NC on ventilator, expansion will split party: Sunil Sharma

Srinagar, May 9: Leader of the Opposition (LoP) and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sunil Sharma on Saturday alleged that the National Conference (NC) is "on a ventilator" due to an internal "disease" and warned that any "expansion" would lead to a vertical split in the party.

Speaking to news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS), the senior BJP leader claimed that only a few individuals, assigned the task of speaking against the BJP, are responsible for infecting the NC's internal health. He linked the recent protests at the NC headquarters, Nawai-e-Subah, to the deepening crisis.

"Whatever happened at the NC headquarters is because of those who have been given the duty to speak against us. That is the reason for that disease," he added.

LoP Sharma asserted that the malady had spread beyond cure. "If they do a small expansion, there will be two outbreaks. The National Conference will be divided into two parts. It will fall like a bag. The disease has gone so deep that they have no cure," he said.

Drawing a parallel with the Shiv Sena's split, he said the party had created the crisis itself. "Two Shiv Senas were made by themselves. No matter how much they try, the house is broken. There is a major hole in it, and at any time you will see that this wall has fallen," Sharma said.

He, however, ruled out any intervention from his side. "Neither do we believe in it," he added.

Amar Singh College Row Takes Political Turn, Students Say Principal Made ‘Scapegoat’

Srinagar, May 8: The Amar Singh College harassment controversy appears to be taking a political turn, with several students alleging that the suspended Principal has been made a “scapegoat” despite following institutional protocols after the allegations surfaced on campus.
Students said the college administration acted immediately after protests erupted over alleged verbal harassment involving a faculty member from the Department of Media Studies.
According to the Principal, Prof. Aijaz Ahmed Hakak, the administration promptly intervened, recorded the student’s statement, initiated an inquiry, and relieved the accused faculty member from departmental affairs pending investigation.
The Principal also said that the college’s proctorial committee and Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) mechanisms were already in place to deal with such complaints and that awareness regarding harassment-related issues was regularly promoted across the campus.
Students claimed that the Principal cooperated with protesters, ensured transparency, and handled the matter through proper institutional channels instead of suppressing the issue.
The controversy intensified after Apni Party leader Jibran Dar joined protesting students inside the college campus a day before the suspension order was issued.
Many students believe the Principal became a victim of the situation despite following due process and taking immediate administrative action against the accused faculty member.
Earlier, Education Minister Sakeena Itoo ordered the suspension of both the Principal and the Assistant Professor pending inquiry into the incident.

Iran Will Soon Celebrate ‘Great Victory’ in War Against US-Israel, says VP Aref

Tehran, May 8: Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref has claimed that the Islamic Republic will soon be marking a “great victory” in its ongoing confrontation with the United States and Israel, as reported by the state-run Press TV.
Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref voiced defiant optimism on Thursday regarding the international constraints currently facing the country. He signalled that the period of economic and diplomatic isolation was nearing its end, suggesting an imminent shift in the nation’s fortunes.
“We will soon hold our victory celebration, and the sanctions and pressures that have been imposed on the Iranian nation over recent years will be lifted with the great victory of the Iranian nation,” Aref was quoted as saying. His remarks underscored a conviction that Tehran is on the verge of overcoming the systematic external pressures applied against it in recent years.
These pronouncements we made against a backdrop of renewed hostilities, as both nations engaged in an exchange of fire within the strategic Strait of Hormuz on the same day. Tehran has levelled accusations against Washington for allegedly violating the standing ceasefire, while American officials have maintained that they do not intend to escalate the situation and that the truce remains operational.
Adding to the tension, US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to the Iranian leadership, cautioning that “we’ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently” should a formal agreement not be reached in the near future.
In a phone conversation with Rachel Scott, Senior Political Correspondent for ABC News, the President insisted that the ceasefire is still in effect despite the recent skirmishes. He sought to downplay the significance of the American military strikes, characterising the retaliatory actions as “just a love tap.”
When specifically questioned by Scott on whether the reported escalation signalled collapse of the truce, Trump responded, “No, no, the ceasefire is going. It’s in effect.”
Earlier, the President utilised Truth Social to confirm that three American destroyers had “transited very successfully” out of the Strait of Hormuz. He noted that the vessels were fired upon by Iranian forces during the passage but claimed that the opposing naval boats were “completely destroyed,” while missiles and drones targeting the US assets were intercepted.
Providing further context o the nature of the American response. Fox News Chief National Security
Correspondent Jennifer Griffin, citing a senior US official, reported that the military had conducted strikes on strategically vital maritime corridors. These strikes followed reports of multiple explosions near the Qeshm port and Bandar Abbas in southern Iran.
In a series of updates on X, Griffin stated that the official confirmed the strikes but emphasised that the operation was not a precursor to a wider conflict. “US military just carried out strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Port and Bandar Abbas: Senior US official tells me, but this is not a restarting of the war,” Griffin posted.
The official reportedly reiterated that the action was restricted in its objectives and should not be viewed as a breakdown of current de-escalation efforts, stating it was “not a restarting of the war or end to the ceasefire.” (ANI)

Amar Singh College Orders Probe After Students Protest Alleged Harassment by Faculty Member

