*The Virtues of the Month of Muḥarram*
His Eminence Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān, Member of the Council of Senior Scholars & the Permanent Committee for Fatwa, said:
“Among the virtues of the month of Muḥarram is that it is one of the four sacred months, regarding which Allāh ﷻ says:
“Verily, the number of months with Allâh is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allâh on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred (i.e. the 1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islâmic calendar).” [Sūrah al-Tawbah (9): 36]
Another of its virtues is that fasting during it is recommended, as it is from the sacred months. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best of fasting after the month of Ramaḍān is the fasting in the month of Allāh, al-Muḥarram.” [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim]
Among its greatest merits is that it contains the day of ʿĀshūrā’, a day the Prophet ﷺ was especially keen to fast. It has been authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ:
“Fasting the day of ʿĀshūrā’, I hope from Allāh that it will expiate the sins of the previous year.” [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim]
Thus, the Muslim should be diligent in seizing these blessed seasons through righteous deeds.”
