas will be affected from 09 AM to 03 PM on 13 & 15 October 2026.
Similarly, shutdown of 33 kV Shariefabad Narbal line will be observed due to which power supply to Narbal, Kawoosa, Mazhama, Lawaypora, Railway Station Mazhama, Sanoor, Radbugh, Malpora and adjoining areas will be affected from 09 AM to 03 PM on 12 October 2026.
Likewise, shutdown of 33 kV Uri line will be observed due to which power supply to Salamabad, NPHC, MES, Garkote, Balkote, Bandi, Garkote, Uri, Mohura, Rampur, Bani, Bijhama, Dhani and adjoining areas will be affected from 09 AM to 03 PM on 15, 17, 19, 21,23 & 25 October 2026.
Similarly, shutdown of 33 kV Mattan Pahalgam line will be observed due Hutmurrah, Salia, Aishmuqam, Batkoot, Sallar, Pahalgam AIS & GIS and District Jail will be observed due to which power supply to Hutmurrah, Seer, Akad, Salia, Aishmuqam, Batkoot, Pahalgam, Sallar, Aru and adjoining areas will be affected from 10 AM to 03 PM on 13 & 17 October.

Says critical thinking, digital literacy and shared responsibility must be integral to learning
NEW DELHI, OCTOBER 10: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today called for a future-ready education system that prepares children for life beyond examinations, equipping them with critical thinking, digital literacy, adaptability and a strong sense of responsibility.
The Chief Minister was addressing the School Leader of the Year 2026 Summit & Awards in New Delhi, which brought together leading educators, school principals and institutional heads to celebrate excellence, innovation and leadership in K-12 education.
Emphasising the role of school leaders in nation-building, Omar Abdullah said principals and headteachers do much more than administer schools. They shape the learning environment, values, aspirations and future of young minds. Strong leadership, he said, is fundamental to building safe, inclusive, innovative and student-centric institutions.
The Chief Minister underscored that education must focus on the holistic development of every child, going beyond academic achievement to nurture creativity, communication, collaboration, problem-solving abilities and digital competence. He stressed that schools must prepare students to meet emerging challenges with confidence and responsibility.
Highlighting the opportunities presented by technology and Artificial Intelligence, the Chief Minister emphasised the need to adopt these tools responsibly to improve learning outcomes, personalise education and support teachers, while ensuring that technology complements rather than replaces the human element of education.
He also stressed the importance of continuous professional development for teachers and school leaders, noting that exposure to innovative teaching methods, exchange of best practices and opportunities for collaboration are essential to strengthening educational institutions.
Omar Abdullah called for an inclusive approach to educational excellence, emphasising that quality education must reach children in rural, remote and underserved communities as well as those in urban areas. He said governments, educators, institutions, parents and communities must work collectively to address the diverse academic, social and developmental needs of children.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of meaningful collaboration among educational institutions, both within India and internationally, to promote innovation, share successful models and strengthen the quality of education.
He observed that recognition of exemplary school leadership helps foster a culture of excellence, encouraging other institutions to learn from successful practices and adapt them to their own contexts.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister felicitated the heads of several educational institutions in recognition of their contributions.
Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology’s Achyuta Samanta; Executive Chairman, Association of Indian Principals, (AIP), Dalip Sharma; CTO, AIP and CEO, City Innovates Kashish Jhamb and Managing Director, Macmillan Education India, Rajesh Pasari, were among those present. Chancellors and senior officials from Indian and international universities, officials from Austrade, school founders, directors, principals and heads of schools from across the country also attended the summit.

Gvn...CAT Srinagar Directs Govt to Decide on Regularisation of 12 Rehbar-e-Janglaat Employees
Srinagar: The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), Srinagar, has directed the Jammu and Kashmir Government to consider the regularisation cases of 12 Rehbar-e-Janglaat employees and take a decision in accordance with the applicable rules and policy.
The tribunal noted that the 2017 policy provides for regularisation after five years of satisfactory and continuous service. The Government had created 333 additional posts in 2017, while 234 supernumerary posts were adjusted against vacancies in 2021.
CAT has also directed the Government to examine the applicability of the cited Supreme Court judgment and extend its benefit to the employees, if applicable and if no legal impediment exists.
The tribunal has asked the authorities to pass a speaking and reasoned order, clearly explaining the decision taken. The decision should preferably be made within eight weeks of receiving the certified copy of the order

Gvn...Huge Arms Cache Recovered In Sopore Forests, Arms Including AKs, Pistols, MGL, 11 Gr***des & 3 IEDs Seized
Sopore, Oct 10 : In a major breakthrough, Sopore Police recovered a huge cache of arms, am******on and explosives from the forest area of Mukaam Cherhar under the jurisdiction of Police Station Bomai.
In a handout to GNS, the police said acting on specific intelligence inputs generated by Sopore Police, a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched in the forest area.
During searches, a blue coloured barrel and a bag were found concealed beneath a large boulder. The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was immediately called to the spot for examination and safe handling of the suspected explosive material.
During thorough searches, police recovered 02 assault ri**es — including 01 AK-47 and 01 AK-76 — along with 07 magazines, 04 pistols with 04 magazines, a Multi Gr***de Launcher (MGL) with 05 rounds, 11 hand grenades, 03 IEDs with remote controls, 08 detonators and 02 timers.
Other incriminating material including a Y-SMS set, prima cords, wires, battery cells, IED-related components and miscellaneous accessories were also seized from the spot.
The recovered arms and explosives were taken into possession after following due legal procedure and observing necessary safety precautions.
In this connection, FIR No. 66/2026 under Sections 13, 18, 20 and 23 of UAPA, 7/25 Arms Act and 5 Explosive Substances Act has been registered at Police Station Bomai and further investigation has been taken up.
Police said the recovery is a significant achievement in ongoing counter-terrorism efforts. Investigation is underway to establish the source, ownership and those involved in concealment of the cache and to ascertain possible terror linkages.(GNS)

Gvn...Tata Mobile Rolls Down At Shiendra Top Surankote; 3 Injured, 2 Critical
Poonch, Oct 10 : Three persons were injured, two of them critically, after a Tata Mobile load carrier rolled down at Shiendra Top in Surankote area of Poonch district on Saturday.
Officials told GNS that a Tata Mobile bearing registration details not immediately known rolled down at Shiendra Top, resulting in injuries to three persons on board.
The injured have been identified as Bilal Ahmed S/o Late Sajad Ahmed R/o Shiendara, Imran Ahmed S/o Mohd Ishaq and Faizan Ahmed S/o Mohd Ishaq R/o Shiendara.
All the injured were immediately rushed to District Hospital Poonch, where condition of two is stated to be serious while one is stable.
Police have taken cognizance of the incident.(GNS)
