Liquor ban Why form committee when alcohol will be a crime NC MP Ruhullah questions Omar-led govt.

Srinagar, Jun 5 : National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah on Friday questioned his party-led government's decision to form a committee on the proposed liquor ban in Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that a "clear public mandate" already exists against alcohol.

MP Ruhullah said, "Why should we form a committee? We have to sit in the cabinet and take a decision."

The Srinagar MP said a committee is only needed to seek public opinion. "But here, people have already told you their opinion when they voted for you — that alcohol is a crime. Now, you should be ashamed," he said.

MP Ruhullah said, "The BJP also tells you that alcohol is a crime. It is a joke to hear this from them. But you gave them a chance to speak."

Asserting that there was a clear public mandate against liquor, he said, "Why should we form a committee? We should sit in the cabinet and take a decision. Alcohol will be a crime. I don't understand this joke."

Notably, the Jammu and Kashmir government had on Wednesday announced it would constitute a committee to examine a proposal seeking a ban on the sale and consumption of liquor in the Union Territory..

"The day we are buried, Kashmir will be buried. Article 370 will be buried," the NC President told.

The veteran leader's remarks come days after the party announced it will hold a protest in New Delhi on the first day of Parliament’s upcoming Monsoon Session, pressing for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood and constitutional guarantees.

Regarding the proposed meeting of the opposition INDIA bloc scheduled for June 8, Dr. Farooq Abdullah confirmed his party's participation.

"Omar and I—one of us will go. Obviously, we are part of that. We will be there," the National Conference president said..

If everyone is sincere, let us suspend parties to launch collective movement: CM Omar Abdullah

Says he will be first to resign.

Srinagar, June 05 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday proposed suspending party identities and launching a collective democratic movement for restoration of rights of the rights of people of Jammu & Kashmir.

Speaking at The Hindu Huddle, CM Omar said "If everyone is sincere, let us suspend political parties and stand together on one movement platform. We should fight democratically and peacefully until the constitutional rights and protections taken away in 2019 are restored.”

The CM said he would be willing to make personal political sacrifices if such a united movement emerged.

"I will be the first one to resign. Let representatives come from a common movement platform," he said.

He stressed that any effort to regain rights must be consistent and not limited to symbolic gestures.

"People will call it a drama if there is no sincerity and continuity. It cannot be a one-off exercise. Continuous efforts are needed to build public trust," he said.

The CM said there were efforts in different parts of the country to radicalise youngsters on religious lines and warned that such trends could have wider consequences.

"When you see an effort to radicalise youngsters, particularly in the north of the country, on religious lines, at the behest of our ruling party, you cannot expect there will be no knock-on effect elsewhere," he said.

The National Conference leader said the notion that every young Muslim, particularly every young Kashmiri Muslim, was inclined towards militancy was incorrect.

"There are elements trying to radicalise youngsters, but this propaganda that every young Muslim Kashmiri boy is a jihadi looking to pick up a gun and murder innocent people could not be further from the truth," he said.

Referring to the April 2025 Pahalgam attack, he said the subsequent investigation did not identify local Kashmiri youth among the attackers.

"After the investigation was concluded and the people behind the attack were identified, not one of the attackers was a local Kashmiri boy. They were all from outside Jammu and Kashmir," he said, adding that one local individual was accused of providing support under coercion.

He said attempts to project Kashmiri youth as "radicalised" and "gun-toting" were aimed at creating a false impression about an entire generation..

Hakeem Yaseen Questions NC's Statehood Agenda, Demands Clarity on Dehli’s protest

Questions whether NC is seeking pre-August 2019 statehood with constitutional safeguards or a diluted arrangement
Says ruling party is diverting attention from its electoral promises on Article 370 and 35A

Jantar Mantar Protest Won't Solve Core Issues Without Clear Agenda.

Srinagar, June 04 : President People's Democratic Front (PDF) and former Minister, Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen, on Thursday said that while it is encouraging that the National Conference-led government under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has finally decided to stage a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood, the party must first come clean on what exactly it is seeking from the Centre.

In a statement issued here, Hakeem said the restoration of statehood is not a favour but a commitment already made by the Union Government.

He pointed out that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have publicly assured Parliament and the people of Jammu and Kashmir that statehood would be restored at an appropriate time.

"Statehood has already been promised on the floor of Parliament. It is a commitment made by the country's highest leadership, and the Centre must fulfil it without any further delay," Hakeem said.
However, he questioned the National Conference's sudden decision to launch an agitation on the issue nearly two years after assuming office.

