Kashmir is world famous for its handcrafts. Whether it is paper mache or embroidery designs, every kashmiri art has its unique identity. Among these handicrafts , Kashmiri Shawls and hand woven carpets are exceptional. Making of shawls and carpets involves an important component - Talim.
First a designer called the Naqash makes the design using pencils on graphs . Then a coder called the talim guru encodes that design in a specific notation called talim by making the colour codes and symbols for weft yarns that would interlace the warp to construct the desired design. He writes on a long strip of paper, in specific symbols, the colour codes, and the number of knots to be woven with each colour. And finally this Talim is read, decoded, interpreted and communicated by weavers (kaalbaaf) in an equally cryptic trade-language among their teams to weave the designs. fans
