Six Minutes of Night at Noon: 2027 Eclipse to Stun Millions

Rare celestial event will create the longest total solar eclipse visible from land this century, casting darkness over Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East for over six minutes
A spectacular total solar eclipse will darken skies over Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East on August 2, 2027, offering millions a once-in-a-lifetime celestial experience. Known as the “Great North African Eclipse,” the event will feature up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds of total darkness, making it the longest land-visible eclipse between 1991 and 2114.

The eclipse will occur in the early to mid-afternoon, depending on location, with the full event lasting nearly three hours from first to final contact. Central Egypt, especially Luxor, will witness the longest totality, while cities from Cádiz in Spain to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia will also fall under the shadow.

Clear skies across North Africa, particularly in Libya and Egypt, promise ideal conditions for observers and scientists studying the Sun’s corona.

This unusually long eclipse results from three rare astronomical factors:

Earth will be at aphelion (its farthest point from the Sun), making the Sun appear smaller.

The Moon will be at perigee (its closest point to Earth), appearing larger.

The shadow path will track near the equator, where Earth’s rotation slows the shadow’s movement, extending totality.

The path of totality, stretching up to 275 kilometers wide, will cross Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia before moving over the Indian Ocean. Regions such as India, the Americas, and much of Asia will miss the show.

For scientists and skywatchers alike, the 2027 eclipse offers a rare chance to study solar phenomena and witness a natural wonder unmatched for nearly a century..

Police Foil J&K Congress Protest March for Statehood, Karra terms police action undemocratic.

Jammu July 20 : Police on Sunday thwarted a protest march led by the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) demanding the restoration of statehood. The march, organized in Jammu, saw heavy deployment of police forces, resulting in the detention of several Congress leaders, including PCC president Tariq Hamid Karra.

Talking to media, Karra Called the police action "undemocratic" and a "brute use of force," Karra strongly condemned the police action, stating that the people's democratic right to protest was being stifled. The protest was part of the Congress’s broader campaign to press for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

He said that we were supposed to present our memorandum to the LG (Lieutenant Governor), but as you saw, how the peaceful procession was sabotaged by the police using force and also by arresting us. Whatever is happening right now is being done in an undemocratic manner there's an attempt to suppress our voice, he said.

We have decided that the slogan we gave earlier first "Chalo Srinagar" (Let’s go to Srinagar), then "Chalo Jammu" (Let’s go to Jammu), and now the new slogan we’ve given "Chalo Chalo Dilli Chalo" (Let’s go, let’s go to Delhi), under this slogan, we will begin our march towards Delhi tomorrow. We will try to also surround the Parliament House if possible, he said.

Why are we being stopped? Who is behind the police? Because it’s clear who the police is working under. This is failure of BJP as they want to run Jammu and Kashmir through hooliganism, we will not allow that hooliganism to succeed, he added..

New Jammu & Kashmir Is a Living Reality, Not a Slogan: LG Manoj Sinha

Srinagar, July 20 : Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday hailed the dedication and sacrifice of the Jammu and Kashmir Police. He said the force, from senior officers to SPOs, has shown unmatched courage and commitment to the nation. “The history of J&K Police is written with the blood of brave soldiers who gave everything for the motherland,” he said.

He spoke about the role of the police in the last five to six years, saying they have helped bring peace, strengthen national unity, and create new hope among people across the region. He added that peace and development must go hand in hand and the momentum must be maintained.

LG Sinha referred to the “Pedal to Paralyzed” Cycle Race as a meaningful step towards youth engagement. “Every pedal is a step toward a better tomorrow. It’s not just a race—it’s a message to young people affected by violence or drug addiction that a new path is possible,” he said.

LG Sinha said the idea of a “New Jammu and Kashmir” is not a slogan but a visible change on the ground. He invited people to look back six years and compare. “Children now carry pens instead of stones. Schools remain open all year. Youth are working on startups, innovation, and research. Big dreams are being shaped in small villages.”

He said today, cultural and religious events take place without fear. Muharram processions and Ram Janaki yatras are held peacefully. Families can enjoy nightlife, and people can watch movies in local theatres instead of traveling to Delhi or Chandigarh. These changes reflect a shift in the atmosphere and lifestyle of the region.

LG Sinha also spoke about the role of youth in this transformation. He said their energy and potential are central to building a stronger Jammu and Kashmir. The development journey must continue with the involvement of all, especially the younger generation.

He called for unity against terrorism, drugs, and the networks that support them. “Our aim is a terror-free, drug-free, and fit Jammu and Kashmir. I appeal to the youth to come forward and play their part in building a peaceful and progressive future,” he said. “This is the new Jammu and Kashmir—real, confident, and full of possibilities.”..

Kashmir's Blackboard Crisis’

Over 890 staff vacancies, 98 rented buildings: Budgam schools struggle with acute shortages

12 Principal, 171 Lecturer posts vacant for years; lack of water, electricity adds to woes for 7,500 students in 917 govt schools.

Srinagar, Jul 19 : Students enrolled in government schools across central Kashmir’s Budgam district are facing major hardships due to acute staff shortages and lack of basic amenities, with many suffering in silence as these issues remain unaddressed.