"The people of Jammu and Kashmir did not vote for the National Conference merely for the restoration of statehood. The party sought votes in the name of restoring the constitutional and political rights of the people, including the restoration of Article 370 and Article 35A, which were revoked on August 5, 2019," he said.
Hakeem said the National Conference owes an explanation to the people regarding its roadmap and political objective.

"The NC leadership must clarify whether it is demanding the restoration of the same statehood that existed before August 5, 2019, with constitutional safeguards and protections for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, or whether it is seeking a diluted form of statehood without any guarantees, safeguards, or special constitutional provisions," he said.

He asserted that if the ruling party is seeking a statehood arrangement devoid of meaningful constitutional protections, it would amount to misleading the people and betraying the mandate they received during the elections.

"The people voted with certain expectations and aspirations. If those aspirations are now being reduced to a limited demand for statehood without safeguards, then the government is not respecting the people's mandate," Hakeem remarked.

The PDF president further alleged that the ruling dispensation has failed to address the core political issues facing Jammu and Kashmir and is now attempting to divert public attention through symbolic political exercises.

"Two years have passed, and the government has achieved nothing on the promises it made to the people. Now, after all this time, it has suddenly realised the importance of statehood and is preparing for a protest. Such an exercise will remain a routine political drama unless there is clarity of purpose and sincerity of intent," he said.

Hakeem reiterated that if the National Conference is genuinely seeking the restoration of the pre-August 2019 status of Jammu and Kashmir, including constitutional guarantees and safeguards, it should state so unequivocally. "If that is their position, we are prepared to extend our support. But the people deserve clarity, not political theatrics," he added..

Baramulla Police restricts tourist movement on Hajibal-Babareshi route.

Baramulla, Jun 4 : Baramulla Police on Thursday issued an advisory restricting the movement of tourists towards the Mulbangil-Batoo route via the Hajibal-Babareshi axis, officials said.

The advisory noted a recent increase in the movement of tourists to the interior areas of Mulbangil and Batoo, facilitated in some cases by tourism service providers, guides, and transport operators.

Police said the Qazipora-Ziran-Batoo-Mulbangil-Hajibal route is not part of the notified tourist circuit and passes through remote areas lacking adequate visitor support and emergency response facilities.

"In the interest of public safety, police shall be regulating and prohibiting tourist movement towards the aforesaid route with immediate effect and until further notice," the advisory stated.

All hotel owners, homestay operators, travel agencies, taxi operators, tourist guides, and pony operators have been advised not to facilitate, advertise, or encourage tourist visits to the restricted area.

Police teams have been deployed at appropriate locations to enforce the restrictions. Officials said any individual or agency found violating these directions shall attract strict legal action.

Tourists have been requested to cooperate with authorities and confine their visits to approved destinations in the Tangmarg-Gulmarg area, the advisory added..

JKTA seeks transfer of masters who completed tenure in hard zones.

Baramulla, Jun 4 : The Jammu and Kashmir Teachers Association (JKTA), Baramulla unit, on Tuesday urged the authorities to implement the transfer policy for masters who have completed their prescribed tenure in hard zones, particularly in Uri and Rafiabad areas of the district.

District President JKTA Baramulla, Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat, said a large number of masters posted in Zone 4 and Zone 5 areas continue to serve beyond their mandatory tenure despite provisions in the existing transfer policy.

According to the policy, masters posted in Zone 4 are required to serve for two years, while those posted in Zone 5 are required to serve for one year before becoming eligible for transfer, he said.

Bhat alleged that many teachers in the two zones have completed their tenure and, in several cases, have remained posted there for more than three years.

He said the delay in implementing transfers has caused concern among employees awaiting their turn under the policy.

"The transfer policy was framed to ensure fairness, transparency and equal opportunities for employees and should be implemented in its true spirit," Bhat said.

He urged the JKTA leadership to take up the matter with the concerned authorities and seek the immediate transfer of all eligible masters who have completed their prescribed tenure.

Bhat said timely implementation of the policy was necessary to maintain employees' confidence and uphold the principles of justice, transparency and fairness..

NC Leadership Lacks Faith In Its Own MLAs ; MP Ruhullah.

Srinagar, Jun 4 : National Conference leader and MP from Srinagar Syed Aga Ruhullah Mehdi on Thursday criticised the manner in which the ruling party conducted its recent legislators' meeting at Dachigam, saying the shifting of MLAs from one venue to another suggested the leadership lacked trust in its own ranks.

"The manner in which the meeting was conducted, with MLAs being moved from one venue to another, created an impression that the leadership lacks faith in its own legislators," the Srinagar MP told.