Srinagar, May 7: Authorities at Amar Singh College on Thursday ordered an inquiry after students staged a protest over allegations of verbal harassment against a senior faculty member of the Department of Media Studies.
Principal Prof. Aijaz Ahmed Hakak said the incident unfolded during the afternoon session while normal classwork was underway in the college.
“Students gathered and started a demonstration. Immediately, when we went there, one female student complained about harassment by a faculty member of the Department of Media Studies,” Hakak said.
He said the college administration promptly intervened, listened to the concerns raised by the students and initiated preliminary action.
“We have taken her statement, and now the college committee will investigate the matter. A fact-based report will be submitted to the Higher Education Department,” he said.
According to the principal, the allegation pertains to verbal harassment. He, however, said the matter is still at a preliminary stage, and the accused faculty member has not yet been contacted, as the students were agitated when the issue surfaced.
“We have listened to the students and noted their concerns. The proctorial committee will look into the matter completely,” Hakak said.
As an immediate administrative measure, the faculty member concerned has been relieved of departmental affairs, while a senior faculty member has been assigned to oversee the functioning of the department till the inquiry is completed.
“Meanwhile, we have relieved the faculty member from departmental affairs, and a senior faculty member will look after the affairs of the department,” the principal said.
Hakak said the students have now been pacified and assured by the administration, and that there is no law and order issue on the campus.
“Their concerns were immediately addressed. There is no issue now, and normal classes will continue,” he said.
The principal also said the students themselves informed the administration that they had not formally brought the issue to the notice of the college authorities earlier.
Hakak said the college already has multiple institutional mechanisms in place to address complaints related to harassment, including disciplinary and Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) structures.
“For the protection of female students, committees are already in place in the college. Awareness regarding any kind of harassment is regularly promoted, and committee guidelines are displayed prominently across departments and blocks,” he said.
He added that complaint boxes have also been installed at designated places on the campus to enable students to report grievances and bring matters to the attention of the college authorities.

Diversion of poor pregnant women to private nursing homes in Anantnag goes ‘unchecked’

Anantnag, April 24: On Friday, an alleged unchecked diversion of poor pregnant women from government facilities to private nursing homes in Anantnag, south Kashmir.
As per sources several women referred from Government Sub-District Hospitals and Primary Health Centres to Maternity and Child Care Hospital (MCCH), Anantnag, were instead routed to private nursing homes. The practice, they claim, has been ongoing and largely unchecked.
Sources alleged that doctors and paramedics create panic among expecting mothers by highlighting inadequate facilities at MCCH Anantnag, prompting them to seek treatment at private nursing homes.
In a recent development, sources said that two pregnant women were referred to MCH Anantnag from SDH Kokernag but both were routed to a private nursing home.
In another development, officials found crucial data linked to Pregnant women missing in a government hospital.
The situation is compounded by the fact that the maternity hospital continues to function from a building declared unsafe in year 2014.
Last year, Omar Abdullah government had promised and proposed construction of a new hospital building, with a Detailed Project Report (DPR) worth ₹86.5 crore submitted for approval under the NABARD Rural Infrastructure Development Fund. However, the Finance Department returned the proposal, seeking clarity on alternative funding sources and inclusion of furnishing costs.
This year the government informed house that Rs 5 crore has been allocated under the 2025–26 CAPEX Budget, and the project is expected to be proposed under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme in 2026–27.
Assembly was informed that the land has been identified within the premises of Mirza Afzal Beg Memorial (MAMB) Hospital, Government Medical College Anantnag, for relocation of the facility. While the paediatric unit has been shifted to MAMB, gynaecology and obstetrics services continue to operate from the Sherbagh building.
The hospital has long faced criticism over space constraints and safety risks. Earlier attempts to relocate services to Rehmat-e-Alam Hospital at KP Road were abandoned after experts declared the structure unsuitable for hospital use.
Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Anantnag, Dr Khalid, when contacted, told that all sub-district hospitals carry out patient treatment, but in some cases, high-risk patients are referred to MCH Anantnag for specialised care.
On the alleged diversion of patients from government hospitals to private facilities, the CMO admitted that he has received such verbal complaints and that patient movements are being monitored. However, he added that if a patient chooses to go to a private hospital on their own, “we can’t do anything.”
He, however, said that efforts are underway to devise a foolproof system to ensure that patients referred from hospitals actually reach MCH Anantnag.
The CMO further stated that strict legal action will be taken against touts involved in diverting patients from government hospitals to private nursing homes, if such instances come to notice and are backed by evidence.
He also said that he conducts surprise checks at hospitals and confirmed that a probe has been ordered into the missing data at SDH Achabal.
“The matter is being enquired into, and we have seized some tickets,” he added. (KDC)

Celebrations across Kashmir after US-Iran ceasefire announcement

Srinagar, Apr 8: Celebrations erupted in various places across Kashmir after the US-Iran ceasefire announcement, with people calling it a "victory" for the Islamic Republic.
Hundreds of people, especially in the Shia-dominated areas of the valley, gathered on roads to celebrate the ceasefire.
The celebrations erupted in Saidakadal and Zadibal areas of the city here, as well as in Budgam, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Pulwama and Bandipora districts of the valley.
Waving Iranian flags, the people expressed joy over the ceasefire announcement and burst crackers to celebrate. They also distributed Kashmiri kehwa as part of the celebrations.
The people called the ceasefire a "victory" of Iran over the US and Israel.
"This ceasefire is a victory for Iran. They brought the US and Israel to their knees. Today, we are celebrating this victory," a member of the Shia community in Budgam said.
