Protest at SMHS Hospital as attendant assaults doctor after patient’s death

Deceased’s family alleges medical negligence; doctors protest for security, justice; GMC Srinagar condemns assault; FIR registered

Jahangeer Ganaie

Srinagar, Jul 23 (KNO): Tensions ran high at Srinagar’s SMHS Hospital on Wednesday after a shocking incident in which a young resident doctor from Uttar Pradesh was assaulted by an attendant of a critically ill patient who later succumbed to his condition.

As per the details obtained by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the incident reportedly took place late Tuesday night in the hospital’s emergency ward.

Officials said the attendant became aggressive after the patient’s death and physically attacked Dr Shahnawaz - who himself is a specially-abled person due to polio - in full public view.

A CCTV video capturing the moment the doctor was assaulted has since gone viral on social media, sparking outrage across the medical community and beyond.

Dr Shahnawaz, speaking to KNO, said the incident took place at around 12:15 am on Tuesday. “I was at the medical reception when the patient was brought in. After assessing the patient, his vitals were not recorded, and he was sent to the triage room for further investigation. Unfortunately, the patient later died,” he said. “Following the death, an attendant in his 40s came and kicked me. There are no consultants, CMOs, or security personnel present at night, making it extremely risky for us to work under such conditions. We are here to serve patients, not to be assaulted. We demand a thorough investigation and legal action against the perpetrator.”

*Family alleges medical negligence*

This incident, as per the family of the deceased, came to the fore after a patient named Javid Ahmad, an employee of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), died due to alleged medical negligence at SMHS hospital.

Family members of Javid told KNO that he had some pain in his heart and was brought to the hospital, where both the patient and attendants were pleading with doctors to keep him on oxygen. However, they claimed that doctors repeatedly denied this request.

The family said that even when Javid’s condition deteriorated, the same doctor who was later assaulted ignored his worsening state and asked for some medicine to be brought from outside.

Once his brother-in-law brought the medicine, they said Javid died, and doctors were laughing. In anger, his brother-in-law slapped the doctor, the family said.

They, however, said that slapping a doctor is wrong and sought an apology, but also added that alleged medical negligence led to Javid’s death.

Family members demanded access to the CCTV footage of the incident, saying it would clearly reveal how negligence led to Javid’s death. They called for an independent investigation and warned that anyone involved in negligence must face consequences.

*Doctors protest, demand permanent security*

The incident sparked a massive protest by resident doctors, interns, and other healthcare professionals from GMC Srinagar and its affiliated hospitals. Hundreds gathered within the hospital premises, raising slogans and demanding immediate action against the attacker. They also called for the implementation of robust, permanent security measures across all government healthcare facilities.

“We’re not here to be assaulted; we are here to save lives,” a protesting doctor stated. “This is not an isolated incident. Such attacks are becoming too frequent, and we cannot continue working in constant fear.”

The protesting doctors also expressed concern over alleged attempts to discourage them from speaking out. “We were told to stay silent, but how long can we remain silent while our safety is at risk?” questioned another doctor.

*GMC Srinagar condemns assault*

GMC Srinagar issued a statement condemning the assault. The administration said hospitals are “public institutions serving humanity” and appealed to the public, especially patient attendants, to remain calm and respectful during times of distress.

“Our doctors and staff are working round-the-clock under immense pressure. Any violence against them is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” the statement read.

The college confirmed that legal action has been initiated, with an FIR (No. 11/2025) registered at the concerned police station. A senior police official confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and the accused will be brought to justice soon.

Doctors have warned that if their safety concerns are not addressed promptly, they may escalate their protests. “Today it was Dr Shahnawaz. Tomorrow, it could be any of us. We cannot perform our duties unless we feel safe,” said a senior resident doctor.

The medical fraternity has appealed to the administration to ensure that hospitals remain safe spaces for both patients and healthcare providers. They have called for strict security measures to prevent future incidents.