MP Ruhullah, a senior party leader, said the tour of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah-led NC legislators to Dachigam appeared as if a floor test was being conducted.

"Such optics suggested a lack of confidence in the party's own MLAs," he said.

The MP asserted that discussions would only be meaningful if they translated into sustained political action aimed at restoring the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Referring to PDP president Mehbooba Mufti's recent appeal for joint action by political parties, MP Ruhullah welcomed broader participation but stressed that symbolic gestures alone would not be enough.

On the proposed committee to examine prohibition, the MP questioned the need for consultations, asserting there was already a broad public consensus on the issue.

"There is no need for a committee. The government should take a decision in the Cabinet if it believes there is public support for prohibition," he said.

Notably, after a day-long meeting of the National Conference legislative party at the Dachigam National Park on Wednesday, the party has decided to hold a protest demonstration in the national capital on the first day of the monsoon session, seeking the restoration of statehood and J&K's "constitutional guarantees"..

No theatrics, only consistency: Ruhullah Mehdi sets condition for J&K statehood fight.

Srinagar, Jun 4 : National Conference senior leader and Srinagar MP Syed Aga Ruhullah Mehdi on Thursday said any fight for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood and constitutional guarantees must be based on "consistency and credibility", not "theatrics or optics".

MP Ruhullah said credibility of the political leadership was at stake as people were asking questions.

"The condition is that there should be sustainability and consistency. If there is no consistency, then there will be theatrics," the MP said.

Srinagar MP Ruhulla who claimed he was not invited to yesterday's party meeting, said a serious movement required a roadmap and outreach across Kashmir and Delhi.

"Do not try to fool people by sitting somewhere for a day. Make a roadmap. Reach out to the whole of Kashmir. Create a movement," he said.

He also called for forcing the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and creating momentum inside and outside Parliament.

Citing the example of Ladakh, MP Mehdi said Kashmir's political leadership should learn how to fight unitedly for rights.

"If everyone is sincere, all political parties should suspend their political identities and come together on a single platform. We should build a democratic and peaceful movement until the rights taken away in 2019 are restored," he said.

The MP said he was willing to take the first step by resigning from Parliament if a common movement was formed.

"I will be the first one to resign from Parliament. Let representatives be chosen from a common movement platform rather than party platforms until our constitutional rights are restored," he said.

MP Ruhullah said political parties often unite briefly before returning to electoral competition, which weakens collective efforts.

"If parties are serious, they should keep electoral politics aside and focus entirely on the movement. People will only trust such efforts if they see sincerity and consistency," he said.

Notably, The National Conference on Wednesday announced it will hold a protest in New Delhi on the first day of Parliament's Monsoon Session, pressing for restoration of J&K's statehood and constitutional guarantees. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at Dachigam National Park..

Zojila Tunnel breakthrough on June 9, only few metres left.

13.15-km tunnel to link J&K, Ladakh; Union Minister Gadkari to trigger blast.

Ganderbal, Jun 03 : The strategically significant 13.15-kilometre Zojila Tunnel, linking Jammu and Kashmir with Ladakh, is set to reach a major milestone on June 9 as Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari is scheduled to trigger the breakthrough blast.

Once completed, the tunnel will become the world's longest single-tube bi-directional road tunnel at an altitude of nearly 11,500 feet, ensuring seamless all-weather connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and Kargil, and significantly enhancing connectivity, mobility and economic activity in the strategically vital region.

The 13.15-km tunnel, being developed beneath the Zojila Pass at an altitude of around 11,500 feet, is expected to provide year-round road connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh region, reducing dependence on the weather-sensitive mountain pass.

Harpal Singh, joint chief operating officer of Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited, told that excavation has entered its final phase, with only a few metres of digging left before the two ends of the tunnel meet.

He said work on the main tunnel was undertaken simultaneously from the Baltal side in Kashmir and the Minamarg side in Ladakh to accelerate construction.

The project, awarded in 2020 and taken up for ex*****on in 2021, has witnessed construction under challenging Himalayan conditions, including weak rock formations, water seepage and difficult terrain. More than a thousand engineers, technicians and workers are currently involved in the project.

Constructed at an estimated cost of about Rs 2,600 crore, the tunnel is designed as a single-tube, two-lane structure with a horseshoe-shaped profile. It is being built using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), which is considered suitable for complex mountain geology.

Following the breakthrough, focus will shift to internal works, including concrete lining, installation of ventilation systems and other safety infrastructure.

The tunnel will also feature a dedicated walkway for maintenance and emergency operations. Once completed, it is expected to significantly improve connectivity, mobility and economic activity in the region throughout the year..
