Anantnag: Irrigation Crisis in Auran Hall Batengoo, Farmers Distressed as Locals Begin Cleaning Canals Themselves
Anantnag: Farmers in the Auran Hall Batengoo area of Anantnag district are facing severe difficulties due to the lack of irrigation facilities. Local farmers allege that the Irrigation Department has failed to provide the water required for paddy cultivation, raising fears of significant crop losses.
Under the supervision of social activist Ghazi Goori, local farmers have started cleaning the Nandi Canal and irrigation channels to restore the flow and supply of water. Farmers said that if water is not made available in time, paddy cultivation in the area will be seriously affected.
Meanwhile, women in Auran Hall are making extraordinary efforts to save paddy nurseries by carrying water in buckets and earthen pots. They expressed hope that the ongoing canal-cleaning work will help restore water supply to their fields and prevent their hard work from going to waste.
Social activist Ghazi Goori strongly criticized the Irrigation Department, alleging that officials are visible in villages alongside revenue officials and village representatives when collecting annual water charges, but remain absent when farmers need irrigation facilities the most.
He stated that maintaining the irrigation system is one of the department’s primary responsibilities, yet it has failed to carry out even this seasonal task effectively. Local residents have appealed to the District Development Commissioner (DDC) Anantnag to review the performance of the concerned officials and order an inquiry into the matter so that farmers receive justice and such issues do not recur in the future.
The residents urged the administration to intervene immediately and restore irrigation facilities, emphasizing that timely water supply is essential for protecting farmers’ livelihoods and sustaining agricultural activities in the region.
