The hadith condemns earnings from prohibited or degrading sources. The payment for prostitution is clearly haram, as is the prohibited sale of dogs. Regarding the earnings of a cupper (ḥijāmah practitioner), scholars explained that “خَبِيث” here does not necessarily mean haram; other authentic hadiths show that the Prophet ﷺ himself paid a cupper. Thus, many scholars understood it as disliked or lowly earnings, rather than strictly forbidden.
