Chidambaram Terms Article 370 Abrogation 'Constitutional Outrage', Questions Delay in Restoring Statehood

New Delhi, August 5: Senior Congress leader and former Union Finance and Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Wednesday renewed his party's criticism of the 2019 reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir, describing the abrogation of Article 370 and the division of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories as a "constitutional outrage."

Marking the anniversary of the August 5, 2019 constitutional changes, Chidambaram questioned the delay in restoring full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, saying the issue remained unresolved despite the Centre's assurance before the Supreme Court that statehood would be restored.

In a statement posted on social media, the Congress veteran argued that a key constitutional question relating to the conversion of a state into Union Territories had not been conclusively addressed and said the government's commitment on restoring statehood must now be honoured.

Chidambaram's remarks came amid nationwide political debate over Jammu and Kashmir's constitutional status, with several opposition parties reiterating their demand for the restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory. [KNT]

Congress Backs INDIA Bloc's Call to Restore Land, Job Rights and Statehood to J&K

New Delhi, August 5: Congress MP Pawan Khera on Wednesday described the events of August 5, 2019 as a "dark act", alleging that the people of Jammu and Kashmir were deprived of their dignity, constitutional rights and statehood following the Centre's decision to abrogate Article 370 and reorganise the erstwhile state.

Addressing reporters after the INDIA bloc's joint protest in Parliament, Khera said the united opposition had marched together to press for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that the issue went beyond party politics and concerned the rights of the people.

He said the opposition was also demanding the restoration of constitutional protections relating to land, employment and access to opportunities and resources, maintaining that these rights should be returned to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Khera said the Congress and other opposition parties would continue raising the issue until the Centre fulfilled its commitment on restoring statehood and constitutional rights. [KNT]

Security Agencies Conduct Joint Mock Drill Along Amarnath Yatra Route in Sonamarg

Ganderbal, August 5: Security and emergency response agencies on Wednesday carried out a joint mock drill at Nilgrath in Sonamarg to assess operational preparedness and coordination along the Shri Amarnath Yatra route.

The exercise, led by Ganderbal Police in coordination with other security and emergency agencies, simulated emergency response scenarios to evaluate the readiness of personnel in dealing with potential security incidents and disaster situations during the annual pilgrimage.

Officials said the drill focused on improving inter-agency coordination, response time and operational efficiency, besides testing contingency plans formulated for the safe conduct of the ongoing yatra.

The exercise forms part of a series of preparedness measures being undertaken to strengthen security and disaster management arrangements along the pilgrimage route. [KNT]

Tarigami Calls August 5 'Assault on Federalism', Says J&K Still Waiting for Promised Statehood

Srinagar, August 5: CPI(M) leader and MLA Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Centre over the constitutional changes of August 5, 2019, describing them as an assault on federalism and the democratic relationship between the Union of India and Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing a press conference, Tarigami alleged that the reorganisation of the erstwhile state and the abrogation of Article 370 were carried out without consulting the people of Jammu and Kashmir, fundamentally altering the constitutional arrangement that had existed since the accession of the erstwhile state to the Union of India.

He said that despite repeated assurances from the Centre, Jammu and Kashmir continues to await the restoration of full statehood, adding that governance and key policy decisions concerning the Union Territory remain concentrated in New Delhi rather than with elected institutions in Jammu and Kashmir.

The CPI(M) leader further alleged that political dissent and democratic expression continue to face restrictions, claiming that the space for political activity and an independent press has steadily narrowed since the 2019 constitutional changes.

Rejecting the Centre's claims that the decisions of August 5 had brought peace and progress, Tarigami maintained that the people of Jammu and Kashmir had yet to see the fulfilment of promises made regarding democratic empowerment and restoration of statehood.

Calling August 5 a "Black Day", he urged democratic and secular forces across the country to support what he described as the constitutional and democratic rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. [KNT]

Omar Rules Out Deliberate Disrespect in Tricolour Display Row Involving Mehbooba

Srinagar, August 5: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday dismissed suggestions that PDP president and former Chief Minister Mehbooba M***i had deliberately displayed the national flag incorrectly, saying the incident appeared to be an inadvertent mistake rather than an intentional act.

Responding to questions from reporters over the controversy surrounding the display of the Tricolour alongside the Jammu and Kashmir flag, Omar said he did not believe a person who had served as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir would knowingly commit such an act.

The Chief Minister said the error was most likely accidental and should not be viewed as a deliberate attempt to disrespect the national flag.

His remarks came amid a political row after objections were raised over the manner in which the Tricolour was displayed by Mehbooba M***i during a protest. [KNT]

Pahalgam Hotel Manager Convicted for Failing to Report Stay of Foreign Guests

Anantnag, August 5: A court in Anantnag has convicted the manager of a hotel in Pahalgam for failing to comply with mandatory reporting requirements relating to the stay of foreign nationals.

The Additional Mobile Magistrate convicted Mohan Lal, manager of Hotel Misty Mountain at Movera, in connection with a case registered at Police Station Pahalgam under the Immigration & Foreigners Act, 2025.

According to the prosecution, the case stemmed from the failure to upload the mandatory Form C in respect of two Thai nationals who stayed at the hotel on December 1 and 2 last year, as required under the law governing the reporting of foreign visitors.

The court sentenced the hotel manager to one day's imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹50,000.

Form C is a statutory document that hotels, guest houses and other accommodation providers are required to submit online to inform the authorities about the stay of foreign nationals at their establishments. [KNT]

The project, executed by PHE Division Handwara/Baramulla under Executive Engineer Aijaz Ahmad, involves installation of a 9-km long, 200 mm DI pipeline to carry raw water from the source to the filtration plant and service reservoir.

Once commissioned, the scheme will augment drinking water supply to nearly 25,000 residents across 13 villages of the Rajwar area.
