Kupwara Electrical Contractors Threaten Boycott Over ₹850 Crore Pending Liabilities

DR.AB QAYOOM

Kupwara, Feb,16:The Electrical Association Kupwara has sounded the alarm over an alarming financial crisis stemming from the prolonged delay in clearing pending liabilities of electrical contractors, which have accumulated to a staggering ₹850 crores. The Association has warned that if the payments are not released immediately, contractors will be forced to halt all ongoing and future electrical works in the district.

In a statement issued to HEADLINES TODAY, the Association emphasized that despite completing their contractual obligations, contractors have not received their dues for several months. The payment files, pending in various treasuries for over four months, show no indication of clearance, raising serious concerns over their fate. The contractors fear that if these funds are not released before March, they will lapse, further exacerbating their financial distress.

The delay in payments has left contractors struggling to sustain their businesses, pushing them to the brink of financial collapse. Many of them have invested heavily in electrical projects, expecting timely payments, but the ongoing crisis has placed them in severe economic distress.

"The delay in payments has put our members under immense financial pressure. With mounting debts and no source of income, many contractors are unable to even pay their workers. If the pending liabilities are not cleared immediately, we will have no choice but to boycott all electrical works in Kupwara," the Association stated.

The Association has urged the concerned authorities, including the district administration and treasury officials, to expedite the release of funds. They warned that any further delay would not only impact the contractors but also disrupt essential electrical services in the region.

"If these payments are not made in time, key government projects will be stalled, and the general public will suffer. We urge the authorities to take immediate action before the situation spirals out of control," the statement added.

With no positive response from the authorities so far, the Electrical Association Kupwara has made it clear that they will not hesitate to take drastic measures if their demands are ignored. The planned boycott of electrical works in the district could delay ongoing projects, disrupt power infrastructure upgrades, and even affect rural electrification programs.

The contractors remain hopeful that prompt government intervention will prevent further hardship and ensure the smooth ex*****on of vital electrical projects in the district. However, if their demands are not met soon, Kupwara could be on the brink of an electrical crisis.

NLP Spokesperson Yaqoob Dunoo Slams NC MLA's Liquor Ban Concerns, Cites Religious and Cultural Impact

QAUMI TIMES

Srinagar, A heated debate has erupted over the proposed liquor ban in Jammu and Kashmir, with National Loktantrik Party (NLP) spokesperson Mohammad Yaqoob Dunoo sharply criticizing National Conference (NC) MLA Zadibal, Tanveer Sadiq, for his remarks regarding its potential impact on tourism.

Tanveer Sadiq warned that a complete prohibition could negatively affect the region’s tourism-dependent economy, emphasizing the need for careful consideration. "Jammu and Kashmir relies heavily on tourism, and we must evaluate how such a move would impact visitors. Even many Arab countries have regulated alcohol systems," he stated.

NLP Chief Spokesperson Mohammad Yaqoob Dunoo strongly rejected this argument, citing a famous poetic verse: "Kabba kis muh se jaoge Ghalib, sharam tumko magar nahi aati" (How will you face the Kaaba, Ghalib, when you have no shame?). He asserted that alcohol is strictly forbidden in Islam and emphasized the need to protect Kashmir’s religious and cultural identity. "With nearly 80% of Kashmir’s population being Muslim, we strongly demand a complete ban on liquor in the Valley," he declared.

Questioning Sadiq’s reasoning, Dunoo stated, "If alcohol is banned in Gujarat because Mahatma Gandhi was born there, how can it be justified in Kashmir, the land of Sufis and Rishis? We completely oppose its presence here."

He dismissed the argument that a ban would harm tourism, stating, "Tourists visit Kashmir for its breathtaking beauty, warm hospitality, mesmerizing snow-covered mountains, lush green forests, and iconic sites like Dal Lake—not for alcohol. Tourists are free to consume alcohol in their own states; they do not need to come to Kashmir for it. Unfortunately, some politicians are misleading the people of Kashmir, exposing their true agendas."

Dunoo also highlighted the social consequences of alcohol consumption, claiming, "In liquor shops across Kashmir, 80% of alcohol is purchased and consumed by locals, while only 1-2% is bought by tourists. I have personally witnessed this. Many families have been destroyed due to alcohol addiction, and we will never allow it to become common in Kashmir."

Yaqoob Dunoo's remarks have reignited the debate surrounding the proposed liquor ban, underscoring the clash between economic considerations and religious and cultural values. The discussion continues as political figures and the public weigh the potential consequences of alcohol regulation in the region.

Pulwama Police and Municipal Committee Pulwama Conduct Massive Anti-Encroachment Drive in Pulwama Market

Pulwama, February 15, 2025: In a major initiative aimed at improving traffic flow and public convenience, the Pulwama Police, in collaboration with the Municipal Committee Pulwama, conducted a large-scale anti-encroachment drive in the Pulwama Market today. The operation focused on clearing illegal encroachments on footpaths and roads that had been causing severe traffic congestion and inconvenience to the public.

Over the past few years shopkeepers had unlawfully occupied public spaces, including footpaths and roads, leading to long traffic jams and difficulty for pedestrians. The authorities took decisive action to restore order and ensure the smooth flow of traffic, prioritizing the comfort and safety of the public.

Local organizations and residents have strongly appreciated this initiative, acknowledging its positive impact on the daily lives of citizens. They have urged that such steps be continued regularly in the future to maintain a free and safe environment for both pedestrians and vehicles.

The Pulwama Police and Municipal Committee have vowed to maintain a vigilant stance against illegal encroachments and promised further action to uphold the public interest.
