Jammu Kashmir Election Results 2024 Live: NC-Cong alliance set to form govt in first polls in a decade, BJP emerges second largest party
Jammu Kashmir Election Results 2024 Live Updates: With Omar Abdullah's victory in Budgam and Ganderbal, his father and NC chief Farooq Abdullah has indicated that he "will become the CM".
The National Conference-Congress alliance is set to form government in Jammu and Kashmir in what was the first Assembly election in a decade for the Union Territory. National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah won both Budgam and Ganderbal seats by considerable margins. After Omar’s victory in Budgam, his father and NC chief Farooq Abdullah said he “will become the CM”. Meanwhile, the BJP secured its highest ever vote share in assembly polls in J&K, securing 29 seats. The Aam Aadmi Party, in a surprise entry, won its first ever seat in the UT in the Doda Assembly constituency.
Where do the numbers stand? The NC-Congress alliance crossed the 46-seat majority mark, securing 48 seats . The NC won the highest number of seats at 42 while the Congress took six. The BJP won 29 seats, while the PDP secured three. Seven Independents were declared victorious. The Aam Aadmi Party, in a surprise entry, won its first ever seat in the UT in the Doda Assembly constituency.
What had the exit polls predicted? The exit polls predicted that no party may cross the 46-seat majority mark in 90-member House. However, four pollsters — Dainik Bhaskar, India Today – C Voter, Peoples Pulse and Axis My India — gave the edge to the Congress-National Conference, projecting at least 35 seats for the alliance. This was followed by the BJP, which is expected to win at least 20 seats, and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with 4-7 seats. The exit polls also showed two broad trends — the near decimation of the PDP, and the BJP managing to hold on to its seats in the Jammu region. The overall voter turnout for the three phases of J&K elections was 63.45 per cent, settling just under the 2014 mark, but much more than the figures seen during the Lok Sabha polls months ago.
