3,952 pilgrims to arrive by June 16; Haj Committee says pending luggage to reach within 2–3 days as smooth reception arrangements remain in place

Srinagar: The first batch of Hajj pilgrims from Jammu & Kashmir arrived at Srinagar International Airport on Tuesday, marking the beginning of the return phase of Hajj-2026 operations.

The inaugural flight carried 144 pilgrims, who were received at the airport by Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, Deputy Commissioner Budgam Athar Aamir Khan and other senior civil and police officials.

Speaking to the media, J&K Haj Committee Chief Executive Officer Dr Shujaat Ahmad Qureshi, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that all 144 pilgrims scheduled on the first return flight arrived safely in Srinagar.

Tourists head to cooler border regions as temps rise

, , , , witness fresh tourist activity

Srinagar: As soaring temperatures continue to grip the plains, tourists are increasingly heading to the cooler border regions of Jammu and Kashmir, bringing fresh activity to some of the remote frontier destinations.

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), tourist arrivals have picked up in Gurez and Tulail valleys in north Kashmir's Bandipora district, as well as Keran and Bangus in Kupwara and Uri in Baramulla district, with visitors seeking relief from the heat and an opportunity to experience the region's natural beauty.

Known for their lush meadows, rivers, mountains and relatively cooler climate, these destinations have witnessed a steady increase in footfall over the past few weeks, providing a boost to local businesses and tourism-related activities.

"We have seen a good number of tourists visiting Gurez in recent weeks. Hotels, guest houses and homestays are receiving more inquiries and bookings," said 38-year-old Ishfaq Ahmad, a resident of Gurez.

He said residents have been actively helping visitors and promoting the valley's tourism potential. "Gurez has immense potential as a tourist destination. Better infrastructure and connectivity will help attract even more visitors," Ahmad said.

In Kupwara district, tourists have also been flocking to Keran and the sprawling Bangus Valley, drawn by the cool weather and scenic landscapes. "The arrival of tourists is encouraging for people here as many families depend directly or indirectly on tourism for their livelihood," said 52-year-old Ghulam Mohammad, a resident of Keran.

He urged the government to focus on improving road connectivity and tourism infrastructure in remote areas.

Visitors described the border destinations as among the most picturesque places in Kashmir.

Adnan Ahmad, 29, a tourist from Srinagar visiting Gurez, said the valley offered everything needed to become a major tourism destination.

"The weather is pleasant, the scenery is stunning, and the environment is peaceful. With better facilities, more people would choose to visit Gurez," he said.

Shazia Khan, 34, a tourist from Delhi who recently visited Bangus Valley, said the region offered a welcome escape from the intense heat prevailing in many parts of the country.

"The cool climate, green meadows and hospitality of residents made the experience memorable. These places deserve greater attention from tourists," she said.

Officials said tourist movement has been increasing steadily across Gurez, Tulail, Keran, Bangus and Uri as visitors continue to seek cooler destinations during the ongoing heatwave.

For residents of these frontier villages, the growing tourist footfall is bringing renewed optimism and helping strengthen local economies during the summer season—(KNO)

LoP Sunil Sharma says Omar Abdullah won’t resign even as executive councillor

“Would accept below than UT-status as long as his protocol remains intact; Abdullah family got 50000 Kashmiris killed for clinging to power”

Srinagar: Ahead of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s meeting with NC legislators on Wednesday, Leader of Opposition Sunil Kumar Sharma on Sunday said that the Chief Minister would not resign even from the position of executive councillor, as long as his protocol remains intact.

Speaking to reporters, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Sharma said Omar Abdullah would accept any status for Jammu and Kashmir- even below that of a Union Territory -provided his protocol remains intact.

“Remember my prediction: no one, even from the next generations of the Abdullah family, would resign. The Abdullah family is seated on the Chief Minister’s chair. God forbid, if Jammu & Kashmir gets Hill Council on the pattern of Ladakh, and Omar becomes an executive councillor, he still wouldn’t resign from that position,” Sharma said.

He added that there is no question of resignation from a family he described as “power-hungry,” alleging that they “got 50,000 Kashmiris killed for their chair.”

“They (NC) are saying they are ready to settle for J&K’s position lower than UT status, provided there is no reduction in their cavalcade of 12 vehicles or protocol,” Sharma said.

The Leader of Opposition further accused the NC and PDP of running a “so-called movement” to keep “incompetent princes and princesses of two families” in power.

“They bled Jammu & Kashmir for 36 hours to save their chairs,” he said.

On the CM’s upcoming meeting with MLAs, Sharma claimed that Omar Abdullah is attempting to ensure that infighting within the party does not spill into the public domain—(KNO)
