Current situation:
There are about 80 cold storage (CA) stores in Kashmir holding 4 lakh metric tonnes of apples, worth about ₹4,000 crore.
But during storage, fungus (Botrytis and Penicillium) causes rot.

In February, only about 2% apples rot, but by May it can go up to 15%.

On average, about 8% is lost → that’s 32,000 MT of apples, worth around ₹320 crore.

How to reduce losses

1. Harvest carefully –

One fungus (Penicillium) enters only through wounds.

So, apples must be picked gently without cuts or bruises.

2. Sorting at packhouse –

Remove damaged or bruised apples before putting them in storage.

3. Before harvest (in the orchard) –

Farmers can spray protective fungicides a few days before harvest.

Common ones used in the West are:

boscalid + pyraclostrobin

cyprodinil + fludioxonil

Captan

4. After harvest (postharvest dips/sprays) –

Some countries allow treatment with fungicides like fludioxonil, pyrimethanil to protect apples in storage.

5. Storage hygiene –

Keep storage rooms clean and disinfected.

Maintain proper controlled atmosphere (CA) conditions (right temperature, humidity, oxygen, CO₂).

👉 In short: Apples rot in storage and cost growers a lot of money. To prevent this, farmers need careful harvesting, sorting, fungicide sprays before harvest, possible postharvest protection, and clean storage management.
