The Italian port of Ravenna has blocked two containers bound for Israel, after dock workers and government officials alerted the port authorities, local officials say. Meanwhile, several ports in Italy are today on strike in solidarity with Palestine.

City mayor Alessandro Barattoni said the port, one of the largest in the country, had accepted his and the local government’s request to block two trucks carrying explosives en route to the Israeli port city of Haifa. Barattoni also demanded that the Italian government prevent Israel from shipping its weapons via Italy.

In October last year, Italy’s hard-right government imposed a full arms embargo on Israel. However, the country still serves as a conduit for weapons bound for Israel.

Earlier this month, a representative of a dockworkers’ union in Genoa pledged that the union would “shut down all of Europe” if the Gaza aid flotilla, currently on its way to Gaza after multiple suspected drone attacks, lost contact with the mainland.

On Friday 19 and Monday 22 September, several Italian trade unions will strike in solidarity with Palestinians and the Gaza-bound flotilla. Monday’s work stoppage will affect ports in Genoa and Livorno. "We will not let one pin pass through the port," Riccardo Rudino of the Genoese Calp dockers union told the media.

Friday’s strike and accompanying protests, coordinated by the Italian trade union federation CGIL (Confederazione Generale Italiana del Lavoro), said that its action aimed to put pressure on prime minister Giorgia Meloni “to cancel all commercial and military agreements with Israel, lift the humanitarian embargo and recognise the state of Palestine”. The UK is reportedly preparing to recognise Palestine imminently.

Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday evening (August 19) wrote to the secretary-general of Lok Sabha Utpal Kumar Singh, notifying him that he intends to move the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025, along with The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and The Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, in the ongoing monsoon session of the Parliament on Wednesday, August 20, The Wire has learnt.

The J&K Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, unlike all speculations of the possibility of restoration of statehood for the union territory, introduces a new clause that if a minister in J&K is arrested or detained for 30 consecutive days for any offence punishable for five years or more, they can now be removed by the lieutenant-general or on the advice of the chief minister.

Pakistan army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir told a delegation of Saudi Arabian diplomats that “India is like a shining Mercedes, but we are like a dumper truck, filled with rocks and rubble”. “Imagine, now, if the truck crashes into the car, what the state of the Mercedes will be,” he said. The remark was made amid the military hostilities between India and Pakistan in May at a meeting attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, the country’s Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said over the weekend.

Munir’s unusual choice of metaphor had raised eyebrows, when it was first revealed by ThePrint, after he used it in an address to the Pakistani diaspora in Tampa in the United States earlier this month. It is unclear what the Saudi diplomats, who were engaged in shuttle diplomacy intended to defuse the crisis, made of the comments.

“God has made me the protector of the country, and I do not desire any other position. I am a soldier and my greatest desire is martyrdom,” Field Marshal Munir told his audience in Brussels this weekend, journalist Suhail Warrach reported.

On February 5, 1994, Bosnian Serb forces laying siege to the city of Sarajevo fired shells that struck a crowded marketplace, killing 68 civilians and injuring around 200. The world was shocked by the scenes of the dead and the wounded who had lost limbs. The United States used the outrage over the massacre to persuade NATO to launch airstrikes against the Bosnian Serb forces and their Serbian supporters.

Since the American and Israeli Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) established its food distribution centres in the Gaza Strip about two months ago, more than 1,300 hungry Gazans have been shot to death while on their way to receive food packages at the centres or near aid trucks, according to UN data. Unlike the war in Bosnia, the world is not exerting real pressure on Israel to stop the killings – instead, it is mostly waiting for President Trump to speak out.

The IDF claims that the reported death toll is exaggerated and that the shootings constitute justified “warning fire,” which has also included shelling (as in the deadly strike on the “Holy Family” Church in Gaza City, which the IDF claimed was caused by a stray shell). However, in light of the scale of the casualties and the near-daily killings, global accusations are mounting that Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir is a war criminal, and that the food distribution centers were deliberately designed as “death traps” meant to lure hungry people and then kill them.

Israel may attempt to dismiss these accusations as conspiratorial or antisemitic, yet it is simultaneously struggling to reassure even its most loyal allies around the world – many of whom are tearing their hair out, unable to comprehend the rationale behind the daily killings. For them, even if Zamir did not set out to create “death traps,” he is, in effect, doing nothing to prevent them