Details accessed, reveal a concerning scenario in Budgam, where a significant number of schools have long-standing vacancies for principals, headmasters, and other key staff. The district, which has 13 education zones, is grappling with a shortage of not only principals, headmasters, and master grade teachers, but also Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) and lecturers.

Out of the 917 government schools catering to 7,548 students in Budgam, 12 of the 46 sanctioned principal positions remain vacant. Of the 572 lecturer posts, a staggering 171 have been vacant for the past three years. Additionally, 460 middle schools in the district are struggling due to a severe lack of teachers.

Though Budgam has 101 high schools, the district is short 210 master’s positions and has four unfilled posts in areas such as Magam, Khag, Khan Sahib, and Char Sharif. Five Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) positions in Khan Sahib, Budgam, and Khag also remain vacant.

Support staff shortages are equally concerning. There are 568 vacant head assistant posts, 12 senior assistant posts, 16 junior assistant positions, five laboratory assistants, 21 librarians, 17 library assistants, and 90 Class IV and MTS positions that have been unfilled for years.

Locals say that the absence of principals and headmasters is negatively impacting the quality of education. In many cases, a single principal has been given charge of up to three schools, complicating administrative tasks for both staff and students. Employees have expressed strong dissatisfaction over the failure to assign additional charges for secondary schools in several areas.

Adding to the woes, 98 schools across the district, from primary to higher secondary level, are operating from rented buildings—36 primary, 59 middle, two high schools, and one higher secondary. Senior education officials have failed to address these infrastructure issues, with the administration largely playing the role of a silent spectator.

A lack of proper drinking water and electricity in most schools is causing further distress to students. Local residents have voiced their frustration with the education department and are demanding urgent action to resolve the persistent staff shortages and basic facility gaps that are hampering the education and well-being of thousands of children in Budgam..

India’s Water Will Now Serve India: LG Manoj Sinha

Jhelum and Chenab control to boost Jammu and Kashmir development, Pakistan to face economic impact.

Srinagar, July 19 : Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said on Saturday that India will fully use its rightful share of water resources to benefit its people, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, while also supplying other regions of the country.

J&K Congress intensifies statehood campaign, launches Srinagar Chalo on 19th, Jammu on 20th, and Delhi on 21st July

“Rahul Gandhi and Kharge Ji echo J&K’s pain in letter to PM”: Karra.

Srinagar, July 19 : The Indian National Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir has intensified its statehood campaign, which they launched last month for the restoration of statehood to J&K. The party will march to Srinagar on 19th July, to Jammu on 20th July, and then to Delhi on 21st July.

Talking to the media, J&K Congress President Tariq Hamid Karra said, “For us, the assurances given in Srinagar turned out to be nothing more than empty words. Keeping this in mind, both leaders (Kharge Ji and Rahul Gandhi Ji) wrote a letter in which they included the dates and instances when these assurances were made, and stated clearly: 'No more waiting.'”

He said, “With this in view, we decided to intensify our ongoing movement in Srinagar and Jammu. As part of this intensification, we made the decision to launch a ‘Chalo Srinagar, Chalo Jammu’ (‘Let's go to Srinagar, Let's go to Jammu’) campaign on the 19th in Srinagar and the 20th in Jammu. Following that, we gave a call for ‘Chalo Delhi’ (‘Let's go to Delhi’) on the 21st, under which our senior leadership will go there to demand immediate restoration of statehood.”

He also said that this state was divided into two parts into two Union Territories and ever since then, the Congress Party launched a campaign in Jammu and Kashmir. “Over the past six months, we started a movement called ‘Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq’ (‘Our State, Our Right’). Whether in Jammu or in Kashmir, we campaigned across the 20 districts of Jammu and Kashmir. In every district, we went and presented the importance of the ‘Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq’.”

“You’ll be pleased to know that this program and slogan received a warm response in every district across Jammu and Kashmir. During this time, our President Kharge Ji and our leader Rahul Gandhi Ji, understanding the pain of the people of Jammu and Kashmir their emotions, feelings, aspirations, and needs—wrote a letter to the Prime Minister. In that letter, they clearly stated that for months, both inside and outside of Parliament, you (the PM) have been repeatedly giving assurances. Time and again, you say that when the appropriate time comes, the restoration of statehood will be done,” he said.

“Through this, we aim to amplify our voices and align them with the voices of all our leaders, so that the feelings, aspirations, emotions, and needs of the people of Jammu and Kashmir reach the ears of the government. For your information, the letter that Rahul Ji and Kharge Ji sent was based on all these concerns,” Karra said.

He also said that the backing for statehood is not only from the Congress Party’s 108 members but also from 233 members of our INDIA bloc alliance in the Lok Sabha. “We want to make it clear that without the intervention of the Congress without the efforts of Rahul Ji, Kharge Ji, and their team it would be impossible to restore the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.”

“At this point, we have prepared a memorandum, and we will march toward the office of the Divisional Commissioner to present this memorandum to them, which will then be forwarded to the Lieutenant Governor (LG),” he added..
