Congress Holds Press Conference on “MGNREGA Bachao Sangram” and “Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq”
Bandipora: Acting on the directions of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and in accordance with the directives of Shri Tariq Hameed Karra, Hon’ble President, Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), the District Congress Committee (DCC) Bandipora today organized a press conference on the themes “MGNREGA Bachao Sangram” and “Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq.”
The press conference was led by JKPCC District President Adv. Sheikh Farooq and was held in the presence of party observers Bilal Ashiq Mir and Irshad Ahmad Badoo, along with senior party leaders and dedicated workers of the Indian National Congress.
Addressing the media, the Congress Party strongly condemned the systematic weakening of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) by the present regime. The speakers expressed grave concern over deliberate attempts to dilute the Act through delayed wage payments, reduction in guaranteed workdays, weakening of implementation mechanisms, and reported efforts to remove the name of Mahatma Gandhi from the scheme—terming these moves as a direct assault on the rights, dignity, and livelihood of rural workers.
The leaders reiterated that MGNREGA is a lifeline for millions of rural households, particularly in economically backward and rural regions. Any attempt to undermine or dismantle this historic legislation is unacceptable and anti-poor. The Congress Party demanded the immediate and complete restoration of MGNREGA in its original spirit and strength.
Key Demands Raised During the Press Conference:
Right to Work
Right to Timely Wages
Right to Accountability
Immediate restoration of MGNREGA
Implementation of an All-India minimum wage of ₹400 per day
The District Congress Committee Bandipora reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the constitutional, democratic, and economic rights of the people. The party vowed to intensify its struggle both on the ground and at every democratic forum until justice is delivered to rural workers and the common masses.

2 years after Gandbal boat tragedy, locals spot human foot

Srinagar, Jan 11: Nearly two years after the Gandbal Srinagar boat tragedy that claimed eight lives, hope has resurfaced in the grief-stricken community after locals spotted what appeared to be ‘a human foot emerging from sand near the Jhelum riverbank’ on Sunday.

The discovery was made by residents engaged in sand collection along the river, prompting immediate alert to local authorities.

Eyewitnesses told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that they noticed something resembling a human foot while clearing the sand. “It looked old and partially decomposed, said a villager from Gandbal. “We informed the police right away.”

Officials are yet to confirm the origin of the remains, while teams of police have arrived at the spot.

Notably, the speculation runs deep in the area, that they may belong to Showkat Ahmad Sheikh, the 40-year-old mason who went missing when the boat capsized on April 16, 2024. Earlier, despite massive rescue operations by SDRF, NDRF and MARCOs, Showkat’s body was never found.

Meanwhile further details are awaited as the search for full body remain on—(KNO)