It is noteworthy that this is the second such incident in Jammu and Kashmir in recent days. Last week, a female doctor at GMC Jammu was physically assaulted by a patient’s attendant following his death in the hospital’s emergency ward. In the aftermath, doctors went on a two-day strike, which was only called off after FIR lodging and assurances from authorities that action would be taken—(KNO)

The incident of physical assault on doctors is highly concerning: Manzoor Bhat

Need for concrete steps to address issues faced by patients in the emergency department of SMHS hospital during evening hours

Srinagar, July 23: BJP senior leader Manzoor Bhat has strongly condemned the recent incident of physical assault on doctors at SMHS hospital. "I strongly believe that the government must take immediate and concrete steps to ensure the safety and security of healthcare professionals," Bhat said.

"The lack of adequate security measures in hospitals is a serious concern that needs to be addressed urgently," he added. "The doctor-patient relationship is crucial and should be built on mutual respect and trust. Doctors must also be empathetic and sensitive towards patients and their families."

Bhat also highlighted the need for concrete steps to address issues faced by patients in the emergency department of SMHS hospital during evening hours. "Patients and their families often complain about the lack of care and attention from doctors, who are mostly junior," he said.

"The Omar Abdullah government should ensure that specialist doctors are available during evening shifts to provide quality care and attention to patients."

Additionally, Bhat suggested that hospitals should have better facilities and security arrangements to ensure patients' safety and well-being. "A help desk can also be set up in hospitals where patients can report their concerns and get immediate assistance," he said. "This would provide relief to patients and ensure their voices are heard. By taking these steps, hospitals can improve patient care and satisfaction."

Bhat emphasized the need to create a culture of respect and empathy towards healthcare professionals. "Patients and their families must understand the critical role doctors play in their treatment, and doctors must also strive to provide compassionate care," he said.

"The Omar Abdullah Government should take this matter seriously and implement concrete measures to prevent such incidents in the future."

Congress Leader ER Danish Reshi Slams BJP, Accuses Party of Losing Relevance in J&K

Srinagar, July 22, 2025: Congress leader ER Danish Reshi launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of losing relevance in Jammu and Kashmir due to its "failed policies." Reshi claimed that the BJP is attempting to mask its shortcomings by labeling architects of India’s unity, such as Congress leaders, as "Hurriyat," a reference to separatist groups in the region.

In a fiery statement, Reshi highlighted the growing discontent among the people of Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that the BJP’s policies have rendered the region "irrelevant" on the national stage. “The people of J&K are witnessing the BJP’s hollow promises and divisive tactics. By branding those who stand for India’s unity as ‘Hurriyat,’ the BJP is desperately trying to hide its governance failures,” Reshi said.

Reshi emphasized the Congress party’s unwavering commitment to the interests of Jammu and Kashmir’s people, particularly through its “Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq” (Our State, Our Right) campaign. The campaign, which has gained significant traction across the region, demands the immediate restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, a key issue since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and the subsequent reorganization of the state into two Union Territories.

The Congress leader also lauded the party’s recent “Delhi Chalo” call, part of the “Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq” movement, which saw over 250 Congress leaders and activists from Jammu and Kashmir march to Delhi to press for statehood restoration during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. “The entire Congress stands united in its legitimate demand for complete statehood. We are fighting for the rights, identity, and aspirations of the people of J&K,” Reshi stated, referencing the party’s protests in Srinagar on July 19 and Jammu on July 20, which were met with police resistance.

Reshi’s remarks come in the wake of the detention of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hameed Karra and other senior leaders during a peaceful “Jammu Chalo” march on July 20. The Congress has accused the BJP-led Lieutenant Governor’s administration of stifling democratic protests, with party leaders like KC Venugopal and Rahul Gandhi vocally condemning the police action and pledging to raise the statehood issue in Parliament.

“The BJP’s actions show they are afraid of the people’s voice,” Reshi added. “No amount of repression can silence our demand for justice and statehood. The Congress will continue to fight until the rights of Jammu and Kashmir’s people are restored.”

The “Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq” campaign has resonated widely across the region, with Congress leaders asserting that it reflects the collective aspirations of the people. As the party prepares to “gherao” Parliament on July 22, Reshi called on the people of J&K to join the movement and hold the BJP accountable for its unfulfilled promises.
