Hashmi calls for a Comprehensive, Scientific, People-centric & Long-Term Flood Prevention Strategy in J&K.
QOM, IRAN –SEPTEMBER 3, 2025– Agha Syed Karar Hashmi, a prominent sociopolitical activist and student of Hauza-Ilmia Qom from Jammu and Kashmir, currently based in Iran, has issued an urgent appeal concerning the catastrophic floods devastating his homeland, demanding a permanent and scientific prevention strategy.
In a press statement, Hashmi highlighted that the region is facing a severe natural disaster, with relentless rainfall triggering flash floods and landslides that have, according to recent reports, claimed over 50 lives in the past week alone. The crisis evokes traumatic memories of the 2014 floods, which killed hundreds and submerged vast areas.
"In the holy city of Qom, my heart is heavy, and my eyes are fixed on the distressing news from our beloved Jammu and Kashmir," said Hashmi. The alarming rise in water levels has plunged our valley into a state of fear and uncertainty. It is profoundly disheartening to witness our communities, who have endured immense suffering in the past, once again confronting a similar threat while feeling exposed and vulnerable."
Hashmi noted that experts have blamed the severity of the disaster on poor natural resource management and reckless developmental projects that have disturbed the region's ecological balance. Current reports confirm widespread devastation, with overflowing rivers like the Jhelum and Tawi destroying homes, washing away bridges, and crippling critical telecommunications and power infrastructure.
Extending his solidarity to every affected family, particularly in severely impacted areas like Ganderbal, Anantnag, and Jammu, Hashmi implored residents to prioritize safety. "My spirit is with every family. "I urgently implore everyone, especially those near riverbanks and in low-lying areas, to heed official advisories, move to higher ground if instructed, and never underestimate the power of the water."
Beyond immediate relief, Hashmi emphasized that this crisis must serve as a final wake-up call for transparent and decisive action. It is no longer sufficient to manage these crises reactively. "We need a comprehensive, scientific, and people-centric flood prevention strategy to be implemented without further delay. "The time for excuses is over; proactive, permanent solutions are now imperative," he stated, echoing widespread criticism over the failure to learn from past tragedies.
He concluded on a note of faith and community resilience: "In these moments of trial, we must turn to Allah (SWT) with sincerity and hope. We pray for safety, but we must also act with wisdom, caution, and a profound sense of community. Let us support one another and work collectively towards a resilient future for our homeland."
